Donald's Defiant Dashers (AKA Triple D's/Duckies/The Ducks) Dashing into 2010

Keep in mind, I had a "cardiac event" two months ago, THEN I signed up to run the W&D Half! But I'm a Mighty Duck! Maybe a bit crazy...not foolish...but crazy.

I ran outside both Saturday and Sunday this weekend for the first time since my "cardiac event" (all other running has been on the treadmill with a heart monitor). My plan was to run as slow as possible, like on the treadmill. But you know what? I couldn't run on the street as slow as I do on the treadmill. My Garmin reports I ran about a minute faster per mile than the treadmill. I felt fine both days running. Just couldn't move that slow. 4 miles both days. My plan is to keep a base of 15 to 20-ish mile per week until early August. Then I'll start working in longer weekly runs.

How is everyone else doing on their training plans?

Liz - Have you found any shoes yet? I'm an Asics girl, too. I'm not too fond of where they've taken the GT Gel series shoe over the years, but it still works for me. Any luck yet?

You are awesome to have your hopes and plans after what you've been through Renee!! :cool1:

I'm the same way as far as simply not being able to run as slow outside. It feels like I'm going in slow motion. It feels like I physically can't run any slower without switching to walking. I can run at 4.5 mph on the tm, but outside it's really hard to go slower than about 5mph. I have to constantly look at my Garmin and keep slowing myself down. I don't get it.

Shoes.. I took back the Adidas' last week and decided to get the Asics 2150's. However they didn't have them in my size so they ordered them and they should be in this Wednesday.

Yep, I am a certified bonehead! :rotfl:
I think Renee is a close second. J/K!

Liz, I agree with the slowing down outside. I noticed yesterday I was doing nine minute miles & that pace is TOO FAST for me to be able to complete 13 miles. Are you packed yet?

Happy Monday Everyone!

I really can't wait to meet you guys!! Seeing each and every crazy face for real will so much fun!! Even if it is as you run right by me!! LOL!!

I feel much better today and if the closing of my new house goes well, I may be up for a run later this evening.

I have a couple of big hills in my neighborhood that I think I did some over striding on the last couple times I ran. I knew I was doing it too but was trying to keep up with my DD on her bike! next time she has to wait for me!!

WISHES for a Happy Monday!:grouphug:

It makes sense to me, though. I was talking to my friend Angela. She started C25K and she runs outside. She figures she runs about 5.0 (she runs on a track so it's easier to figure out how fast she's running) and she says there's no way she can run any slower (I've tried telling her to go slower because she's struggling in week 4). Then I told her that 5.0 is still quite fast and how I did the entire program at 4.0 on the treadmill. I think there's something about running outside and you're actually moving forward and not running in place. I sometimes think how much I struggle to run now on the treadmill, but I imagine when I'm running a race, I'll have that motivation to keep moving forward because it brings me closer to the finish line. Running on the treadmill gets me nowhere! :rotfl:

It's so exciting to hear about all of you running the Wine and Dine! While I think it's crazy to run at night for someone like me who is so exhausted by 9 p.m., I think it might be kind of cool. The one thing that I'm stressed about with the half marathon in January is having to get up so early and standing around in the cold for a couple of hours.

I just ran a 5K on the treadmill. I did it in 43:20, which is much slower than I want to be, but it's at least 5 minutes faster than when I did the Valentine's Day virtual 5K. As long as I get faster each time, I'm happy. :)

Hope everyone has a great week!

Hello Ducks! Good to hear that everyone is out and running. I do not know if outside is faster than a treadmill, but running with others is definately faster. I do not use anything, nor carry a watch so I do not know my pace while running. I just start a stopwatch and leave it where I start and look at it when I finish. Very scientific, right? But running by myself is 3 to5 minutes slower than being in a race for a 5K distance.

So, I did a 5K this Saturday, and did a PB, I think, 22:15, as well as came in second in my age group. I told the guy handing out the prizes (which was a beer mug) that it must have been the shoes, as he is the one who sold them to me.

Hope everyone has a great week!

Just started Bingham's Running Half Marathon plan today in preparation for my Philly Rock n' Roll Half on September 19th. I can't believe that official training starts today. My Garmin says I went a bit faster than I really did . . .

Anyway, I was supposed to do 30 minutes today, and I succeeded despite the heat. I did about 2.8 miles (according to my odometer). The Garmin said 3.0. I guess it was actually about a 10 min 42 second pace. (I like what the Garmin said MUCH better!) It had me at a 10 minute mile! My dream is to be slightly under that for an entire half marathon . . . dare to dream!

Good morning, all. Yesterday was Day 2 of Bingham training for the Philly Half. 25 minutes of running. Today is a day of rest. Yeah.....LOL! So far, not very grueling which I am grateful for in the heat. Interesting to think of long runs in July and August.

Have a great day!

