Dog Trainer - Suffolk/Long Island

I am looking for a trainer that deals with aggresion issues. I have a 15 lb. 11 year old chi/mix who is just getting out of hand. She has aggression issues with our other Corgi/chi mix who is almost 7. They have lived together for over 6 years. Never been buddies but were ok together. Within past 6 months, she will growl at him for everything. Mostly a food issue but even if if moves in the middle of the night, it will set her off. She has nipped by DH twice as he would try to stop her.

I need someone who deals with this type of issued. TIA.

My neighbor had similar issues that you are having. her Vet recommended this place and her dogs are GREAT now! She has a Pomeranian and a corgi and the pom was very nasty and aggressive towards the corgi.

Years ago I contacted a man in Suffolk county I think he was in hauppauge - he is a retired k-9 officer. He has a great reputation too. I will see if I can find his name and number for you.

Thank you. I just sent them an email. I would hate to have to give up my dog but we can't keep going on this way with her.

I am sorry but no matter how much you love that dog in a few years he will bite someone and you will be very unhappy. Can not tell you what to do but think hard about it. having another dog live in fear is not right.

Any sudden change in behavior warrants a vet visit. Your dog is getting older and you should first rule out a medical cause. Pain, loss of vision or hearing can often cause an older dog to begin behaving this way.

Once your vet has ruled out a medical issue, then training should commence.

I second the vote for a vet visit...especially since the dog is 11. COuld be pain and that will make them very grumpy. Good luck. We've dealt with fear aggression and despite the very negative comments here, it CAN be managed with hard work, love and patience...but yes, a professional is a must.

She is doing the responsible thing and trying to help the dog deal with the issues...I know I should ignore these comments, but so not in the mood today.

I found the other trainer's number and name! He is a friend of my Dads and has been in this business for over 30 years. Years ago he helped me out when we first got my dog. His name is Don.

I do have an appointment with the vet on Monday. We always take our dogs to the vet for their annual check up or anytime they may need care. We have discussed this with the vet in the past but he didn't seem to think it was a major issue.

I am concerned with my dog hurting someone, which is the reason i am trying to correct the situation. I realize I may not be able to keep the 2 of them but I will not have her put down. If I do find her another home, I think she would do fine in a home where she was the only dog.

I wish you the best with her and the new owners. I would make sure they know about her behavor or they may not be the right one for her. you would not want them after one problem to over react and put her down because they did not know.
