I have been a board watcher for many years. I can think of no better place to get advice on this. My husband and I are leaving for Disney World in three weeks for 8 days to celebrate our 20 yr. Anniversary. The problem is our 6 yr. old beloved dog was diagnosed with aggressive cancer 2 weeks ago. We are heart broken. He has a few weeks to a few months to live. We have noticed this weekend his breathing is a little congested. We are bring him to the vet a few days before we leave for a checkup. If we are told his time is short do we hope for the best and leave, put him to sleep or cancel vacation?

We put him to down after noticing he would not his head down or lay on his side. His back legs would give out sometimes also. The Vet said now would be the best time to put him down before he has a lot of pain. it broke my heart but I knew it was for the best.

I am so very sorry about your dear dog. It sounds as though you gave him a wonderful, full and happy life. It's bittersweet that their lives are shorter than ours mostly, but there is a reason-they are born perfect and given to us to enrich ours.
Have a wonderful trip - it sounds as though it will be quite memorable and fun!

I am so very sorry that you're going through this. I, too, had to make this decision about 2 years ago and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done. It's going to hurt for awhile but I promise that you will start to feel better. Eventually smiles and happy memories will replace the tears. You're in my thoughts.

The saddest I have ever been in my whole life was when we had to put down our beloved lab Sully, aged 10. It is very difficult and do not let anybody make you feel like your pain isn't justified...I still cry sometimes thinking about him and he's been gone for two years.

You did your best by him and now you can celebrate his wonderful memory in Disney World...I know that's how I'd want my loved ones to celebrate me!

I am so sorry for your loss. My husband and I are dog lovers and have a wonderful rescue dog. when we go to Disney that is the only thing that makes us sad, is to leave our beautiful Lola.

I am so sorry that you have just gone through this. You cannot imagine how close this is to my heart. We just lost my sweetest heart of a dog, my Saint Bernard, to bone cancer after an amazing 8 month battle. When we went on our Disney trip last September 5 months after diagnosis, it was a very hard thing to do. I was worried he would die and then there was the guilt over missing these precious days of his life. I prayed God would give me a clear sign when it was time and he did--literally good one day, not eating and not standing up the next. The hardest day of my life but there was not doubt. I am glad for your sake that it was very clear for you so you didn't have to suffer with this decision and that your beloved dog didn't have to either.

It is so hard and I know you are mourning. I hope that everyday will get easier. Allow yourself times to cry and to mourn that your pet had to get cancer. I still get mad at that. But I know that we will see our beloved pets in heaven. Until then, try to enjoy your anniversary trip. The memories of your dog will always stay in your heart but you can allow yourself to heal and have a good time. :littleangel:
