Does US have/Does Canada have...?

I think the cut off is August here (maybe Sept?). If you turn 5 years old before the end of August, you're allowed to start that year, but if not, you wait till the following year.

Edit: OH, I don't think it's mandatory to send you're children to school at that age. I did hear at one time what the age where they mandate the child be enrolled in some form of education (home school is an option too) but I can't remember exactly what that age was. I'm thinking 7, but that might not be accurate. It might have changed in the last 7 years since my kids were that age too.

In Ontario, they have pre-kindergarten (half-days) that starts at age 4. That's optional but kindergarten is mandatory. I don't think homeschooling is as popular in Canada as it is in the US.

Is there ski-doos in the US?

Here in Alberta it is like this: "Honey, lets barbeque tonight. Go fire up the bbq. Be sure to clean the grill off first, before you throw that good Alberta beef on it." :teeth:

There is your problem, you can't clean off the grill! :teeth:

I've seen a few BBQ competitions on the Food Network. You are right - they take it VERY seriously.

What's the average school year in the US? Here it usually runs from the last week of August to mid-June.

The school year is about the same in our district, though we're normally out the 1st week of June. It depends a lot of the snow days though. I think all students in the US must attend school for 180 days. I believe this is Federal law.

I know some schools have really changed schedules and are giving the kids longer winter breaks and making them go some during the summer months. I forget what they call that. I'm sure someone will know though.

I agree, it is good to move on. I actually went to bed that night crying! I said to my hubby "they all hate me, I can never dis again!" I took it slow for a few days, only read, didn't post. And decided not to get into any more debates! I will only stay post on the friendly, fluffy boards now-avoiding all arguements! Last time I was to emotionally wrecked when the board was finally locked down!
I am happy to be back, I missed it!

I am a Republican, and I was vocal about voting for Bush, so I had to duck often! :duck:

Oh my! You'll drive yourself crazy if you take things to personally that are said on the internet. The DIS is a friendly place but people are very passionate about certain topics like religion, politics, abortion, right-to-life, right-to-die, etc... Avoid those hot-topic heated threads and you'll be fine.

Talking about computers and the internet, do most Americans have a computer at home? How many computers per home? Do most kids have tv's in their bedrooms? What kind of internet service do you use? Is DSL/cable available everywhere in the US?

FYI cutoff here is you must be 5 by July 31st to go to Kindergarten.

Maybe that's changed since my kids were that age too (they're 13 &14). My son's boy was born in August and he was allowed to start school that 1st year. He's now 15 I think. My kids had to wait the extra year (born in Nov & Dec).

We held my son back the 1st year of kindergarten (he just wasn't ready to go on and I've never regretted that decision, but now both of mine are in the same grade). Anyway, my son is 14 and is going into 8th grade and my friend's boy is a year older at 15 and he'll be a junior (11th grade if it's not the same in Canada) this year. It just seems ODD.

Talking about computers and the internet, do most Americans have a computer at home? Almost all my friends do

How many computers per home? Usually 1-2

Do most kids have tv's in their bedrooms?I'd say 1/2
What kind of internet service do you use? DSL

Is DSL/cable available everywhere in the US? I believe

I'm not sure what a ski-doo is? It sounds like our Sea Doos? A jet ski for on the water, but yours is for snow? We do have snowmobiles though.

I could be WAY off here? :teeth:

You can get one of those wire type brushes. They work good enough for me.

BTW, do most Canadians use charcoal or gas for their grilling? Personally, I use gas (it's quicker). I prefer charcoal for burgers and hot dogs and gas for steaks and chicken though. I'd say here people use them both equally as much as the other.

I live in Hicksville USA and we finally got cable a year ago. I'd say there are probably small regions that don't have cable yet, but for the most part, I'd say it's pretty standard about everywhere. We had DSL before cable (though I never subscibed) in my town. It was via Verizon, so it's probably in most of those areas that don't have cable yet.

I forgot they are called snowmobiles! I'm so used to just saying a ski-doo.

I think most canadians use gas for BBQing just because it's easier and there's less mess.

Do most americans have basements?

I don't know. I do know it depends on where you live. In my state, we're surrounded by mountains and we are well above sea level, so most in my state do. In Florida however, there is no way you could have a basement there, unless of course you wanted a pool in your basement. LOL Some also have a crawl space, but not a full basement. I think that has to do with what their altitude is too.

I don't think much of the US gets the kind of snow you do, so they're not really as popular here as I'd imagine they would be if it snowed a lot. I'm sure many in New England have them sitting in their garages though.

snowmobiles--not in the garages here in New Hampshire. Snowmobile clubs, too. very active. Ice fishing, snowshoeing, dog sled races--although dog sledding not as popular as in the past. No cable here in Washington, NH.

Is there lots of interest in 'traditional' crafts in Canada? for instance weaving on looms, spinning, cabinetry, blacksmithing?
Is military service mandatory? or registration for military service? are there women in the Canadian armed services?

Jean

A few that have gone unanswered:

Yes, Canada has a stock exchange -- the TSE
Yes, Canada has Lindt chocolate
Yes, Canada has electric staplers

No, military service or registration is not manatory but yes there are women in the armed forces.

Kindergarten is only mandatory in Canada in Laborador, Newfoundland, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. Grade 1 is manadatory country-wide although most children start school in kindergarten.

Kindergarten is called Primary in Nova Scotia and I'm pretty sure it's optional. I think we're the only folks who call it that, which is a bummer if you want to find books about starting school because they all say Kindergarten. We say Grade 1, Grade 2, etc all the way up to Grade 12. In Nova Scotia, we have elementary school to grade 6, junior high to grade 9 and three years of high school.
