does your fingernail color have to match your toenail color?

Ok, I need to know fingernail polish etiquette! Here are my questions:

1. Is it necessary for fingernails to match toenails? I just painted my toes a bright, hot pink but don't really feel comfortable painting my fingernails that shade. I just don't want it to look weird if they don't match.

2. If the answer to #1 is no, then does the fingernail color need to be somehow related to the toes? Like maybe a lighter shade or doesn't it matter?

3. Can you have toenails painted but not fingernails?

4. Does your fingernail/toenail polish have to match your clothing/shoes? I just realized that I have black flip flops with a red band (the part that goes over the top of the foot) which I wear a lot and that might clash with my newly painted toes!

I love my toenails painted but do not like my fingernails painted. With that said, you can go crazy on the toes, but more subdued on the fingers.

I think it's a classier look.

Or, if you want to match, a light pink french manicure for both!

I always paint my toenails but only finger nails when Im really dressed up as long as the colors don't clash horribly I thing 2 dif colors may be ok as far as matching your outfit I think it looks best to either match or go way off with a contrasting color like don't wear peach and pink or lime and green make sure there as close as possible or really contrasting. and never wear a red outfit with pink lipstick! it's borderline as bad as socks with sandals

I don't like colors on my fingernails. I always use clear or once in a blue moon I will have a french manicure professionally done.


I however love my toenails painted. I either have them painted or I do a french manicure on them.

So no they don't have to match, or at least mine don't

I would say only if you are getting really dressed up formal or going to a job interview, etc.....other than that - go crazy!!!!!!

no they don't have to match..however I personally like the toenail colour to somewhat go with the shoes...but that's a personal thing (and an excuse to either buy more shoes or polish)

I think they should match, unless it's a pretty bright or outrageous color... then it might look strange. I think bright toes look good with sheer or light colored fingernails in the same color family.

In the summer, my toes are always painted, but my fingernails never are.

I only like French manicures but I am not a fan of French pedicures. So, in my book, NO they don't have to match.

I got a pedi & mani on Monday & did red on my toes. I'd never feel comfortable w/ red fingernails. So, I did my typical French manicure. Looks fine!

It's a must for my toes to be painted in the summer even if my nails are not. If I do paint both, then I like them to match unless I have a french manicure.

Same here... Right now my toes are painted pink and my fingers are bare.

They don't have to match exactly, but I do think they should "blend". Like if my toes were a bright pink, maybe a paler pink on my fingers, or a French manicure because that sort of goes with everything.

I wouldn't have pink on my toes and dark brown on my fingers.
