Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Happy Fathers Day to all the Daddy Ducks!

We also went to Toy Story yesterday and I must say it was a great movie. It's the first time my 2 yo has sat still that long. I highly recommend this movie to all.

Joe: I usually eat a bowl of oatmeal or a nutrigrain bar. As for the stretching I usually do some general leg stretches, but I do not spend a lot of time on it.

Hello Duckies, We went to the Oklahoma City Memorial this past weekend. Very sobering experience. They did an excellent job on both the outside memorial and the museum. If you every get a chance to go, take tissues as it is a very moving experience.

I've been a bit of a slacker in my runs the past couple of weeks, so I really need to give myself a quick kick and start getting more miles in. The Food and Wine Half is quickly coming up and I know I'm not ready. I am getting in plenty of cross training (zumba, kickboxing) but need to get back into my walking.

Go Duckies!

With it almost being July, I realized that it is only a bit over three months until the W&D. That is not too far away! Can't wait!

Check out the counter below, Augie is right, W&D will be here in no time.:cool1:

Hope everyone is doing good. I was having a little shin pain at the beginning of my run on Monday, so I am taking a break and icing a little. Debbie & I are heading up north tomorrow to visit my parents. My Saturday run will be in a new location, looking forward to different scenery.

Still looking for some pre & post run stretching tips.

Have a good weekend everyone.
Joe

One thing our coach has us do is stand balanced on one foot and using the other foot, "draw" the alphabet using that foot like a pencil.Make sure to point your toe. Then switch to the other leg! :)

I think that it's suppose to prevent shin splints. We do this after a run typically.

I plan on doing 6:1 minutes run/walk ratios during my half marathon in September.

On the Fourth of July, there is a four mile run here in a local town. Should I just run the four miles w/o stopping or incorporate my 6:1 ratios for more consistency? :confused3

I've been training lately with just the 6:1

Hey Ducks! :)

We've been in WDW for the past week and a half, got home last night. Had a great trip! Those of you on Facebook saw pics and updates...as always, if anyone wants to be friends on there, send me a PM!

My new Asics running shoes came in the day before we left, and I didn't have time to go get them (was a busy bee packing and all). No running in WDW, but I got plenty of exercise. I am pooped! I'll get my shoes probably tomorrow...today I am allowing myself to be LAZY!

Less than 14 weeks until W&D. I definitely need to get busy training.

Hello Ducks! Just wanted to mention that Mrs. D posted on another thread about making a res for Boma on the Friday before the W&D. If anyone is interested, stop by the thread.

Have a good weekend!

Oooh, I wish I could go! Boma is my favorite WDW restaurant. We ate there twice last week!! :cloud9: I won't land until 8pm that night though.

I think I would do the 6:1. Good luck!

Hi Ducks - I am so sorry I have been absent from the board lately. I have been badly slacking but slowly getting my butt back in gear. I joined a gym and am trying to work on my cardio, strength and core and generally getting back in shape. I have really slacked since Goofy and even then I wasn't in my best shape.

Liz - I have been jealous following your family at WDW the past 2 weeks at WDW - looks like you guys had a great time!!

Tonight I am planning on getting to the gym for a pilates class - my arms are sore from Saturday's strength and core class (I swear she tried to kill us)

Hi Ducks!
I'm a newbie on this forum and an adder to this team. I'm excited to join you guys.

I'm a 32 year old mother of 2 young boys (2 and 5 years old) and work for my local school system as a special education compliance monitor.

I've done 12 or so 5k's in the past year and have finally got the guts to sign up for my first 1/2 marathon in November.

Hello Ducks
Hope everyone had a good weekend. I managed 11 miles Saturday morning while visiting my parents. I felt good during my run, but the bottom of my feet were tender for the day. At least I was able to soak them in the lake while floating around in the water.
I did an easy 5 mile run tonight after work, it was 85 degrees, but a good breeze helped cool things off.
I think I need to get a running partner to help me speed up my pace. I run by myself and I find myself really slowing down at times. When someone passes me on the trail i try to keep up to their pace, but it is a big park and not a lot of runners, mostly walkers & bikers.

