We are a family of 4 looking to do the Helicopter dog sledding excursion (August) and trying to decide on which port to do this in. I'm not sure if we'll be booking direct with DCL or doing this privately, but I am interested in peoples options on the following:
  • which port and why?
  • if you booked privately which company and factor which made you go with them? All the top provider have very good reviews and a few bad ones so I would like to stay on the plus over the negatives
Thanks in advance

I like to say in choosing those ports.... what highlights are you prepared to miss....
  • Juneau » whale watching and Mendenhall
  • Skagway » White Pass Railway
See if there is a sledding combo that includes one of the above activities.

Good way to approach it. I think whale watching would be high on my girls list.

Any truth to more cancellations in Juneau?

I booked mine through DCL for Skagway but it got cancelled two weeks prior sailing. We went late August 2015. I was able to book it for Juneau right away. This is also the reason why I booked for Skagway initially - to have Juneau as a backup. If it got cancelled again in Juneau, then it's fate! I really wanted to do the canoe excursion at Juneau but instead we did Ziplining at Skagway. It was great but I still wish I was able to do the canoe excursion. We definitely loved the dog sledding excursion.

Have fun planning!

Thanks for the input. Having teh back up plan was along the lines of my thinking as well.

We did it with Temsco Helicopters in Skagway. It was excellent and yes, they are more frequently canceled out of Juneau. The above poster's was not canceled due to weather if it was canceled two weeks prior. No need to book through DCL either. In Juneau Orca Enterprises is great for whale watching - we've gone with them twice. Enjoy...Alaska is spectacular.

We did the Dog Sled summer camp in Juneau and it was awesome. I don't think you can go wrong either place, you just have to look at what other things you may want to do in each city. We booked through DCL and had no issues (price was comparable).

With regards to whale watching....
  • Juneau offers large and majestic Humpbacks
  • Vancouver (Storybrooke) offers smaller and faster Orcas

I suggest booking the dog sled at the first possible port. If the weather is bad there, there is another possibility at the next port.

Thanks will do that. Seems Temsco is the operation to go with in Skagway.
