Don Imus is FIRED!

I still believe in the old saying: Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity. The problem for Imus is, given his history, he can't explain it away. It's a longstanding pattern.

But do you know what the irony here is? He was one of the few successful LIBERAL radio talk show hosts. Where are all of his liberal friends now? They 'didn't know' what he was really like. :rotfl:

Why must you always fall back on liberal vs. conservative?

There are plenty of successful liberals in talk radio, they just have better things to do than talk politics all the time.

Actually, the "S" word was being used to denounce the Hispanic RACE that Puerto Ricans are a part of, so actually, it is a racial slur.

People don't call people the "S" word because they're from a particular Latin American or what have you country, they call them that because they are Hispanic, sorry, but I think you're way off on that one.
"Hispanic" is not a race. "Hispanic" people are caucasian. So, whatever the "S" word is, I'm guessing it is an ethnic slur and not a racial one. Italians are caucasian, too.

ETA: Called DH and found out what the S-word was. Have heard it before, not a total ignoramus.

Cardaway, his program was a very politically oriented talk show with politically oriented guests and he has taken the liberal point of view most of the time. He has spent a great deal of that time trashing the administration. Its not a matter of falling back on liberal vs conservative, its a description of his program and his politics. I find it interesting that he has had few of his long time friends and guests standing by him.

Why would it be locked? People are sharing real emotions.

My real emotion is hatred - you are correct. I hate it when white people think they know a thing about racism. I really hate that.
Why is that? Because white people can't be disappointed when they are discriminated against? Or is it because they can't suffer the confused irritation and hurt when someone says something mean or insensitive to them or about them? I don't know if you've ever had it happen to you, if you're white. Maybe you're white and figure since it never happened to you, it must not happen. But it does.

And then you've got your mixed folks, who get it from every side. Yet another reason to condemn it across the board, IMO.

I did not and do not excuse Mr. Imus' remarks. They were vile, IMO. And I wouldn't give him a break because it was his first time, either (if it had been.) I don't think there is a set number of remarks one has to make to say, "OK, NOW he's a racist." One is enough.

But to pretend that other people don't say things just as vile and not only get away with it, but are celebrated for it is just silly. We ought to condemn it all the time.

And I just want to add that if I were one of those girls, I wouldn't show up to accept or not accept his apology. He isn't worth showing up for. And I doubt that I'd consider any apology sincere - especially a public one - because I don't think he's sorry he said it. He's just sorry that he's suffering the fallout.

I wasn't disagreeing with Imus being liberal and political.

This isn't a political issue IMO nor is it true that there are not other sucessful liberals on talk radio.

But beyond that, I always think of my Janet, an african american, and what she always says. She says she gets so tired of having to represent everything that every black person does wrong. That people turn to her, like she has something to do with it.

In this case, we are talking about what a white person did wrong. My feeling is, no matter what he may do that is good, if he can't speak without offending entire groups of people, I'm glad for all those who don't want to listen to him.

How about if just this once, instead of rushing to remind everyone that "they are just as bad". We say something like, "Man that sucks! This guys a jerk! I'm never listening to a word he says again." How about looking at ourselves first, like Jesus said - take the log out of our eye first.

Then if you white people want to go out and right all the wrongs of the black community, go for it.

Why can't a white person know anything about racism? Are you telling me that if a white child went to a school that was predominately black they would not be the victim of racism? They would not be called names like "whitey" or "cracker"? Are those remarks not racist in your opinion?

Can you accept that some people are racist regardless of skin color?

Please look above at the text I bolded. You say "your Janet" gets tired of representing everything a black person does wrong. Well don't you think that white people born in the past three decaded (say 1970 on) get tired of representing what white people before that time period did wrong (slavery, segregation, race crime)?

As many other posters have stated it doesn't appear that ANYONE is defending Don Imus's comments. I am totally in agreement that his comment regarding the basketball team were out of line. I can't comment on anything else he has said as I don't listen to his radio show (nor do I listen to Stern either). What is being said is that this issue has brought to light other issues regarding racism in the country. it just happens that the two persons everyone seems to be talking about are Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson. The general consensus seems to be: "Why is is okay for Al Sharpton & Jesse Jackson to call for Don Imus to be fired for his racial remarks when they make racial slurs against non-blacks?"

Honestly why can't we be the HUMAN RACE?

A word of advice: Quit while you're ahead or, at least, even. Unfortunately for you, that was before this post.

Well said! :thumbsup2

If you want to see some racism on this very board you could check out the American Idol thread. Seems some people are not happy that J. Lo sang a song in spanish last night. :sad2: I know that my post is a little off topic, but sheesh racism is everywhere. I thought we would be past this by now.

?

My two oldest went to a YMCA Camp one year. There were a lot of inner city kids who were quite vocal about their racism. My boys had never heard the word "cracker" before and it made camp an unpleasant experience.

 Wow. You DO know that there are white folks that have been the victim of racist attacks, right?

Well hopefully this is the end of it. Or are we going to continue to hear people try to increase their own public visibility because of this for another week :/

It ain't over till the strange looking clown sings!

I couldn’t agree with you more. She always has to open her BIG mouth and comment on things just to get her name in the press! (I am a little surprised you of all people would refer to her as a "strange looking clown")

Let's not forget this classic "joke"..was she ever "fired " for it?

Clinton regrets Gandhi joke

New York senator said, ‘He ran a gas station down in St. Louis’

ST. LOUIS - Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton apologized for joking that Mahatma Gandhi used to run a gas station in St. Louis, saying it was “a lame attempt at humor."

The New York Democrat made the remark at a fund-raiser Saturday. During an event here for Senate candidate Nancy Farmer, Clinton introduced a quote from Gandhi by saying, “He ran a gas station down in St. Louis

PS - here is what she said about Imus:

Sen. Hillary Clinton (N.Y.), however, said Imus' cracks just confirmed her opinion.

"I've never wanted to go on his show and I certainly don't ever intend to go on his show, and I felt that way before his latest outrageous, hateful, hurtful comments," she said.

You might want to look into a little person called Tawana Brawley. Maybe you haven't heard of her, but she's a big part of Sharpton's life and why most people lost pretty much any respect they had for him before.

This is what is meant when people say he "fans the flames" with his anti-racism racism. It doesn't solve anything, he just wants to be something he never will be.

:thumbsup2 I couldn't agree with you more.

So, here it goes.

Al "show me the money" Sharpton- T. Brawley! and Jesse "it's in my genes to have an affair" Jackson have won! This is why the reparations claims and the "I don't get any respect due to the color of my skin" claims will now multiply. Funny, if you are a "minority" you can have your own scholarships, award shows, tv networks. But if you are white or cauc., you must adhere to the possible hurt inflicted by others generations ago!
I want to see Al and Jesse fired for the mistakes they have made in the past! Sorry, that would be racist:confused3 ?
