Does your child use Ticket to Read?

My DD (6) loves this program. She is in K, and her school provided usernames and passwords for all the kids, which is great, but they did it by grade level and not reading ability...which is dumb. I tried talking to them, but they won't budge.

I was going to go ahead and pay for a subscription myself so she can play it over the summer. I am also looking for a similar program, but for math. Does anyone know of anythng out there like that? Thanks!

DD did it in 1st grade last year and we really enjoyed it.

This year she's in a new school and they don't do it. Also DS is in 1st this year (at new school) and they aren't doing it either.

Miss it, but they still love to read otherwise and we try to find free sites for that kind of stuff.

Our DD did it at school this year and could do it as part of their nightly reading. Got the flyer in her backpack last night encouraging them to do it over the summer, but I got a quick "NO".

She doesn't like to read, so I'm not sure what to do. She needs to read to improve her skills since she still stumbles on certain easy words.

I thought of doing a reward chart or something for each week of the summer - any ideas????

Check out www.iknowthat.com - it has games covering a bunch of different subjects (incl. math) from pre-k to 6th grade. You can play for free, or subscribe for a few bucks a month and get no ads + additional games.

My DS loves this site - and we just became subscribers so he can play over the summer and not have the ads, etc.

our local library has a link to Tumblebooks, which is an online reading program. they have books for different reading levels, and it's free through the library. I like it because my sons can read the books themselves, and if they have trouble with a word, they just click on it and the sound will come on to sound out the word for them. i think a lot of libraries have the tumblebooks link, so check with your local one to find out if they have this service or something similar available for free.

we also use the starfall website, which is free, and it has a lot of different types of activities. our school used this one in the classroom as well.

My DD is going into the 2nd grade. She does not like to read either. Our school has a program called Accelerated Reader. The kids takes tests on the books to get points. For a certain number of points (based on difficulty of book), the kids get awards, anything from little erasers to free books and skate parties. She loved doing the AR program, so this summer we made up one for her. For every two CHAPTER books (early chapter books) she reads and answer our questions on correctly, she gets an award. 2 - stays up late, 4 - trip to ice cream store, 6 - gets to eat snacks for a meal, 8 - $10 toy, 10 - a DS game, 12 - special day with daddy, 14 - small water park, 16 - spa day, 18 - large water park, and 20 - slumber party. These were things she thought of and we helped her put them in "value" order. She is excited about it and we told her she could start reading the books, but she had to wait for the award.

some local libraries have summer reading book clubs that will give rewards after reading a certain number of books, too. ours has gift certificates for ice cream and pizza, plus they have a storytime/craft-time once a week for pre-k through 3rd graders to encourage reading. your local library could be a good resource for you.