Laura: We should plan to meet up at the half.
What did you put for your estimated finishing time?
I put 3 hours since it'll be my first half.

Did five miles yesterday & did the 6:1 run/walk ratios.
A nice run, but a little slow. Averaged about 11 mpm.

Liz: Are you packed yet? :dance3:

Which Half are you referring to? Are you doing the Philly one or Wine and Dine? I haven't registered for Wine and Dine yet . . . but I'd be happy to meet up with any Ducks! Especially for the Wine and Dine - I may be going solo for a short trip but would love to do a park or dinner with a fellow Duck!

The Philly one! :yay:

Wanted to quickly say -- HAVE FUN LIZ!!!!

I go down next week....can't wait. Not excited about HP lines at Universal, but it will be neat to see. We're doing both.

I've been laying low for a little bit and am resting a little more until after vacation. Hoping some extra rest will heal up this tailbone once and for all

Will catch up more after vaca.

Augie that is an awesome job on your PB. I wish I could run at that fast of a clip.

Lady Dooley: I had shin splints when I first started running about two years ago. I ended up having to change shoes. I went to a specialty running store to properly fitted. It was amazing the difference my new shoes made.

I ran my 10k this past weekend in 1 hr 26 min, not my best race but I finished it. It was my first trail race and I was not as prepared to run that type of race. The first 5k was strong I ran it in 32'49" so not terrible. However the second 5k is where it killed me. There was twelve climbs in this section. So I went from running just under a 11 min mile to over a 17 min mile. The trail was beautiful and with about 100 yds left in the race we had to run through the edge of the lake (About a 50' section). I already want to run this race again but I will be ready for it next time.

Hope everyones training and races keep going well.

A big HELLO to all my Duck friends. We just got back from watching Toy Story 3, it is a great movie! I think it is the best of the 3, bring some Kleenex with you.

I ran 9 miles last Saturday and by my training schedule, I have a 10 miler tomorrow. My shins are a little sore, but it hasn't bothered me while running this week. I am going to the running store tomorrow to look for a new pair of shoes. Any suggestions for a stability shoe?

Have a good weekend everyone!
Joe

Hey Ducks!

So Liz is in Orlando now? And Deb is going next week? (...do not covet, do not covet, do not, covet...) Have a GRAEAT time, ladies!

Joe - You must be getting ready for a half coming up (since you're doing a 10 miler)? I'm planning on going to Toy Story 3 tonight, but hoping to avoid some of the kid crowds. We'll see. Thanks for the hankie hint.

I'm running 4.4 miles, 4 times a week now. I decided to up my miles just a bit. I wanted to legally be running 1/3 of that half marathon coming up in October. Work is getting pretty hectic and I'm walking myself nuts around the industrial plant we're building up here, so I'm getting lots of walking miles in, too, most days.

The weather is awesome up here this weekend. Low 80's both days. Woo hoo!

Happy Father's Day to all the Daddy Ducks out there! Don't forget to call yours tomorrow.

Happy Fathers Day to all our Daddy Ducks!

Still packing and trying to move forward. I hope to get out and run 4 miles tonight

Happy Father's Day to the Papa Ducks (I didn't want to say the same thing haha)!

I just got back from Vacation with my family where, very sadly, I didn't run once. ugh. We were walking at roughly 4-8 miles each day! :)

Nothing planned until the Air Force Half Marathon in September. My training schedule has me increase my long runs by 1 mile each week until I get to 12 then it tapers off a little before going back up. I did manage a 10 mile run this morning in 2 hours and 12 seconds ( I couldn't knock off that 12 seconds;)).
I went to the running Fit store today and picked a pair of Saucony Guide 3 shoe. They are really comfortable and I look forward to trying them out.:thumbsup2

Just curious, what does everyone eat before their morning runs? I have been eating a bagel and drinking a large glass of water and I'm looking for ideas for something else.
While I'm asking questions, what is everyones stretching routine before & after a run. I have been terrible about stretching, always have. I need to get a routine.
Have a good weekend everyone, Happy Fathers Day to the Dads in the group.
Joe

Hello Ducks! Happy Fathers Day to the dads! Sounds like we are all getting out and saying active. That sounds like a cool race you did, AU DD! I plan on doing an off road race in August.

Joe, I do not stretch too much, just some toe touches, at lest for just training runs At a race I am constantly stretching while waiting in the corrals. As for eating, I almost always have oatmeal for breakfast before I ride to work. Sometimes I will make an omelet if there is a longer period before I am going to do something. And at Disney, I run first and then stop at the BW bakery for a muffin. (anyone else notice that they got smaller?)

It is a beautiful day here in Boston, yesterday I did the Harpoon Brewery to Brewer ride, 150 miles from the brewery in Boston to the Brewery in VT. Very cool ride, this the second time I have done it

Enjoy the rest of the weekend!

Augie
