Dog tapeworms ?

Has anyone's dog have tapeworms? We took our golden last week for his shots and took a fecal sample. I just got a call from the vet saying that our dog has tapeworms. This is really grossing me out. I have not seen any evidence of this. Our dog is on frontline so I am confused as to how he got this. I was told that a shot will take care of it. I hope so. He goes in for the shot tonight.

Frontline is not a flea repellant, it kills the flea when it gets on your dog. I treat my yard along with the dogs

I use tal-star. You can get it through a do it yourself pest control or order it online. Luckily my best friends dad can order it for me

My dogs are on frontline too but once in a while will still get tapeworms. I usually treat them with pills, I didn't know they had a shot available. The pills are very expensive and I'm not convinced they ever get rid of all of them.

It is gross but treatable.

I know at our vet they now offer a heartguard plus with a med built in for tapeworms. I alternate regular heartguard and then the one with the tapeworm medicine every other month. If you dont feel like they are gone, ask your vet about a larger dose. I had a dog with a stubborn tapeworm and had to treat him with twice the amount i normally would have

It only takes one flea that your pets ingests to get tapeworm., or if he eats bunnies or mice. I have not heard of the heartgard that takes care of tapeworms, just roundworms and hookworms.
There is a shot, works quick. Pill, yes very expensive, but works too.

At our animal hospital we use a pharmacy that compounds the monthly heartworm preventative for the individual pet's weight range that includes flea "birth control", tapeworms,hookworms, whipworms and roundworms and only costs 95.05 per pet for a 12 month supply (owners of large breed dogs love this!).

BTW, anyone ever notice that your dog only seems to pass the tapeworm segments in it's stool when you are in public (like a dog show!!) or have company over?