Liz: I enjoyed following your trip to WDW, looks like you had fun. I am trying to convince Debbie to go down for a 3 day weekend this summer to see the Summer Nightastic fireworks and Electric Parade, is it worth doing?

Have a good week everyone.
Joe

:welcome: Glad to have you on the team! :goodvibes

Question for everyone: I did my longest run on Saturday - 4 miles. This wasn't constant running, but I definitely ran more than I have before in one session. Yesterday I felt fine, but today I'm having quite a lot of achiness in my legs. My right calf is particularly tight and my right ankle/foot is sore. I don't normally get sore after a run, but is it normal for soreness to show up two days later?

Welcome to the TEAM! :yay:

Carissa: DOMS - Delayed onset muscle soreness CAN show up later than expected sometimes, but usually it's not so centralized. Did you stretch after your run? How are your shoes? Need to replace? How about your hydration & potassium levels?

 Hope you feel better!

CONGRATS on doing four miles though! THAT'S AWESOME!

I always stretch afterwards and my shoes don't have very many miles on them. I think my problem is I increased my distance too much. I've always read about only increasing by no more than 10% in a week and I definitely went over that. I just figured it wasn't a big deal because even 4 miles isn't very far.

My leg and foot is still bothering me today. It's nothing real bad, just annoying. I decided to give it another rest and see how it feels tomorrow before I try running.

Thanks for the reply! :goodvibes

Happy July 4th to the Ducks! We celebrated "Canada Day" here on July 1, but I just don't get it...so I pretend it's the 4th and all is good!

Joe - You asked a few questions. My answers: About 1/2 hour before heading out the door, I eat 1/2 cup of cottage cheese before a morning run with a big glass of water. High protein, low fat, easy to digest. Then when I get home, I eat a more substantial breakfast (FF plain yogurt mixed with fresh fruit, honey, bran buds, and ground flax seed). Waaay healthy.

I don't stretch much before I run, but I do stretch as I cool down after I run. That way, all the muscles are warmed up and I won't hurt anything by stretching. Calves, hams, quads, my back. A couple of times all around. That's all I do. Probably not fully sufficient, but more than I did in my 30's! :rolleyes1

Carissa - You're still my hero! Woo hoo!

Welcome to our newest Ducks! Chime in and keep us posted on your running, training, upcoming races, questions, successes, failings, etc. You'll find it's a great group!

I finally got my new running shoes yesterday. I ended up having to order them from Zappos as the running store had no record of ordering them for me?!?! They even left a message on my answering machine the day before we left for WDW telling me there were in and ready to be picked up. So I drove over there and yeah, no shoes, and the guy was clueless (and it was the same guy who placed the order for me...DUH). I told him forget the whole thing, I'll just order them from Zappos and have them in a day, and I want a refund. They don't normally give refunds, their policy is store credit, but he didn't question a refund, he could tell I was not a happy customer... I won't be going back there unless I have no choice.

Sooo, ordered my Asics 2150's from Zappos and got them in 1 day. :thumbsup2 Ran on them today and they are fine, they don't hurt my foot like the Brooks and Adidas ones did. I guess my feet like Asics!

So today I ran 1.5 miles in 18:23. And I biked 4.1 miles in 20:00. I'm easing back into it (yet again) with hopes of no injuries! I've got 13 weeks to get ready for W&D. :wizard:

Looks like you live 3 hours east of me. So hi neighbor! :) I'm 34 and have 4 boys. Wow, you've done lots of 5k's. I'm sure you are ready to go for a half now. Which one are you doing?

... Liz: I enjoyed following your trip to WDW, looks like you had fun. I am trying to convince Debbie to go down for a 3 day weekend this summer to see the Summer Nightastic fireworks and Electric Parade, is it worth doing? ...

The MSEP holds a special place in my heart, it reminds me of my early trips to WDW in the 80's. So seeing it again and showing it to my boys was a must do for me. :) The fireworks are wonderful. It is mostly the same show as the Pirate & Princess Party-with some small changes. Did you ever see that show? We saw it twice so I knew that the Summer Nighttastic ones were going to be great, and they are. I think it's the pirates segment that is just SO cool, and unique, it's awesome. I would tell you to go for sure! Any luck convincing Debbie yet??
