*Doing the Donald in 2010* Jan. Half Marathon Support Thread!

Jenny,

If you plan on using the new shoes for the race, make sure you break them in first. I'm sure some of the more experienced runners can tell you how to do that best.

I bought my shoes about a month ago. The old ones weren't bad, but they got tight after about 9 miles. I am really enjoying my new pair!

Bummed - no 5k race today.... DH is pretty sick and stubborn, If I run he will run and he doesn't need to run.. Guess I will just do an easy 5 miler today in the rain..lol

Hope everyone has a great weekend

If your shoes are fitted properly and you have the correct shoes you should be good to go with 5-15 miles on the shoes pre-race. That does not mean wearing them to the airport and race start and calling those miles.

If you get shoes for Christmas you should be fine if you take them out for a few spins.

First you should wear them for an hour or so indoors just to make sure you like them - assuming new style from your old style or any other change such as size. Then take them on a 3-6 mile run/walk to see how they feel. Keep it close to home and keep thinking about how your feet feel. Any hot spots or slipping that may need attention. Take a couple of these length runs then get out for at least one long run in the shoes pre-race. For a half I would try to get 6-8 miles under them then put them up for the race.
More Coaching to follow

Keep a log of you miles on your shoes! I can almost guarantee that your shoes need replaced well before you look at them and I need new shoes. For most of us shoes only last 300 – 500 miles. If weight challenged or if you have a structural issue, you will only get the lower end of the range.
If you have not been fitted in a running store – get to a running store – not a box store like WalMart of Dicks Sporting goods as the person in the shoe department may have been selling fishing gear yesterday. You will be sized, your feet evaluated for arch type and given 2+ pairs of shoes to try. Take them for a quick little spin in the store, out the door or on the treadmill; different stores have different policies. You want to have the sales person look at your gait to make sure they have you in the correct type of shoe – cushion, stability, motion control. Only if you are split between two or more shoes should styling come into play.
When you get your shoes home take a Sharpie and make a code on the shoe so you will know what pair you have on. I use purchase date (mm-yy) on the inner side of the shoe sole. Then break them in as above.

Never wear your running/walking shoes for anything other than running/walking. Don’t wear them to the store or out for a night; only for training and racing. Log the miles as you train so you can keep track of the shoe life. Never wear the shoes for training two days straight (another reason to wear them only for running). The foams used in the shoes need time to recover just like the muscle fibers in your legs. They need to dry out also; else folks will wonder where the teenage boy is when you walk into a room.

A helpful hint is to purchase two pairs of shoes and rotate them. I have about 150 miles difference between both pairs of shoes at any one time. That allows me to make a style change to see if I like it while only investing in one shoe from the new style. Having the 150 mile difference between shoes also give you a gage of whether the older shoe is nearing its end. If the old shoe feels too hard, or you find yourself skipping the use and staying in the new shoe, it is time to retire the old shoe.

Hope this helps and sorry if I got long winded

Thanks for all the help with the shoes everyone! I knew I'd need to break any new shoes in before the race, but I didn't realize I shouldn't be running with the same shoes 2 days in a row. I've had the same shoes style for my last 3 pairs (Brooks Adrenaline) and I've really liked them. So I think I'll get the same shoe again and they should be broken in by race day. Charles I really like your tip of keeping a log of how many miles I've done on the shoes. Then it will be much easier to know when I'll need a replacement.:goodvibes

Good evening
I went for my medium run this morning (it was only 7.5 milles: ONLY :lmao:) and I am very lucky because there is still no snow on the ground so I was able to run on the bike trail. It went pretty well.
Tomorrow is a day off and I am back on Monday for my log run. It will be 18k and the first time I will be doing that distance. 3 more long runs left before taper time.

Yesterday I had a really big panic attack. I saw the thread of bib number, so I went to check it out and could not find my name :scared1:. I wrote track shack but naturally no answer. Then I tried again and the web site for checking our bib number was not there anymore and I saw on the Goofy thread a post by Katie saying that most likely they had not finished assigning the bib numbers. I do have the confirmation that I am registerd and now I will wait to check when it will be on the official marathon week-end website. And hoping to have an answer from my e-mail.
Have a nice week-end, back to the SEC football game.

Howdy all!
I know this thread has been going on for a while now, but I wanted to jump in. My husband and I were going to run the half together, our first, but life happened...stuff with work...a massive job offer and possible HUGE move...and long story short, I think I may be running this race solo. :sad1:

I'm not sure I can do it...then I think, OF COURSE I can do it! But I thought perhaps joining a thread would be a good supportive thing to do!

I'm hoping to finish in under 3 hours...I'm not sure how likely that is...I have a torn (not huge but still hurts) meniscus that I've been cleared to run on, but it gives me fits sometimes and forces me to really stick to the Jeff Galloway run/walk/run program.

anyhow...if there are other solo runners out there...just wanted to say howdy! I'm here. I want to run this. I will not be defeated by bumps in the road of life. *sigh*

Campbell, welcome! Keep checking the training threads. There are always people looking for someone to run with. The is a WISH meet at the Pop Century food court Friday afternoon (4:30, I think). You can find like paced people there, too.

I'm a newbie and every long run is a new distance record. Today was eight miles. I am glad to have a couple of days off. After Thursday's five in way too cold temps I put on another layer today. Much better, but still really glad to turn down our street at the end. Pace is staying around 12:30. I don't want to run an hour on the treadmill, but Tuesday's weather forecast is for snow. I'd love to run in dry, cold snow. I tried wet, rainy snow a few weeks ago - lesson learned.

