Any help would be appreciated... We have a 5 year old german pointer/lab mix, who up until recently almost always had a moist nose. In the past 2 weeks the left side of his nose has become dry and cracked, while the right side was still a bit moist. In the last few days we noticed that the right side is getting drier. Anyone out there think we should be concerned enough to take Max to the Vet?

Since this has been going on for two weeks I assume you've called the vet and asked their advice? If not, call them and ask them if they feel they need to see your dog. It might just be allergies or something but why take the chance.

Call the vet first- but yes, I would be concerned enough to take my dog in.

The nose is one of the places that sort of "shows" the health of th edog, so if his is dry and cracked, I'd take him in, especially since you said that is something unusual for him.

He may some sort of infection or fungal thing going on or whatever. The problem with a dog's nose is that they can lick it, so if you put anything opical on it, they will immediately lick it off.

I don't know your relationship with your vet but hopefully you can get a little "pre-counsel" before bringing your dog in. Our vet is very accessible but I know that isn't the norm for most vets.

As previous posters have said, a dogs nose tells a lot so a big change can be an indication of allergies (also mentioned) and possibly something more serious.

Good luck and be sure to let us know how this pans out.
