Thank you for all the comments. A few people have asked about which routes we've tried, to get some sort of apology or at least to get the kennel to change their policies, so thought I'd just tell you what we've done:
- Contacted the BBB, which couldn't do anything, because, though the kennel admits what they did (even leaving our Molly lying there on the floor for 5 hours!), and admits that our dogs both died in their care, they refuse to say that what they did was wrong or inappropriate in any way. So we reached an impasse there.
- Contacted the local media consumer watchdog shows, who said that they weren't interested in covering our story; I guess they have better ones, though I've seen stories like a family buying a house that had a dirty driveway, I kid you not!
- Contacted the ABKA, who didn't respond
- Contacted the FDA, who licenses kennels in NC - they said that there is no problem with leaving dogs in group situations unattended.
- Contacted the ASPCA, who said that NC is out of their jurisdiction
- Contacted the local police department, and were told that for it to be animal cruelty here, there has to be a deliberate intent to kill or injure the animals. Since the woman runs a kennel, they said obviously she doesn't intend to kill the animals in her care. Ha...
The lawyer we spoke with said that we shouldn't release the kennel's name, because they could then turn around & sue us for slander. Ironic how the law is to zealous in protecting the kennel owner's rights, not our rights or those of our 2 dead pups...
But if anyone is really interested, you can find them easily by going to the ABKA website (
www.abka.com), click on Find a Service Provider, then see Fully Accredited kennels in Charlotte, NC. This place is the only one here that's fully accredited, which we used to think actually meant something. If I sound bitter it's because I am; I can't even tell how painful it is to know that your dogs died in a particularly horrible way like this. We told the veterinarian we didn't want to see Molly's body - to have that image of her all mangled would have killed me.
I also wanted to say that, because your pups are in the same family & get along normally still doesn't mean they should be left together unattended. I have a friend who had a sheltie & shih tzu (a male & a female) who lived in harmony for 3 years. Then one day she came home from work to find that the sheltie had ripped out the shih tzu's throat. I don't know how she had the courage to keep her sheltie after that; I am afraid that I would have had him put to sleep. Even though I know it wasn't done with malice, or any bad intention, I still don't think I could live with the dog who had killed my other dog. The point is that you just never, ever know - even highly bred dogs can revert to nature under certain circumstances. After I met this woman, we always left Molly in the bedroom & Moo in the living room, separated when we were gone, just to be safe.
I'm going to post Molly & Moo's pictures here, because I think they were beautiful, each in their own way.

Thank you again,

P.S. I didn't want to hijack this thread, but I do want to warn others, so I think that what I'm going to do is paste my pups' story on the Community Board. If you want to respond, you can PM me, or write to that thread, so I don't ttake up the doggie hotel thread any more than I have.
