We are planning a trip to WDW in October as our kids have the Friday before and the Monday of Columbus day off from school and they will miss less classes this way. We were worried that it may be a busy weekend in the parks being a long weekend, but I have checked several web sites of Fl. school districts and it looks like they do not have time off around this holiday.

Does anyone know if this it accurate...
Has anyone any experience with Columbus day and the following week in the park?

thanks
denise

We were there over Columbus Day weekend in 2001.
This was right after Sept. 11, so I dont know how that week compares to "normal" Columbus Day weekends.
The only bad day was the Saturday of the holiday weekend. MK was very busy that day. I am not sure if it was due to the holiday or the fact that it was the only night MK was having Spectomagic and fireworks that whole week.
The rest of the week though was fine, hardly any lines for rides.

Here in Illinois, the kids get Monday off for Columbus Day.

My kids do not get Columbus Day off. We planned our trip for Oct 4-11th with FTP. My brother gets 6th off of work for Yom Kippur which means he has to take one less vacation day. I kind of wish we had decided on later in October (my girls have 2 days off which I found out after we booked dates). OH well.... if they don't get work done week we're back they can do it those 2 days off of school!

I too am wondering if that weekend at end of our stay will be a bit busier though with Columbus Day. I think I read most Alabama schools have a break then.

Here in MA it is a holiday, in fact we are going that week and I am also worried about the crowds. But I'm thinking of the same thing, it is one less day that my kids will miss of school.

Oregon is funky.....the kids do not get Columbus Day off. However the second Friday in October is a "non-contract" day for teacher's so all the schools are closed. Me thinks Oregon is such a liberal state that they don't want to recognize Columbus Day as a legal holiday, and yet there is almost always a 3 day weekend right around Columbus Day. Hmmmm

Our small suburban district has Columbus day off. We were there that week in 1998 and were at AK Columbus Day. It was quite crowded, but AK was still a new park so that may have been a factor. I don't think the rest of the week was bad.

My kids are not off for Columbus Day (however, I am as I work for the Parish Government). My DD and I will be trick or treating with the Mouse that week though!!! We'll be there Oct 13-18 - Can't wait!!!

Our school district in Western NY has Columbus Day off.

Our kids schools will be closed 1/2 day on Thursday, 10/9 and all day 10/10 for conferences. Monday is Columbus day 10/13 and they are closed as well. We had originally planned our trip for the entire week as to limit the number of days off of school. But something came up the weekend of Columbus Day. So, we will be there 10/4-10/9.

Our school district (in SW PA very near the WV border) does not have any days off for Columbus Day.

My office (in D.C.) is closed on the 13th as a Federal Holiday, and my older son (who attends school in New Hampshire) has the day off as well. My DW who teaches in Montgomery County, MD (a very liberal state) does not have off on the 13th. She does have off on the 6th (Yom Kippur) and on the 17th (teacher's union conference), but they won't recognize Columbus Day anymore for PC reasons.

When we lived in CT (10 yrs ago) it seemed all the New England states had Columbus day off. Not sure if it's still that way.
Here in OH, we have the Friday before Columbus day weekend off as a "teacher in-service day".

This will be our 4th year going at that time....
Yes it is more crowded that weekend than other times that month.
That is why we decided on the week before (Oct 4-11) instead of the week of (Oct 11-18)
We arrive early on Sat Oct 4th, so will have lots of time to enjoy one of the parks and hit the fireworks and parade at MK (if it works out that they only show them on Sat.)
And we are also going to MNSSHP on Sunday the 5th. Last year we went on the Friday of Columbus weekend and it was VERY CROWDED. We did not expect it to be that bad!

It looks as thought that will be a 4 day weekend for my son's school as well-- He'll have off Friday & Monday.

In case you're interested, most of the schools in the Orlando area do NOT have Columbus day off. Instead they have the Thursday & Friday of that week off (16th & 17th), although I'm not sure why.

Another non-interesting fact to note is that Columbus day falls on my birthday this year! And what better way to celebrate than having the mickey (no pun intended) taken out of me at the Whispering Canyon Cafe, which is where my better half is insisting on dragging me that evening!

How interesting...I just assumed that this was a National holiday and everyone was off...it may be busier, but I assume it will not be as busy as Feb and April breaks from school...
