while vacationing last week in the world, i was witness to something i have never seen before....being a somewhat "germ-phobe" even i was kind of taken aback by this....in chef mickeys, i saw a father wiping every characters nose off with a clorox wipe before his son ( 3 or 4 y.o.) would hug & kiss them.....this was a 1st for me...i dunno, is this sort of thing normal? does everyone do this? i can only imagine what the character person inside was thinking!

Maybe the child had an illness that affects his/her immunity system. I had a friend whose daughter had this problem and she would get a cold or fever and have to go straight to the doctor.

Yeah, but the germs are all over the place, not just on characters' noses... Maybe he thought the characters were really breathing out their noses?

hysterically i have a friend who i am sure would do the same IF he would let the kids touch the "filthy dirty characters"

maybe all the characters had "colds"? poor characters...he could have been wiping their eye holes so they couldn't see, then they would have touched someone in the wrong place and got in big trouble for it...


seems like if the kid had immune problems he'd have a mask on since so much is air born.

hate to see poor pop in the restroom probably has his own "cleaning kit" just for such occasions and hope he wasn't staying in one of the resorts since we all know about all the nasties lurking on the linens ect

I guess I'm the odd man out here............ I don't find it strange at all. Maybe he was concerned that other kids, who may have colds, etc.... may have kissed the noses, and didn't want his child kissing it too........... it makes sense to me to wipe it off. My DS would't kiss thier noses regardless, but I can see why someone would wipe it off........... OK, call me....... HAHA, Goofy!!!!! but I wouldn't have thought it was wierd.

I am dying thinking of that.

My DS has a weak immune system. When his Dr.s and I talk about us visiting WDW, we know what we are possibly exposing him too. I mean on property there are what 30,000 rooms right? I have no idea what that translates to in amount of persons but obviously DS is going to be exposed to germs no matter what we do. And believe me I do as much possible but that seems a little extreme even to me.

I find it rude to the character. What if the CM had an allergy to the chemicals? If seems that the dad is treating the character as an inanimate object rather than a real person. If you wouldn't do it to a CM's own face than why do it to a character's?

well, I don't want this to turn into an "issue" but, a real CM wouldn't be getting kissed on the nose by my child.......... and I'd assume anyone else's child. I just don't find it odd, that's all. It doesn't seem rude to me at all. I can see the "fathers" side of it. To each his own............ but, like another person said, some kids get sick really easily, and why should they not be allowed to express thier love for mickey, by kissing his nose......... I say wipe away if you feel you have too, that's all.

OT but somewhat related: Who wipes the grocery cart handles down before using them? Have a friend who does this.

Now I can see doing it if there was a baby who was teething, I would do it then. But she still does even though her kids' are older and just touching the cart. She just a clean freak, has a bottle of lysol in her purse, along with Purex. Ironic thing is , since her kids' have started school, they've been constantly sick. There's something to be said for exposing them to everyday germs, it builds up their immunity.

Otherwise, I doubt their handlers saw this happening - I can't imagine Disney letting someone rub chemicals on a costume that probably cost a few thousand dollars just because they're a germaphobe. Not to mention someone in costume could have a serious reaction to the bleach.

I find it odd too

I mean I completely understand if it's because the child has health problems but if that's the case then they should be just as concerned about all the airborne stuff. Plus, don't ya think that perhaps a nice big hug or a "high 5" would be a good idea in that case - maybe reserve a special kiss for his favorite character

What I am most bothered by is whether or not the father ASKED the characters if he could wipe/disinfect their noses before he did it????????? I would think that could be an issue - if he was doing it without their permission...

Does this father also wipe off the hand of every person they meet before shaking hands? Way over the top! I'm all for being sanitary and washing hands and such but this action borders on ridiculous.

I think if you're that worried about germs, you shouldn't let your kid kiss the character.

I don't think I've ever *kissed* a character to begin with... so why not just let the kid hug him/her... or shake hands... or don't let them near the character. Especially considering that cleaning just the nose isn't doing much to help.
