Dog Food Brand

I was referring to people having to drink bottled water. Tap water isn't good enough for them but when they put the same water into a plastic bottle, give it a name, and charge them 10x the cost of the water they can't get enough!! Same idea for dog food.

Your dog would love the scraps from a slaughter house! it would be in heaven!! In Nature when an animal is killed and the alpha dog gets to eat it goes right for the guts! the organ meats are what it wants. The lower dogs get the muscle meat.

:thumbsup2:thumbsup2:thumbsup2

times million my husband hunts and the dog got to eat the deer guts after gutted the deer. she ate so much she layed on the kitchen floor all day and she hates the kitchen floor.

I don't usuAlly get into all this but, now I'm nervous. The food I feed my dogs was rated 1! But my one dog is 16 and has had the same brand for 13 years and he seems fine. But now I'm not sure if I shouldn't change him?

Why would you be nervous? if it has kept them healthy and happy for 13 yrs why would you rock the boat?

I feel like a bad owner!

please don't change what is working for your dog. If your dog is healthy then your shouldn't care what brand your feed them.

What if you change brands and the dog gets sick?

Have been using Fromms for years now and it is only one I would ever use. They have never been recalled. We feed the Salmon and veggie formula. The vet always comments on their skin and great body condition. We have a 14, 13 and 9yr old doggies. It is a little more expensive but totally worth it. We buy ours from a local doggie boutique.
I love Fromms. My cats and my dogs are all on Fromms and they do very well. Plus, Fromms is made right here in Wisconsin :thumbsup2. Our locally owned pet store's personal brand of "natural" cat food is really Fromms and that's what we feed the cats. The standard poodle is on Fromms Adult Gold and the maltese is on Grain-Free Gamebird. Since the maltese is happily eating the poodle's food I think I'll go with all Gold once the bag of Gamebird is gone.

I think one of the major differences between a good quality food and a poor quality food is poop size and firmness. In a good quality food more of the nutrients are absorbed and less filler is pooped out so you get nice firm and compact poops. Much easier to pick up! My sister feeds some crappy Box Store (I think Wal*Mart) brand of dog food to all her animals (dogs and cats alike) and the dogs' poop is huge and mushy. ick.

Good grief you are doing more than fine You're dog is 16 (I stated earlier our eldest of 7 is 14 & also that I wasn't going to get into the debate of which food is better ) If it ain't broke don't fix it

we feed our 1 yr old lab mix Pro Plan Select Sensitive Skin and Stomach. When we adopted her she was eating Purina Puppy Chow...she had all kinds of worms and giardia poor thing and her poop was awful:( we got her meds and switched her food after a few weeks to Fromms puppy. We had heard Fromms was a great food but it didn't agree with our dog, and maybe it was from all the worms/giardia, so it's hard to say , but we eventually switched to the Pro Plan and she's been good ever since. I wonder if the Fromms would be more agreeable now that the worms/giardia has been cleared up , but I figure if she's good now, why mess around?

We had a dog who lived to be over 19. She are waldbaums ( a local grocery chain) dog food for most of that time. When she was older around 17 my parents switched to a softer food because she had trouble chewing. She had joint problems and one night fell and couldn't get up. Since she was left alone for several hours a day my parents thought it was best to put her down so she would fall and be in pain for hour until someone came home. So if your dog does fine on the food you feed him I wouldn't change it

Our dogs (and cats!) get Blue Buffalo, both wet and dry. No problems, and they love it.

we use Kirkland grain free. In the bowl it looks exactly like the Blue Buffalo (I think) that my BIL feeds his dog. I know Kirkland usually has brand name products with their name on it and I did read somewhere that this is the case with this dog food.
Good value and on the rating system it was about equal to Blue Buffalo

I am using Simply Nourish right now. I used to use a Grain Free feed; however, my dog is now almost 14 and is slowing heading into kidney slowdown and needs a food with a much lower protein percentage.

I haven't used grocery store brands in many years. I think they can be fine; however, during the last recall a few years ago (the Chinese melamine issues), I think it came to light that some of these big corporations were not too particular where their source ingredients came from. It was then that I switched to companies that were producing in smaller batches and seemed more concerned with quality control.

In response to the comments about slaughter house meat and how much your dogs would love it. Well, sure they would. However, if any of you have watch ANY of the food documentaries that are out there now about how sick our own meat is, then why would you want to feed your pet that? At least we humans (we can hope) are getting the sick cows. Those go off to the rendering facility and put into your pet food. I prefer to use a brand that is looking for better quality sources.

But that's the deal. Prime cuts of meat aren't going into pet foods - even the more expensive ones. They're going to be the trim pieces and maybe the organs. And there's nothing wrong with those in terms of providing proper nourishment for a carnivore.

Too often we as humans insert our own ideals. We like perfect looking food. We want fish fillets that look perfect and perfect looking produce. The examples that don't look so perfect often go to processed foods. An animal doesn't really care.

I also agree if your dog has been healthy and really a good ripe old age...and is having a food that isnt rated high...dont change..your dog does well with what you are feeding him..
We wouldnt of changed but our dalmatian got sick when the company that made the dog food changed the foods in it...
She was just shy of her 9th birthday at that time...she is almost ten and has been on the new kind 4health for this last year and she is doing great AGAIn...

so if you dont need to change ask your vet and he will tell you what to do

We are looking for a new dog food. Something not made by Diamond. Our dog had been doing great on Diamond Naturals until they changed the formula. $348 vet bill later, I am done with them.

Robin, what pet store do you go to? Do they make a personal brand version of the Fromms for dogs? We are also in the Madison area.

We have a teddy bear dog and have been buying small breed lamb and rice. Does anyone have any concerns about rice given daily (arsenic)?

Thanks for your help!

Well we always switched it up. We would buy different kinds of food, sometimes different each week. They didn't care and they loved pretty much all brands, there were only a few times I could tell they weren't thrilled. But, I guess that goes against the rule of changing gradually and also goes against the rules of buying expensive stuff. We sometimes bought the more expensive stuff when it was on sale, and sometimes bought the more regular stuff.

Our cat lived to 19 years old, one dog lived to 15 and the other to 13 (both past life span for their breeds) and they were healthy and happy all their lives, right to the end.

They also got a lot of exercise, a lot of love and a lot of table scraps lol.

(Not recommending everyone do it this way of course.)

We have switched to a completely grain free, salmon based food, based on recommendations from our trainer and our vet. Bonus is it is inexpensive as it is under the Costco brand. (We used to feed a lamb and rice formula.)

Excellent food, have seen the difference in our dogs already.

The Costco brand is actually made by Diamond. They manufacture a long list of dog food brands.
