Does root canal always lead to crown?

I have never heard of the type of diagnosis you described there. A root canal is needed when there is extensive decay in a tooth, when there is nerve damage from trauma, when there is an abscess, or if a tooth breaks and there is not enough tooth structure left to restore it with out a post and core build up and crown. There are cases where a tooth that appears healthy develops a problem and a root canal is needed to relieve the pain.
Was your husband in any kind of pain?

A tooth that has had a root canal becomes more brittle and can fracture easier than a tooth without. The size of the hole to make access for nerve removal is always about the same and does not determine if a crown is needed. If the tooth is broken, or decayed with little sound tooth structure left, or already has a large filling it definitely will need a crown. If all you have is the access hole, the tooth would probably be okay without a crown for a while, but would have the potential for fracture. Some dentists routinely suggest crowns on all teeth with root canals.

Internal resorption of a tooth is when the nerve is basically attacking the inside of the tooth and wearing it away. If you do a google search there's a lot out there about it. I'm not really worried about the diagnosis....I totally trust the dentist and I've seen the x-rays. Definitely something going on there.

No pain involved at all. That's a good thing!! Monday is his root canal so I'm sure he'll be in pain after that!

I have had many root canals and I was never in any pain at all after them or during them. Before them, thats another story but once they started the root canals and after each one there was never any pain.

Seriously? Even after the novacaine wore off? I've had only one, and it was a walk in the park to actually HAVE it! I could have SLEPT throught he thing if I didn't have to keep my mouth open! :) But I was a bit uncomfortable later that evening. Nothing major....Motrin helped....but I can't say I didn't have ANY pain.

Hmmmmm....

I think it depends on your tolerance too. I had a c-section and so did my neighbor, she was on the couch for a month after it and I was out shopping in the mall the day after I got home form the hospital so everyone is different pain wise! I am not a big medication person so I don't even take aspirin or motrin or anything unless I am in unbearable pain so I didn't take it after my c-section either.

Ditto here! I've had 3 root canals and crowns. The tooth pain leading up to them was worse than delivering a child for me! Also I waited so long to get one of the crowns done that the tooth did break. Fortunately the break wasn't so bad that I couldn't get a crown on it. Lesson learned for sure. No more waiting to get crowns. Each root canal/crown I've gotten have cost me $1800 out of pocket (no major dental insurance coverage). :headache:

I have had root canals with no crown.
Sorry to say I think I have an opposite situation. I have a crowned tooth that seems to need a root canal. :guilty:
I am wondering if they just drill through the crown, or remove it? Seems like drilling through it would crack it too. :confused3
sigh........
When in doubt have the root canal before a crown. (My crown was put on years ago,)
Having root canals never have bothered me. I always say the most painful part is the cost. ;)

Hi Karen! :yay: I had a root canal about 6 years ago, and the dentist told me it would be best to come back and have a crown put on it within the year because I would have problems with it again! Well, like I said, it's been 6 years (almost 7 actually) and I have not had a problem with it since! I am glad I didn't spend the money to have a crown put on back then!
