Does your school enforce the dress code??

This is an inspired thread! ;)

We have a dress code at my girls high school. They send it home at the beginning of every school year and then add updates throughout the year. (The most recent one about not wearing bandanas on your head). It is rather extensive, and spells out exactly what they can and cannot wear... If kids are not adhering to the dress code they are supposed to either put on their PE clothes or be sent home.

Well thats all fine and dandy but I swear they do not enforce the dress code what so ever. Jeff drives the girls to school every day and he says he cannot believe what he sees the kids (mostly the girls) wearing.

It really makes me mad. First at the parents for allowing their kids to go out like that.... (my girls know they would never be allowed to wear most of that stuff..luckily they do not want to!) but also at the school for not enforcing their own rules. The girls say that *sometimes* girls are sent to the office for inappropriate clothing... but often not.

my older dd told me last week that she "can't wait to get to high school where there's no dress code."

the reality is, the same dress code applies in both miffle school and high school. it's strictly enforced in the middle school, but apparently not so strictly enforced at the high school.

Our high school just updated the dress code for next year.
NO tank tops are allowed. Right, this is Arizona! The kids are in school when it is triple digit temperatures outside. I can't see them even begin to enforce that one.

DD has a teacher who told the class that she will wear tank tops and that the dress code does not apply to teachers/administration.
There is a picture of the principle in the yearbook wearing an unbelievably short dress. Shorter than what the official dress code allows for the kids.

With examples like that it's no wonder the kids just ignore the dress code.

As a child I was convinced school dress codes were an extreme violation of my Civil Rights. As an adult, I have voted to implement school uniforms.

My oldest son is in a Private Lutheran School. Yes there is a dress code. Yes it is enforced. Last week, an 8th Grade Girl was given 2 days lunchtime detention for showing up with a Hickey on her neck and told if it happens again she will be suspended.

The high school I went too does not allow shorts (this was the rule when I attended as well). Yes, that is correct, in FLORIDA there is no shorts allowed????? The only exception is on Wednesdays--you can wear shorts that are longer than your fingertips. Why Wednesday??? It is one of lifes big mysteries:D

You betcha they are enforced! When DS was in school there was a teacher (retired Army) that was notorious for sending the boys to the office for showing their boxers above their jeans. Then he decided that he would bring a roll of twine to school and tie their pants up for them...in a knot they couldn't untie! Hilarious! And the girls are sent home for short skirts/shorts. Sometimes it is hard to find clothes that meet the standard.

hmm yeah at times the locals enforce, but other times it sems to be ignored. A lot of parts ignored locally are based on the unavailabilty of clothing in stores in town to meet dress code. dd's school requires shorts below finger tips , skirts to knee... no sleeveless or strapless, tanks must be 2 fingers wide,, ( shes in 6th grade) but try and buy a pair of girls or young misses shorts in a length that they will accept,,lol,, they do let that slide by an inch or 2,, dd is mad right now,, she wore a visor to school last week to keep the rain out her eyes, and didnt take it off when she entered the building. school rescoure officer took it up and wont return it till last day of school she wanted me to cause a fuss ( she had bought it with her allowance and was rather fond of it when she was riding her bike or playing out in yard.) i refused to, told her i wasnt going to argue when she was in the wrong. she poutted a bit but when she found out i was not gonna give she acceptd that she was wrong and the Officer was in the right. besides she gets it back the end of this week anyway didnt see tha big deal ..lol her argue ment was htat he had his on still.. i reminded her that he wears a hat as part of his uniform,, not by choice,, she had worn her cap through the building into the caffeteria, gotten her breakfast and payed,, was sitting at table eating, she says she forgot the cap was on.

in 2000 and 2001 the year i gradurated. i saw kids wear house slippers to school and night gowns next year they enforced it said no bedroom slippers

Yep. And I am the wardrobe nazi.

Shorts/skirts must be fingertip lenth, no hats inside school, when girls lift their arms - no belly can show with short shirts or low jeans, etc.

One of my duties is to send them to the gym to change or have them call parents.

Must be why I'm so popular at our middle school... Don't you wish you were me?

My son's school, middle school, doesn't really have a dress code. Well, you have to wear clothes and they have to be decent.

We just got a new dress code last week so it remains to be seen if it will be enforced or not. No belly baring shirts, short dresses or skirts and no flip flops. If they wear flip flops they won't be allowed out at recess. Unfortunately, their definition of flip flops is any sandal that doesn't have a back strap. I don't think my kids have any sandals (except dressy ones) that have a back strap. I also had to laugh at the dress code memo regarding the wearing of shorts. The kids are allowed to wear shorts as long as they are bermuda shorts. Ha ha ha! Where can you get bermuda shorts these days. We live in Long Island and the kids go to school in unairconditioned buildings through the end of June. These poor kids come home sweating every day.

Our school sends people to the office and makes them put on something from a bag of donated clothes...usually really ugly or the wrong size. I suppose that would keep someone from repeatedly breaking the dress code rules since kids are so worried about their appearances :hyper:

Our kids can wear tank tops as long as they don't have spaghetti straps.

That is unbelievable!! I can see not wanting kids to wear short-shorts, where their rear ends are showing, but to ban shorts altogether? It is way too hot in the summer to have to wear jeans. Poor kids!!

I graduated from high school last year. When I was in 9th grade, no dress code was enforced at all. It wasn't necessary to have one, no one wore anything "trashy." The following year the trashiest girls came up from the middle school. It was terrible. For my next three years of high school a dress code was semi-enforced, but only when it came to wearing revealing clothing. They didn't care if we wore pjs and whatnot.

we got a letter home from school -- the 8th grade dinner dance is right after graduation, the kids will be taking a bus from the school to the party. there's a dress code for the event -- no evening gowns, nothing strapless.

my daughter told me she intends to violate the dress code and wear something strapless.

Actually in most schools the dress code for the students doesn't apply to the teachers. The high school I sub at requires school polos for the students but the teachers are only required to wear professional appearing attire. Normally I wear slacks and a polo because it is easy and convenient but I could waer anything I want to as long as it looks professional and who is to define professional. I do on occasion wear a tank top covered by a light cotton shirt and matching pants. This is Florida and it is getting warm and humid.

Yes they do enforce the dress code. But MY dress code is a bit stricter then the schools I am sure.

The middle school is in the beginning stages of going to uniforms. We will know for sure next year what this will entail but I am all for it.
