we have never upgraded in 15+ visits yet but have never got the compact we have booked as they seem never to have them they always try to give you the hard sell just egnore it if the car is too small when you get it then upgrade

Last time we paid for an upgrade and got a 7 seater instead for the extra price of $99 dollars for a fortnight.

We once booked a Full Sixe and they gave us a Luxury. Sadly as it was white we felt we only needed the black glasses to complete the "pimp" look!

We booked a full size last time and ended up with a 8 seater van.We did swap this in the end for a luxury at no extra cost.

we were upgraded "free" from a compact to a convertible in Nov.

However nothing in this life is "free", watch out for those extra insurance charges. :moped:

Hi,
We were upgraded from a compact to a PT cruiser convertible on our last trip and they didn't even try to get me to pay the extra. Mind you it was about 11.30pm so she had probably had enough by then.. :teeth:

It does happen, but class it as a "nice bonus" not a "guaranteed extra".

Its very rare to be allocated the "sub compact". When it was just DH and myself, we always got at least an intermediate for no extra charge.

We have paid for upgrades before at the airport, but these days we prefer to book the exact car we want before we leave the UK. There are lots of companies that do it very cheaply now, so we dont find its worth leaving to chance.

Last trip we had an I4 car and the service light came on, on the 4th day.
I returned it to the local Dollar depot on the 192 and they didn't have anything to swap that had been valeted and asked me to return in the afternoon.
this I did and was given a free upgrade to a mini van with a full tank of fuel for my trouble.
this was the best car we have had and made the next 2and a half weeks even more fun :cool1:

Hello,

I did get an upgrade for free from a compact to a convertable but only through some carefull haggling.

As I was under 25 at the time I had to pay upon arrival extra insurance so when I was offered a 'special offer' upgrade to a convertable I stated I couldnt afford it due to my extra insurance cost as in addition to my under 25 extra cost the convertable was in a higher insurance bracket.

Basically I ended up with the convertable for free so long as I paid the insurance which I was more than happy to do as this was about 1/4 of the price of what he upgrade would have been.

I have pre-booked a convertable this time round as I like to budget inadvance and wanted to confirm my hire car with DF who would have found some last minute excuse as to why we couldnt upgrade!!!

Dollar are great for bartering with. They have it on record if you have hired with them previously and that always gets you a bonus upgrade. We usually pay for an intermediate and end up with a minivan for only a few $$s more. Buy the entertainment boook if you want to be sure of an upgrade.:goodvibes

We have found in the past that with most car firms at Orlando airport, but especially Dollar, the smaller the car you've ordered, the more likely you are to get a free upgrade.

Once where they tried to offer us a "special offer" to upgrade at about half the normal price, but we refused as we didn't want a larger car (my wife drives a compact sized one in the UK, so is used to it). Yet when we went to pick it up, it was the upgraded one anyway - I guess they realised they didn't have our car size in, so they thought they'd try to at least get some money out of us!

Heck, last year we had to go back to the desk and ask to be DOWN-graded! When we got to the parking lot, we found the car they'd given us was about the size of an M-1 Abrahams tank! Couldn't see the back of the car when reversing was a bit of a worry, so got them to give us something a tad smaller...

A couple of years ago ten of us visited WDW and we booked 2 x 7 seaters as most of us are at least 6 foot tall we thought that the extra leg room and luggage space would be fine and we did not all want to go everywhere together every day, so opted for 2 x 7 instead of a 15 seater. We arrived at the dollar desk and completed the paper work and were asked to wait a little as they had to get some vehicles over from there deopt. We had about a 10 min wait then went to the shed in the garage and collected the keys at no time were we asked if we wanted to upgrade or told that they did not have any 7 seaters. When we got to our vehicles we had 2 x 15 seater minivans both complete with full tanks of petrol. In someways they did us a favour as on the days we all went together to the parks it only cost us one carpark fee. But it was funny the day that my Father drove to Kennedy on his own in one, we told him he should have picked up paying guests!!!

We got a free upgrade at Dollar on 13.03.05 after booking a 2 door full size car with Airline Network. After being asked if we wanted to upgrade to something more comfortable (which we turned down), he did some tapping and just came out and said would it be acceptable if we had a 4WD jeep at no extra cost. Of course we said YES!!!
