I don't do my own (don't perm my hair, have before but it is hard!) but I do hair.
If you can get it rolled correctly and with the rod on the base in the place you want for the curl that you want and at the correct tension, be sure to apply the solution to every rod very evenly. Time it for the directed amount of time (or do a test curl and look for the S pattern). Then rinse according to directions. Rinse and rinse and rinse some more--5 full mins. unless your hair is longer then rinse a little longer. Don't worry about your water bill
After rinsing is complete follow the direction to the T. No exceptions. Do every step. And towel blot after rinse like you have never towel blotted before. Blot, blot blot. Every rod. And every rod again!! Then use paper towels to make sure you have blotted well. Did I say to blot? I meant every rod!!LOL
Then apply your neutralizer according to the direction. Every rod, evenly. Then, follow the directions for removal--some perms you remove then, some you rinse once more time (most you just remove but follow the directions!). Then rinse and do not shampoo unless it says to.
If you are wanting curl, try just allowing it to air dry after the perm w/o blowing it dry. This will help the curl in the long run--at least right away.
If you have a friend who will roll it up, good deal. Follow the directions and rinse and blot. have fun and enjoy the wonder smell that only a skunk and a perm can provide!
