I am a southern girl, born in Texas and I grew up in Texas, Alabama & Georgia. When I was young St. Nick never visited our house. I married a northerner, he was born and raised right here in Wisconsin. When DS was a baby I did not know I needed to put up a stocking for St. Nick to fill!!! Fortunately, DH was on top of things and we have been putting up stockings for St. Nick to fill for 23 years now!!!

So my question is: Where do you live and does St. Nick visit your house?:santa:

In the Ohio valley area....I didn't have St Nick come while growing up but since I have been dating DH, St Nick has come every year. St Nick didn't come for DH growing up either.

Grew up in Indiana and Santa always visited. Still does and always will. :)

St Nick visits every year here in SE Pa.. but doesn't fill a stocking tonight he fills a pair of shoes with candy.

I was born and raised in Iowa and Santa Claus (we never called him St. Nick) always came and we always put stockings up. Same for my dh.

St Nicholas and Santa Claus have always been interchangeable to me.

I used to get a little something in my stocking on Little Christmas when I was a kid.

I need clarification. Are you saying you never had visits by Santa as a kid or are you saying St Nick is different person altogether?

Me and DH grew up in WI. St Nick didn't visit either one of us, but he did visit the vast majority of our classmates. He doesn't come for DS.

When I taught "Christmas Around the World" I learned that St Nick comes Dec 6 - and in Holland leaves candy in your shoes...

Santa Clause comes Christmas Eve... and leaves presents, and candy in stockings

When I mentioned that St Nick may come this year - I had to Wiki it to make sure I had the right Night!!

That is when I learned that St Nick is a canonized Saint by the Pope - popular in Europe.... and then Martin Luther getting away from the papacy moved the celebration over to Christ Child and Christmas Eve (and in Chicago we have the Chriskrindle market that harkens to the German tradition )

So we'll celebrate both!!

:)

Sandy-- that is why we leave candy in the shoes tonight.. DS wakes up to it tomorrow moring... When he was in Catholic school they did it during the days for the kids.. now he is in public and assumes the tradition will cont. at home since St. Nick knows he is no longer at the school....ha ha ha... okay not a problem I can do that..
Christmas though the stocking is filled with items..:thumbsup2

I believe the OP is talking about the St. Nick that comes tonight, not Santa Claus.

Born, raised and still live in WI. Saint Nick never came to my or my DH house growing up. St. Nick does not come for our now 6 year old either. I think it's more a family tradition thing than a regional thing.

I had no idea St. Nick was different from Santa Claus.

Can you believe I've never heard of this? I knew that St. Nick would come and leave candy in shoes, but I thought it was the same as the stocking thing on Christmas Eve, not something completely different. :confused3

Any excuse to get more Christmas candy is good to me.

ETA: I was raised for 8 years in North Texas, then lived the next 6 years in Eastern Colorado, and now I live in Central Florida. Never thought St. Nick was any different from Santa Claus.

Just to clear things up a bit, St. Nick & Santa are 2 different people! St. Nick visits the night of December 5th and leaves candy or small gifts in your stocking. Santa Clause is the guy that comes on December 24th!!!

By the way we never had Santa when we were growing up either, but that is a entirely different story. I had a great childhood though!

I stopped at the Dollar store and picked up some novelty candy items for DD shoe -

Stockings, I do wrap up some silly things, cosmetic things for the girls (chapstick is a good one, as is the toothbrushes ) some things get wrapped, some dont... and candy and special fruits are also able to find their way into larger stockings (like a pomegranite, or star fruit, kiwi... things we dont buy as often as the kids like!!)

Love traditions!!

I was surprised to learn from DS girlfriend - they celebrate Father New Year!! They have a decorated tree, and presents they give on New Year (they stay up thru the eve to the new year!! Her family is originally from Russia, and Jewish... and I think she said they also do stockings, but not like we do stockings!! Oddly enough other DS his girlfriend Catholic, her mom solid Catholic - and they never did Stockings - she was thrilled Santa left her a stocking here her first year dating DS!!)

ETA - computer went down I was responding to melisazack

Gottu luv the Dis learn something new all the time!!

I was born a NEer and Santa always visited our home. St. Nick never came to visit. I need to tell DH this one. No need to not get more things in December! ;)

St. Nick comes to our house. Around here, this tradition is big with Catholic families - less dependent on region than religion.

I grew up in st. louis (well, till I was 8) and st. nick always came. he's been coming to my kids, too (fills shoes with candy and a small toy) but now that my eldest is in kindergarten, not sure what to do. no one around us celebrates, so not sure if I should stop it (he's more likely to notice and ask questions and such)
