*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

You aren't alone! I just found this thread too! This will be my second Donald and my third half marathon. I thought the weather last year was perfect, so I'm getting a little nervous about the cold temps that are forecasted as I'm not a good cold weather runner. In fact, I don't consider myself a runner at all...more of a "wogger." I walk awhile, then jog awhile, usually at a 3 min./2 min. pace. I use the training plan in the Marathoning for Mortals book, but had to modify it some as I was very sick from mid Sept to the third week of Oct. I did 7 miles yesterday on the indoor track at our gym. Felt a little sore yesterday afternoon, but I'm fine today.

I've been wondering about this meet! I went to the one last year and was wondering when it would be! Is anyone staying at the Contemporary or BLT? Maybe we could ride together. I will not have a car and will need to rely on Disney transportation. Look forward to seeing people there!

I just found this thread too-and I'm another "wogger". My training was going great, I was up to 5 minutes running to 1 walking.... and then I broke my third metatarsal in my left foot. Now I'm just praying that I can survive the thing without getting swept or re-braking the darn foot! GRRRRR......

Hey, guys. I'm wondering if anyone would be able to do me a big favor? I signed up for the half with the best intentions, but never got off my duff to prepare. Instead of just going and enjoying a trip to WDW, I decided to wait and go in March and do the Princess Half. Anyway, I would love to get the goody bag and pin that I paid for, so would anybody be willing to pick up my stuff and mail it to me? I will pay for shipping, of course. Please PM me if you are willing to do that. Thanks!

Hi everyone! Sorry I haven't posted in a week or so. Life got busy with the kids being home from school and of course Christmas craziness! Plus I got sick on Christmas Eve and haven't felt well. Running took a back seat but I am back into it as of today. I went out and did 8 slow and easy miles. A handful of runs left and then the big day. I'm so excited!!

Just wanted to say looks like a couple of you are from NC!

I am too! :wave2:

Hi there! I remember you were one of the ones I sent a PM to and invited to this thread. I'm glad you joined us, better late than never! :goodvibes And yep, I'm in NC. Nice to meet you, neighbor!

WELCOME to all other new Donald Doers too!! :)

:donald: ATTENTION ALL DONALD DOERS! :donald:

Remember that on Friday the 8th, in addition to the main WISH meet at POP at 4:30, we also have our own Donald Doers meet planned also at POP at 4:00 outside of the gift shop. I know some of you have said you'll be there and some said you'll try to make it. Jenny/dismagiclover and I will be there wearing our nametags from Tracy. We'll take a group picture with whoever shows up, even if it's only a handful of us. And then we can all head to the WISH meet! :)

The meets are 9 days away!

I was just going through the course here:
http://disneyworldsports.disney.go.com/dwws/en_US/info/detail2?name=MarathonMapDetailPage#

and I counted 9 water stops, 4 aid and 1 food. I'm wondering some things if anyone knows:

What will they have at the food stop? I read in another thread they had Clif stuff there last year. But I'm thinking I should carry my own in case they run out or something. What are you all doing?

Will they have water at the aid and food stops as well?

Where will the port a potties along the course be? Within the parks are we supposed to use the bathrooms there?

I think you are right, cliff bars - I bring the knox blox type of chew - it has the electrolytes, and its chewy - electrolytes are very important - it really makes a huge difference in your energy levels! I bring mine - but at the expo you can buy them, and taste them!

Water is everywhere!! :thumbsup2 and make sure you take it, whether you need it or not, just take a few sips - I take it slow, chew a blok sip some water then get going...

Port a potties - they are on the race course - I think after the first mile tho - i know there was a few over by the hill by the contemporary, in that parking lot - inside MK - use the flush!!

I know they had them at mile ten too ( THE major sweep points are outside of MK and then Mile 10 :scared1:)

I know I havent been consistent - been really depressed with the injury - went to a chiropractor, and I believe there is hope!! :cloud9:

the First Aid has this stuff called "Bio Freeze" I thought they were handing out vasoline (for chafing - bring or buy bodyglide!!) nope it was this stuff if you put it on an area I think it makes the muscles "freeze" ie its cold??? never have used it!

Cliff SHots - aka gels. If you don't train with Cliff Products don't try them on race day... Dance with what brung you this far.

PowerAde and Water at all water stops. Not necessarily the Food Stop but the water stop is just down the road.

The comment from above "and make sure you take it, whether you need it or not, just take a few sips -" is a little dangerous. Maybe not in the half as much as the full but it could be. DO NOT drink any more or any less water or Sport Drink than at the rate you trained at. The old thoughts were drink at every stop regardless of what your individual sweat rate may be. Bad advice as some folks can become hyponatremic. Literlaly drinking so much water than you dilute sodium levels to a point where the body shuts down. Sad thing is it presents itself in the med tent with the same symptoms as dehydration. The folks who are most suspecble to hyponatremia are first time females who may not be in the best of shape and a little heavier than ideal. I am not trying to scare you only pointing out the issue with the advice. Dr Scelfo has revised his health page on the program this year and I think it is a good piece to read before race day.

By now you should know how much you sweat and how much you need to intake. If it is hotter than you recent training take a little more because you will sweat more. If you feel you are taking in more than your trained with, make sure you are taking sport drink as it contains electrolytes.

Potties are at each aid station and in the parks

Hope this helps

I just finished my last long walk. I did 8 miles up a lot of hills and with some wind at a 15:40 pace. I am hoping that I keep getting stronger over the next week as I recover from whatever respiratory problem I had. Just some short walks and work-outs for me. Time to taper. Hopefully, the flat terrain and adrenalin will help me beat the sweepers! My list of things to bring just keeps growing! Thank goodness we aren't flying down or it would cost me a fortune. Good luck to everybody. Nobody needs to worry about anything. I am doing enough for everybody!

