Hey. My absolute dream is to touch and get in the water with dolphins. Epcot's Dolphins in Depth program seems pretty amazing, but I want to make sure it's worth the money. Has anyone ever done this? If you have, did you feel like it was worth it?

I did this many, many years ago, so I'm not sure how much it has changed if any. The first part of the tour is spent in a backstage classroom where you learn about dolphins, conservation and the Disney program. You may also get a small tour as you head backstage. You then go on stage to the large viewing windows where you continue to learn more about the dolphins and the research done there. The last 45 minutes or so, you don a shorty wet suit and go to the top middle of the donut shaped aquarium. As a group, you step out onto a wide ledge in waist deep water that extends out into the aquarium. They then bring one or two dolphins to you where you have some one on one contact. You are able to pet them , maybe even splash back at them if they splash you but that's about it. They also take a photo of you with them and get a t-shirt as well. If you are expecting a lot of tricks, playing and swimming with them like some other resorts, then you will be disappointed. If you will not have a chance any other time to interact with a dolphin, then yes its worth it. Also, it is very cool to go to the top of the aquarium which so few guests get to see. One thing that they always tell you is that it is strictly up to the dolphins whether they want to interact on any given day so there is no guarantees. I'm not sure what happens if they dont want to participate, but I personally have never heard of it happening.

I don,t know what the cost is now, but back then, was it worth it? Yeah. I then took the Seas Aqua tour a year later, and that gave me the bug to become a certified diver. The year after that, I dove the Living seas, and that was pretty cool also. So try it, you'll never know where it will lead you.

Hope this helps!

Like Lancer, my youngest daughter & I did Dolphins in Depth, a few years back, then followed up a year later with the Aqua Seas Tour. While we never (unfortunately) got certified, we have gone snorkeling :fish: quite a few times since. Bottom line while I don't remember the cost (it wasn't cheap I do remember) it was worth every penny. My daughter & I have wonderful memories & we still talk about it, every time we hit the parks or the beach.

The cost is $200 per adult, according to what I just looked up. We went to Discovery Cove for only about $50 more than that, and the entire day including food and beverage was included. We got to be towed by a dolphin, and signaled dolphins to do tricks - it was amazing. Snorkeling in the ray pool; aviary; otter pool; so much more! Something you might want to consider if you are really looking for the dolphin interaction.

Did this in 2013 with my sister and enjoyed it. The time in the water with the dolphins is (relatively) limited, the majority of your time is spent backstage learning about dolphins. A portion of the cost goes to their conservation program (accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums -- AZA). As an educator, I really enjoyed the depth of the education component.

If you choose to do an interaction outside of Disney, do make sure you research beforehand, there are a lot of sketchy places out there.

I had been to Discovery Cove 4 times and did the dolphin swim there twice before doing Dolphins in Depth at Epcot. It was a birthday present for DBF last year, and we both loved it (he had done the dolphin swim at Discovery Cove as well).

There is a strong education and conservation component, which is terrific. I felt like the time spent with the dolphins was adequate.

(P.S. Like @Lancer, I have done DiveQuest at Epcot as well - in fact, my current profile pic is of DBF and I during that program. :) )

I am disappointed with Disney.

The dolphins seem to be kept in horrible conditions.
They dont seem to have access to fresh air or natural daylight.

I wish Disney would retire these dolphins to seapens.

I haven't seen the areas that the dolphins are kept in from any angle besides the regular viewing windows, and a google maps view of the Living Seas pavilion shows no outside tanks whatsoever. Having worked with captive dolphins while I was in college, I also think the indoor tanks are a horrible place for dolphins to be held captive.

Question about the pictures-how many pictures do they take of you? How much do they cost each? If we have Memory Maker/Photopass do they take more?

My husband and I did the tour on our honeymoon in 2009 so I'm not sure if it changed. Each of us got a printed and matted picture of us and the dolphin. We had the choice to do the pic alone or together so we got 1 of me by myself and my husband wanted his to be of both of us with the dolphin. They're actually 2 of our favorite pictures ever!! I don't think the photopass photographer was there but I'll have to look at my CD to be certain.

When we did the experience in November 2015, DBF and I got about 2-3 pictures taken total. We did not have a PhotoPass photographer - the trainer we were with took our pictures with the department's own point-and-shoot camera. :)

I wasn't even aware Disney World had dolphins so this is pretty disappointing. I found a petition...if enough people sign it, maybe Disney will do the right thing.

DBF and I did it, the experience was okay but really made me sad about the Dolphins there. Agree with previous posters about no fresh air or sunlight. It was very expensive and I found it was not worth the money. Wild Aftica Trek at AK was much better and less expensive.

We have also done discovery cove and it was very educational about the Dolphins and it was a better experience, we booked it in a "slow" season and it was cheaper than Dolphins in depth

I did it a few years ago with an AP discount and I felt it was worth the money. There is a good bit of sitting and listening to a cast member tell you all about dolphins and your time with the dolphins is a fairly short percentage of the entire tour. Also they warned us that they don't force the dolphins to come to you, so I guess there's a chance you could get in and not get to touch one. Would I recommend it? Probably if you really have a passion for dolphins and find marine biology and conservation interesting. Would I do it again? No, but not because I didn't like it, just because it was good, but I can't see repeating it.

My DD and her BF went in November while we were at Epcot. It was her birthday gift. They loved it. They thought the time in the water could have been a little longer, and the website mentions a snack, that they said they never got, which was no big deal. They were very happy with it. We wanted to do discovery cove, but it was $350 per person, and with my Disney visa, I only paid $160 per person for dolphins in depth. Plus it was inside, so no worry about weather.

They only took one for each of them, no additional. They print it and give it to you in a folder. They also got those drawstring backpacks. (As of November)

I was told on the phone that the pictures cost extra, on top of the $199! I was like what?! That's crazy! Glad to hear that they are free!
