Does this bother anyone else

Doesn't bother me. Sometimes posters are just bullies, for lack of a better word. They seem to thrive on conflict, and go out of their way to antagonize. Why should the OP have to deal with that?

I don't blame an OP for asking for a nasty thread to be closed at all. Sure they can walk away but who can resist the temptation of checking back to see what people are saying? It's still up to the mods, they don't have to close a thread just because someone asks.

Far more annoying to me is a thread being deleted. That just seems odd.

Doesn't bother me. The way people love to attack others on this board, I think there should be a way to delete a thread without a mod. if you started it.

I agree with those who say there's way too much mean-spiritedness and it's no wonder some people don't want to continue being attacked over and over. I've seen a few folks who seem to purposely take a sentence or two out of context to get the meaning they want and continue to beat that dead horse even when it's pointed out that they're wrong.

C. Ann hit the nail on the head.

I agree!

No - it doesn't bother me.. And I could see why someone might request that it be closed.. Not because people are disagreeing - not because they aren't receiving the responses that they want - but because there are a small number of people who get downright ugly, mean, and nasty - push it as far as they possibly can without getting banned - and by no means is it just presenting an opposing opinion.. It's meant to be humiliating, degrading, and just plain mean-spirited - having nothing at all to do with the original question posed by the OP..

If there's a particular thread you are talking about, I don't know which one it is, so I don't know exactly what happened in that case.. But in the years I have been here, I have seen some brutal attacks on posters - for no other reason than to humiliate and/or degrade someone..

Just my opinion..:)

I agree. Most all of those hateful, mean spirited posters would never, ever have the guts to say those things in that manner to their face. It's the fact that they can do so anonymously that gives them the nerve to attack others the way they do.

It's one thing to disagree with someone. It's another to degrade them and make them feel small.

I get irked by it. Kinda like, I'm taking my toys and going home type of deal. If they don't like the way it is going, or feel like they are getting beat up, then leave the thread and unsubscribe to it.

My feelings exactly. And I know a lot of people think these boards can be tough, but I've been on some that are worse. (a baseball card collecting board was the worse--those guys were brutal!) I got attacked once many years ago on a thread I started here--and I just unscribed, walked away, and the fun ended without me.

It bothers me a little, but I understand why they did it. There are some people here who seem to really be judgmental of somebody if their lives are not at all similar to their own. It's not enough just to walk away sometimes when people keep posting on it and judging/haranguing the OP. There's one thread I saw where it went on for pages and pages even after the OP walked away. Who would want to see that cropping up about them day after day? I imagine it would get discouraging.

Does it bother me? No. But I do think it's cowardly. If you're not getting the answers you want, maybe you should take a look at yourself.

When A OP ask for there thread to be closed? I guess I just don't understand why the took the time to post and then other people took the time to post. Then just to have it closed seem like a waste of time for all involved
Will you be my new best friend? I thought about starting a similar thread!

It's one thing to request a thread be closed when it really goes off on a tangent, or becomes genuinely offensive (but, heck, the Moderators/Webmasters are on top of that anyway ;)).

But just because you don't like the responses? Nuh-uh.

eta: Okay, after reading all the responses and doing some thinking, I realize... it irks me when this happens before I'm aware of a thread and have had a chance to provide my own opinion :teeth:

:lmao:

I know, right???

I'll see a lock on a thread and I'll think to myself, "Don't read it... don't read it... I know I'll just want to put in my 2 cents, but won't be able to." :teeth:

Oh, heck, even better - I read one recently and saw a post that would have led the thread astray anyway... so I sent a PM to that poster, asking if they were up for a friendly debate, and presented my side of the issue.

I got a response to the effect that I must be one of the ___s to which that poster was referring, they were NOT interested in my point of view, and there was no further need to contact them.

Maybe they felt like a one-on-one was too confrontational. :confused3 I don't know. I think I might prefer a more personal discussion of differing opinions. I think it would be more respectful than the group discussion can get.

Are you kidding? I see the lock and think "oooohhh! Juicy thread! and read it all." In fact, I have to go find this thead you're talking about.

I seldom get irritated by a message board...I'd rather laugh at stuff.

Actually, I find it more annoying when threads go *poof*. There was one last week that I was reading through and went to reply to, I can't even remember what it was about. I wrote out my reply and hit submit, and then it told me i had specified an invalid thread. While I was writing out my response they poofed it. I never even did figure out why because at the time it was a very civil thread. Perhaps they were worried the topic would head into dangerous waters. I don't know.

The only time it ever bothered me is when box of rains threads went poof. I was really following that thread alot. Not sure if it was she or the mods that poofed it but I felt like I didn't get to see the end of a movie or something.

I don't enjoy fighting with people so I just usually post what I think and then move on. I don't have to keep nitpicking at the OP of a thread or anyone else on the thread

Nope.

What irks me is when OPs attempt to tell people what they can and can't say. "If you don't xxx, then I'm going to have the thread closed."

I once said they could close it if they wanted and I'd open up another one to discuss the subject.

If you want your thread closed because you asked for opinions and didn't like the ones you got, fine. But don't sit there and tell people what their opinions must be with the big threat of closing it, KWIM?

The recent "Does your 12 year old have temper tantrums, too?" thread being closed didn't bug me a bit.
