Our GSD turned his stomach a month ago. We caught it in time and got him to the Vet for some quick surgery to correct it. He is doing very well now but he is down almost 20pounds in weight. I need some ideas on how to put some meat back on his bones. I thought about adding puppy food back into his diet for a while. Anybody out there have any other ideas? I will be talking to my Vet in the next couple of days to run all ideas by him and see what he suggests. Thanks

Puppy food would be a good choice for adding calories, but you don't want to add a lot more bulk. do you know what I mean? dry food swells up in their tummies. other good choices are chicken baby food (just the strained meat in a jar) or you could just cook chicken breasts for him and give them a quick chop in the food processor, peanut butter sandwiches, ground beef (boiled)mixed with baby cereal (rice is good).
Be sure to have his dry food locked away where he can't get to it by accident, and have an elevated dog dish for eating and drinking.
Those doggies are just babies with 4 legs!

try putting dry food in the mircowave for 20 seconds. It will release a lot of the smell in the food.

We had a really finicky poodle when I was growing up. She would go several days without eating & was only about 14 pounds after a good meal. My Mom started buying Liver Pudding (I know - YUCK!!!, but dogs love it) she would slice off a little, heat it in the microwave, then add water to water it down, mix it up like a thin gravy & pour it over her food. She LOVED it. I've heard that dogs go more by smell than by taste, this (if I remember correctly) has almost a sausage smell & you buy it where sausage is sold. When she started eating it well, we could just use less of it as long as she still had a little bit of the smell, she was fine. Warning, now that I'm thinking about it, seems like my moms boxer would get a little bit of gas from it, but boy did she like it.

We usually used cooked brown rice wtih some boiled chicken mixed in with the rice. Puppy food is high in protein and would help to add the weight onto the dog. May want to try mixing some puppy canned food in with the dry food. We usually mix about a 2 or 3 tablespoons into the dry food. Usually I am trying to get weight off of my dogs. If he likes cottage cheese you can also mix that into the food too. You may want to check with the vet to see if he has any suggestions on how to get the weight back onto your dog.

...sweet potatoes. I give my girl a half(cooked) with her food. Its really good for them and better than if you gave them people food
like pasta or bread(not good!)