I hope everyone is having a great training weekend.

Hey everyone! I haven't been around for a bit but want to jump in on here too! :)

I was doing great with training until my IT Band for some reason acted up BIG time. Then training pretty much came to a halt. It's been getting better so today I'm going for 10 miles again!

Now if only it wasn't 34 degrees out... lol time to dig out the cold weather gear!

Diane - yes, I don't think they weren't finished so the link is not working. DOn't worry too much. You registered online with Active?? You may try that route. Just thinking outloud. Try emailing them and see if they can help you out with getting a duplicate receipt.

Hang in thre as IT band issues can last for a while there are a lot of great IT band stretches out there that will help loosen up the tissue. Also a foam roller is a great tool to have at home to roll out the offending tissue.

Campbell - hang in there. You are never really running alone at Disney. You will notice folks around you who just appear. Strike up a conversation with someone and soon you will be at the end of the race.

I have run a full on a torn meniscus and it is very doable. Make sure to do you PT (if any prescribed) so you strengthen the muscle around the knee. Most newer runners will over work and strengthen the outter quad muscle leaving the inner quad muscle weak. This can also create pain in the knee while running similar to what you experience with the tear.

Good luck and you will find at least one friend to run with in the mass of 20k

Hey guys! I just tried running out in the cold, ugh. I was able to do it, but I only got up to a litte over 3 miles beause I literally could not feel my butt or thighs. I'm going out now to pick up some thermals to wear under my pants or something. Do you guys have any recommendations?

I really like Cuddle Duds for their "disappearing" under clothes effect. Awesome base layer. They never feel bulky or get bunched up. LOVE THEM! Cuddle Duds makes thermal tops and bottoms. I found some at Kohls the other day for a lot less than I've seen them anywhere else! Highly recommend!!!

I have a pair of Under Armour Frosty Tights...:lmao: love that name. They keep me very toasty when running in the cold. I also have a pair of Asics Thermopolis XP tights...I love these. Very comfy so far. Kept me toast on my Thanksgiving 8k race!!!

thanks so much for the encouragement!! I'm doing the PT faithfully. My PT thinks I'm "pushing it" to run...but the knee surgeon said I was good to go. I'll listen to the answer I like best!!!

Good Morning All!
Well, the butterflies are seriously kicking in! I did my first 8 miler in 25 and breezy conditions yesterday. I must admit, at times if felt like some sort of death march :scared1: This was the first time I ended a long run/walk feeling completely depleted and nearly defeated. BUT...I did it. My time was slower than I had been at 15:40....however, this is still ahead of the dreaded sweepers! I wore underarmor, which I love, but I was still chilled to the bone and it will only get colder here in Iowa. So, I will be looking for some better top layers as I refuse to do the next 3 long runs on a treadmill. I will also be looking for some different shoes. My new-ish Nike Zoom Trainers had been doing well, but I think their gym-design just couldn't hack the 8 miler. I am thinking Asics will be my next try (started with NB).
Anyway, for all of you with physical issues hang in there! If possible, connect and stay connected to a good PT..they have saved me more than once!
Peace,
Anne

Add me to the list of weekend frozen runners... It was 36 out yesterday (NC wimp here..lol) and it was very windy. I swear I ran in all 4 directions and each way there was a headwind. DH says no, I just think by the 4th direction we were too numb to tell....:rotfl2:
Ended up doing 11 miles - and the 1st 4 were so hard between the headwind just trying to warm up but then I was good until the 10th mile. I am so glad that I am running 13 miles in my training because I want to know what I am getting into ...

I hope everyone is doing well..

Oh and I did finally find a GU Gel flavor I like :)
Mint chocolate...yummy

My shoes are well ventilated and I don't want to switch that, but right now with the cold temps it's not doing me any favors.

Any suggestions for keeping toes warm? I wear double layered Wright socks (love 'em).

Ronda

As I don't run I don't know how helpfull this will be.....but I use the warmer packs that you can get, I judy put one in each shoe. I also have a space blanket that I can cut up and wrap around my feet too.

I did my 12 miles on Saturday. My Nikeplus was acting up, but it looked like it recorded the whole run. I should have uploaded the run as soon as I got home, but I didn't do it until last night. Unfortunately, the only thing that got uploaded was my 5 miler on Thursday.

That being said. I felt great after my run. There are two people on my team who are doing the full and it was a down week for them, and there are people who just did the Philly half marathon who came out to keep us company. The park we were at (Tyler State Park) it really nice. The team heads out there a few times per season. It is pretty hilly there though, so it wasn't an easy 12 miles. Nothing as bad as the hills at Valley Forge though. My coach was cracking up since I was doing run/walk intervals. On our second loop she shouted out "Who is this new Megan that we can hardly catch up to?"

I am a bit worried about my teammates who are doing the full. They seemed to be going pretty slow and I'm really hoping that they will be able to maintain their pace. For the full, I plan on heading to MK early (DBF got some awesome pictures at the Princess this year when no one else was in the park) and then making my way to AK to cheer them on then to DHS and walking with them to the end (as much as possible). Since they're walkers, I think this plan could work, but I'm not sure how the busses will work out for me.

Any thoughts?

If I where you I would leave out AK.

See them in MK hop on the monorail to TTC and get the bus to DHS.

You could fit in all three, but it would be very tight time wise, even if they are walking the max time pace allowed.