Meg

Tonight was my last "fun" run.. HILLS.....:rotfl2::rotfl2:

Still indecisive about my weekend running plans. I suspect a lot will depend on tomorrow evening activities. I am leaning towards a nice easy 5 miles for my long run and DH is recommending 8 miles...

Oh well - maybe I will compromise and do 6.5...lol

Otherwise I fly in 7 days and can hardly wait...

I am in my last hours of work....for 2009 :lmao:. But that means 2 weeks vacation. In 7 days, I will be in bed at Pop Century :cool1:. I have seen the video where they show all the merchandise that will be on sale and I am glad my suitcase is half empty going down because it will be pretty full coming back.
I will try to go for a short run this afternoon depending how I feel when I wake up around noon. And then on Friday it will be my last double digit run
(10k) before the half-marathon. That run was planned for Saturday but we are supposed to receive 9" of snow, so...
I am checking the weather for Wednesday when I will fly and so far it looks good.
OK it's dinner time.

Thanks Charles - upthread Dolce reported just that about the water! I meant well, and posted basically my experiences, the blox I take with electrolytes are a bit "chewy" and a sip of water helps them go down - When I did the Chicago Distance Classic in '08 I refused to take any water - I just didnt want to stop for the portapotty!! :rotfl2: It wasnt my best choice!!

ITA "Dance with what brought you this far"!! Thank you for coaching us -

Sandy, glad to hear there is hope and you'll be running next weekend, hopefully with a lot less pain than you've had.

Hi there,
Is there a high resolution of the Donald DIS icon that a lot of people have in their siggies? I want to print it out and use it to decorate my window at the Pop!
See you all soon!

Seriously was not scolding you...

It was a phrase that someone could just casully read and come away with what we used to preach to new runners - drink a lot and often during a race ragardless of training or thirst. It really sounds like you are on top of things. I do worry when I read of folks who are not thinking electrolyte replacement at all and focuss on candy for glycogen supplementation.

Back to hydration, I would encourage all back o packers to drink a mix of sport drink and water. If you happen to be in an event where temps are begining to push through 70 and humidity is higher than you are used to to focus more on the sport drink than plain water.

I baraometer that indicates something is off is hand swelling. By itself, it just says distress, bad diet or bad form. However, if you start feeling nausious, dizzy or confused along with the swelling stop off at an aid station. For the half, it is generally not a problem but you never know.

So far the weather seems to indicate a great weekend and over/under hydration should not be an issue. Lets take care of one another out there Saturday we all want to finish strong!

I personally love using the clif shot gels that they use at the Disney races. I train with them. I've been lucky to be with TnT for this race. In addition to using the gels, I've been eating pretzels at our water stops. I plan on bringing some with me on the race since there won't be any available.

On a side note, as my final push for my fundraising I've offered up the opportunity to pick the spot for my Donald tattoo. A Wisher is in the lead with the most donations. One of the Doctors in my office came in with a donation that didn't put her in the lead, but she requested no tattoo. I'm still hoping my mom comes in with a big donation that helps me meet my goal and if she says no tattoo, then there will be no tattoo (at least no Donald tattoo). It has been keeping me and all of my facebook buddies entertained.

Sandy, glad to hear there is hope and you'll be running next weekend, hopefully with a lot less pain than you've had.

Thanks Patricia - I truly appreciate your support - I feel so much better - I claim it as a miracle... and am praying for a couple more ( No rain, and to finish!! :worship:)

No worries Charles - glad you are monitoring the thread!! :thumbsup2 (and imparting your knowledge, I only know what I've done, what mistakes I've made - and I've not made the over hydrating mistake, but the under...)

Happy New Year everyone!! YAY for 2010 and the year we earn our Donald medals! Just 8 days to go, the final preparations and packing have begun!

Sandy~ Thank you for the help. I think I tend to under drink so I understand your advice. I'm glad you are feeling better, you are going to do great! :wizard:

Charles~ Thanks to you too. I have only used Clif Shots (once!) and am trying out Gu next. Nothing like last minute plans!

queen_mimi~ I hope you are in tip-top shape come race day. I am still getting over whatever I came down with on xmas eve. I am taking Airborne twice each day right now and will up until race day!

Joanne~ Good luck with your last long(ish) run (5? 6.5? 8?).

Diane~ Hope your last double digit run went/goes well today!

MapleGirl~ I only know of the Donald graphic in the size in my sig. You may want to ask Sunny (the creator of it) directly, here's her thread:
http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=2072117

mla1977~ How will you carry your pretzels along?
That's funny about your tattoo/fund raising! You must let us know how this turns out!!

As for me~ I want to do one more long run. That'll be either today or tomorrow. And then 2 short runs and last a 2 mile walk next Thursday (that's what my plan says to do).

Have a great day all! :sunny:

MapleGirl - I like the idea of something in the window. I love the Donald clippie, but can't get a sharp one either. I'm going to make a window sign at the Sharpie booth at the Expo.

Sandy - good to hear there's hope. So cool that your DH is running with Chris. Hope to meet all Friday night.

mla1977 - "THIS SPACE AVAILABLE" Pulling for your mom to come through!

One more longish run tomorrow - five miles. Then two shorties next week! Getting excited and watching the weather.

Off to friends' house for black eyed peas. Mmmm, New Year.
