Does your dog wear a sweater?

I was scolded by the head of a local rescue group for putting sweaters on my mini dachshunds. She said to never put a sweater on a dog because it interfers with their ability to regulate their body temperature.

I have a Maltese mix (see avatar) and she has very fine, thin hair. She loves to wear her clothes and stands up on her hind legs to get dressed. When the temps are real cold she sleeps in 4-legged pajamas and loves it. Most of the time she has a t-shirt on and gets lots of compliments when she's out walking. If it's raining she has a rain coat she wears so she won't get soaked. If she does get wet she shakes so hard its pitiful.

We have a sweater for our cocker spaniel. She has skin allergies, so her hair is kept relatively short (on the vet's recommendation - he jokingly says, "She's allergic to herself."). She also will be 16 on March 7; he says she feels the cold more now that she's old. We noticed her shivering in the house sometimes, and since we can't keep it 90 degrees in here, we bought the sweater.

You aren't an evil dog owner. However, your mother may be concerned since she has a Boston Terrier. This breed has very thin coats and the cold can affect them. You have hairy dogs. Ask yourself if your dogs are shivering and trembling when they go out. If they aren't, don't worry about it--they are warm enough. I honestly do not like clothes on a dog--bandannas can be cute however. I have several jackets that my current dog inherited from my two previous dogs. She hates them and I will only put one on if it is bitter cold. She is a Scottie and I will say she would really look cute in a red tartan plaid jacket, but it is a no-go. When one of my previous dogs was ill, she required monthly ultrasounds and was shaved. She would shake in the cold and I did put jackets on her for her comfort. She even had a little poncho that she wore in the house on really cold days. Of course you know you are obligated now to post a photo of the lovely shih tzus.

I never post pictures....so I hope this comes out right. Here are my poor babies...without coats. Ginger is actually a mix...we're guessing it's part Llasa Apso (sp? ) her papers say she's a shih tzu but she's clearly not. We love her anyway and we bought her for a pet not a showdog.It's just easier to say shih tzu. Scout is the boy and he has a regular puppy cut....can't keep up with the shih tzu fur. Thanks for telling me about your Boston.....I did think my Mom was being kinda weird about he always being covered up but maybe it's a breed thing. Thanks
