Dog Food Brand

Our dog Juno(2 year old black lab. She was rescued from a puppy mill) has skin problems and a few gastrointestinal issues. She does the best on Tractor Supply's house brand. We do grain free beef and it works well for her. Some of the higher end grain free foods bother her stomach.

4health? That's what my dogs eat also. They used to get the regular one but I started buying the grain free because the younger one (8 months) was having some issues with gas. The grain free has been great. No more issues.

for almost 9 of our dalmatians years...she was on Purina lamb and rice smart choice...and then they changed the mixture...she immediately became sick with the runs..so we did the chicken and rice mixture that we cooked until she became healthy (four or so days) and then did the dogfood advisor...we chose 4health...and it was salmon and potatoes...she hasnt had any issues for the last year...it is up there with blue ..so we are happy with her looking good..and acting good..she will be ten in April...
But while she was on purina one...we had no issues until the mixture changed...some vets say what ever your doing ..its ok...but I like the idea of the ingredients that she is eating now

There are so many great selections now a days. I have been feeding my giant breed dogs - Solid Gold for over 15 years. So far so good.

The main thing really is the first 3-5 ingredients.

We have our three boys on the Kirkland Lamb dog food. We originally had our first dog on Blue Buffalo, but comparing the ingredients the Costco brand seemed to have the same important ingredients and none of the filler...glad we discovered this because if we had continued with the Blue Buffalo with the THREE dogs their food budget would be more than ours!

I thought the same way. All my dogs had always eaten basic dog food from the grocery store and they were always fine. My last dog (Shepard mix) was 14 when he died.
Then I got a new puppy and took him to the pet store for supplies. My cousin worked there and she helped me get the stuff I needed. When we got to the treats she started telling me all kinds of horror stories about certain treats making dogs sick and even killing them. I decided to do a little research. It seems lots of dogs have to get sick or even die before a recall on a food or treat is issued. I didn't want my puppy to be one them so I went to dog food advisor and stay away from the grocery store stuff.

My dog is 11 years old now. Since he was a puppy, we've fed him the Kirkland (Costco) brand of dog food. He loves it.

to the conversation what we feed them as it always gets into a whats better debate eventually when it comes to this subject You already know about how important it is to switch over gradually

I will add though that yes the first 3 to 5 ingredients are the main things to watch for and to avoid food that you can get at a grocery store that someone said is just plain silly Our oldest pointer turned 14 last September must be doing something right

Ellie is a wiemamarner has gas issues with corn meal and chicken byproduct.

Best advise is buy whats in your budget, good for your dog and stick with it till dog wouldn't eat it anymore or has issues.

I think people are just more careful what they eat than they were back in the day. It makes sense that we would be more careful with what we feed our pets too. I wouldn't eat scraps that were scrapped up off of the floor of a slaughterhouse, so why would I feed my pet that crap?

Definitely stay away from Purina Beneful. Horrible stuff!

Also that some people are snobby over what brands they feed their dogs.

Some dogs can eat just about anything and be health, some can't.

My dog has Royal Canin, they do breed specific varieties, so he has that.

I was referring to people having to drink bottled water. Tap water isn't good enough for them but when they put the same water into a plastic bottle, give it a name, and charge them 10x the cost of the water they can't get enough!! Same idea for dog food.

Your dog would love the scraps from a slaughter house! it would be in heaven!! In Nature when an animal is killed and the alpha dog gets to eat it goes right for the guts! the organ meats are what it wants. The lower dogs get the muscle meat.

My yellow lab was on Solid Gold for several years, and did well. He's older now, and has a few health concerns so now he's on a prescription dog food.

We recently found a stray dog, 4 months now, and we've adopted him into our family. I tried Solid Gold, but didn't have as good of the results I did with my lab. I changed his food to Wellness Core and it's working out much better.

I think dogs respond differently to various dog foods. So, it's a try and see approach.

I transitioned my stray from the Solid Gold to the Wellness Core over a 1 month period. Changing dog foods need to be done slowly, or you will end up with issues.

I also know people who have dogs that live long lives on many other different dog foods. No one food is right for all dogs.

I will tell you this...

I will NEVER feed an animal Blue Buffalo ever again. After giving it to one of my cats, he got very ill. Nothing the doctor did helped. FInally, I switched his food to just try ANYTHING. Within a day or so he was fine.

Then I got to researching. There are a lot of stories out there about Blue Buffalo causing health problems in many cats and dogs. Google it. It is sad, especially since Blue Buffalo refuses to even respond to the possibility. Some of what they posted in response is just disgusting and shows the type of company they are.
