Doggie Dilemma

Does anyone know if we can drive to Orlando and then rent an RV to take to Fort Wilderness?

We don't want to drive an RV so far w/ gas being what it is, but we do not like leaving our little shih tzu either. So, if there is an RV rental in Orlando, then this might be a solution AND we could stay on-property.

By the way, how many of us have shih tzus??? We need to start a thread and see, but I don't know where??? Community???
I have 2 Shih Tzu's. The old girl who is 12 doesn't like the 1 yr. old though so I ahve to keep them seperate alot or I"m afraid the old won will just have a heart attack from the pup chasing her all day.

heather - I don't know what I would have done if that was Spicey.

I am so sorry....

did you right a complaint letter to BBB and abka.

also contact your state insurance commissioner. an insurance company can't say that their insured was unreliable after they had insurance...

it doesn't work that way.

call the city that this was in and see what you have to do to file a complaint to get their business license taken away.

oh that is so horrible!

can you say what company - so no one else on this site EVER uses them.

thank you for telling us about this very, very painfully situation for you.

Spicey was only starved by our vet.... He won't eat dryfood, and they tried to force him to eat dry food. Well he didn't eat for 4 days....

after that he traveled with me.

Do the Universal resorts allow pets in all of their rooms or is there only a specific group of rooms allotted for people with pets?

The Universal resorts have specific pet rooms. At RPR, all the pets are in one building. At PBH & HRH, the pet rooms are on a couple floors. The only exception would be if there's a hurricane on the horizon. Many Floridians on the coast evacuate to their resorts. That includes those with pets. As long as they have available rooms on any floor or building, they won't turn them away.

Thanks for the info. I had no idea those resorts allowed pets. I guess you really do learn something new everyday! ;)

NOTE: I know how people can get attached to pets, but WDW is no place for pets in the room. Too many other families have to use that room, and allergies can go wild. Additionally, even "good" pets can destroy furnishings.

Again, Universal has pet free families staying in their resorts as well. WDW's rooms could occasionally have dogs staying in them. Assistance dogs are allowed in any room in any hotel. As for even "good" pets destroying furniture, Molly wouldn't be living in my home, if she destroyed the furniture. I certainly wouldn't consider a pet that destroyed my home a "good" pet.

Ditto! He'll do best with the least amount of upheaval in his life. Bringing him with you, although it will make you feel better, will just stress him out. He'd be much more happy in his usual environment with a familiar face checking in on him a few times a day (or better yet staying at your house with him full time).

I feel like I'm repeating myself, but let me again reitterate that not everyone has a trustworthy individual willing to leave their home to stay at yours. I know I wouldn't do it.

Molly loves to travel. She always has. I think I can tell which she prefers. When she travels with us, she eats, sleeps, etc. as she normally does. When we leave her to go on cruises (the only time we travel w/o her), she won't eat, & gets very nervous, even to the point that she pulls patches of her hair out. :guilty: This is leaving her with people that she loves, when we're with her.

Sorry, but I don't think someone dropping by my home a couple times each day to check in on her, is better than us being able to check in on her multiple times per day & also being with her at night. I can make sure she's eating well, & doing okay.

All Loews hotels allow pets. :dog: As a matter, several of the nicer hotel chains do.

I agree with tarheelmjfan. I would not trust anyone to come to my home to take care of Scruffy, our Shih-Tzu. If he escaped he would never come to a stranger to go back in the house. We tried boarding him at the kennel last week and it was stressful to the max. On the advice of many weswitched our PBH room to a pet one and he's going with us in October. He will go to their kennel for a few hours, then we'll pick him up whenever we go to the room. He will not be left unattended in the room unless he proves he can handle i without howling, regardless of Loews policy. They told me at the hotel that it was okay if he barked, he was just talking to the neighbors :rotfl:. Quite a difference from Disney resorts!

Thank you for all the comments. A few people have asked about which routes we've tried, to get some sort of apology or at least to get the kennel to change their policies, so thought I'd just tell you what we've done:

- Contacted the BBB, which couldn't do anything, because, though the kennel admits what they did (even leaving our Molly lying there on the floor for 5 hours!), and admits that our dogs both died in their care, they refuse to say that what they did was wrong or inappropriate in any way. So we reached an impasse there.
- Contacted the local media consumer watchdog shows, who said that they weren't interested in covering our story; I guess they have better ones, though I've seen stories like a family buying a house that had a dirty driveway, I kid you not!
- Contacted the ABKA, who didn't respond
- Contacted the FDA, who licenses kennels in NC - they said that there is no problem with leaving dogs in group situations unattended.
- Contacted the ASPCA, who said that NC is out of their jurisdiction
- Contacted the local police department, and were told that for it to be animal cruelty here, there has to be a deliberate intent to kill or injure the animals. Since the woman runs a kennel, they said obviously she doesn't intend to kill the animals in her care. Ha...

The lawyer we spoke with said that we shouldn't release the kennel's name, because they could then turn around & sue us for slander. Ironic how the law is to zealous in protecting the kennel owner's rights, not our rights or those of our 2 dead pups...

But if anyone is really interested, you can find them easily by going to the ABKA website (www.abka.com), click on Find a Service Provider, then see Fully Accredited kennels in Charlotte, NC. This place is the only one here that's fully accredited, which we used to think actually meant something. If I sound bitter it's because I am; I can't even tell how painful it is to know that your dogs died in a particularly horrible way like this. We told the veterinarian we didn't want to see Molly's body - to have that image of her all mangled would have killed me.

I also wanted to say that, because your pups are in the same family & get along normally still doesn't mean they should be left together unattended. I have a friend who had a sheltie & shih tzu (a male & a female) who lived in harmony for 3 years. Then one day she came home from work to find that the sheltie had ripped out the shih tzu's throat. I don't know how she had the courage to keep her sheltie after that; I am afraid that I would have had him put to sleep. Even though I know it wasn't done with malice, or any bad intention, I still don't think I could live with the dog who had killed my other dog. The point is that you just never, ever know - even highly bred dogs can revert to nature under certain circumstances. After I met this woman, we always left Molly in the bedroom & Moo in the living room, separated when we were gone, just to be safe.

I'm going to post Molly & Moo's pictures here, because I think they were beautiful, each in their own way.

Thank you again,
Heather W

P.S. I didn't want to hijack this thread, but I do want to warn others, so I think that what I'm going to do is paste my pups' story on the Community Board. If you want to respond, you can PM me, or write to that thread, so I don't ttake up the doggie hotel thread any more than I have.

Ok, now I'm sitting here crying, that is just heartbreaking!!! They look like very loving and beautiful dogs... I'm so sorry!! :grouphug: We are leaving in 4 days and I'm more worried that excited, because, for the first time we are leaving our girls at this pet resort for ten days!!! I just spoke to one of my friends who deals locally with ASPCA and she not only spoke highly of this place, but, also uses it for her dogs when she goes on vacation. My mom usually stays with them, but, she is coming with us. Last night, I called her to uninvite her, so, that she could stay home with our dogs.Of course, I was only kidding (was I really kidding?) I would absolutey love if Disney made a pet friendly resort. I would be willing to pay whatever they asked just to have the peace of mind.

Oh Heather your story is so sad! And your dogs are so beautiful! I'm so sorry that happened to you! I hope you get some justice somehow.

I recently boarded our dog for the first time, we went to a wedding in Atlanta and took him to the Pet Lodge-Pet Resort. It was a pretty nice set up and you could book a doggie suite or just regular room. You could pay extra for extra walks or play time. There were a lot of dogs! We brought his own food and toys and it cost approx 107.00 for 3 days. He seemed okay when we picked him up but he couldn't bark for almost 3 days (voice was so hoarse) so he must have done some heavy duty barking in there.

Sneaking a dog into a WDW hotel is crazy-don't try it!
