Hi all, I need some advice on my next disney trip.
I am taking my sister and her kids once again this summer but she is having another baby. Her due date is 6/11 and I am trying to book my trip for 8/3 to the 18th. I tried to talk her out of going because the baby will be so young (not even 2 months when we leave if she delivers near her due date) But her other kids enjoyed disney so much last summer, that is all they talk about. I didn't want to disappoint them because their crazy mom is on her 5th child. And I sure can't take them all by myself (4 girls-2, 2 1/2, 10 &11 and 3 boys- 8, 9 &12) because the kid to adult ratio will be way off and I can't control all of them, what fun would I have?
Has anybody ever gone to disney in august with a baby this small and what did you use to keep it cool and comfortable (as if those 2 words exist in florida in august outdoors:D )
Thanks so much for your help.:wave2:

My Youngest was born on June 5 and we went to Disney Sept of that same year...It was quite easy as the baby slept in the stroller most of the day. It was very warm that beginning of Sept but I just dressed the baby in one piece t-shirt outfits and it was fine....

I used the nursing stations when I didn't use a bottle and need a break...

But it was fine...

Looking at the ages of the kids I would pay the 10,11 girls or 12 yr old boy to be mother helpers in the park and be permanant hand holder or stroller pushers for the 2 year olds. That might help some of the one on one corrdination...

You cracked me up saying PAY one of the kids to be perment stroller pusher. If I have to pay them, then they can stay here in DE. They are getting a free trip to WDW. I'm trying to find a (light weight maybe) double stroller but my sister hates them b/c she says doubles are heavy). No one needs hands held unless the toddler want to get out but believe it or not my DD 11 and my DNeice 10 took over when my DS and I had those babies, so they take over and the babies call their sisters and us, both mom.

I am not paying anyone I am buying each child $50 disney $ and $50 cash. With that being 5 big kids, that's $500 already :sunny:

We'll make it I was just concerned about a baby that young in that kind of heat. I took my preemie (now the 1 1/2 y.o) when she was 3 months but it wasn't hot because we went in November that year. I don't want it to get heat stroke or really sick. That's why I ask if someone did this or any Dis Nurses can tell me what the concerns maybe before I buy the tickets.

Thanks

We're going twice with an infant. Our daughter was born Thursday night (2/26) and we have trips planned for 5/19-5/25 and 6/6-6/20. Since she's our 1st and we haven't gone yet, I can't give you too much advice, but we got lots of great tips regarding strollers, flying with an infant, the baby care centers, etc. Your sister will obviously be going at a much slower pace, but you should all be fine . You sound like a great aunt to take all those kids!!

I don't know if you've already considered this, but what about the sleeping arrangements for the family? Are you sharing accomodations? What I mean to say is, will the newborn keep everyone up at night? Obviously you don't know because he/she isn't here yet. BUT, if you are sharing accomodations that might be something to consider. A screaming newborn could make for some cranky and overtired travellers if they are awakened throughout the night.
Personally I wouldn't take a newborn in August. I can barely stand it in August. I'm not sure how a newborn would do. I don't know if babies that tiny can use sunscreen. The humidity can be overwhelming at times. My mother is a nurse and wouldn't recommend it. I was last at WDW in August 2003 and was shocked at the tiny babies who had sunburns :(

Have your sister ask her Dr. about her concerns with the heat and such. I know a baby that age can't use sunscreen. Have her talk to her Dr. about that. Make sure you have a hat on the baby and the stroller should have a canopy. You just want to keep the baby out of direct sun as much as possible. They sell little fan attatchments for the stroller and that will help keep the baby cool. You want to make sure the baby keeps well hydrated. Also have your sis ask the Dr. if it is OK to give the baby alittle water. Keep the baby in light clothing. Use the baby care centers to get a break from the heat. The other kids can go too and they have a room with tables and chairs and TV with Disney toons. They sell juice and gummies for the older kids, have a bathroom everyone can use, nursing rooms, changing tables and a full kitchen! They are really wonderful. Here are some links to things that might be helpful to your sis:

Hope all that helps. The youngest my kids were was 8mo so I think I've covered the things we were concerned with. Have a great trip!

we took our 12 week old recently but it was December, I am not sure I would have taken her in August.
I asked my dr about sunscreen, and he said to use it, he said sunscreen was better than sunburn, and to offer plenty to drink, so even though she was only on milk at the time, while we were in Orlando I gave her some water to drink on the warmer days

I live in NE FL. Personally, I would not have a newborn out in the FL heat in August for extended periods of time. Other times of year wouldn't be a problem, but it's much too hot and humid in the summer for newborns. My DD was born in January, but I have several friends who have had summer babies, and their pediatricians warned them to keep indoors as much as possible.

BTW, for anyone concerned about babies in the sun (sunscreen is not recommended for babies under 6 months), a great solution is carrying the baby in a front carrier or sling, and using an umbrella.

I just wanted to say what a cute picture that is!! What a cutie pie!! I love catching pics of the kiddies sleeping.

Thanks, Desnik!

Yes, that's my little Stitch. I have a lot of pictures of her sleeping, because she was usually screaming when she was awake. :(

For the OP, I'd like to add that, obviously, plenty of people do bring infants to WDW in the summer. It's one of those personal decisions. Being a 5-time mom, perhaps your sister is more laid-back. Some of the other posts have good suggestions. Whatever you all decide, I hope you have a great trip! :sunny:

Didn't mean to be funny .... I was serious...but I didn' have any knowledge that you were giving them spending money.... I would then just assign Stoller pushing duties to the older ones as a way to help out...It's the least that they could do....but from the sounds of it the older ones are already very helpful...

FWIW, Zurgswife, I thought that was a great idea, and am filing it away for future reference. :)
