Does it really "feel like" 110 degrees?

I went to WDW in June 2004 and I learned one thing:

During summers in FL, people stay inside enjoying the AC and go outside as little as possible. Just like in New England in winter when we stay inside enjoying the heat and go outside as little as possible.

I personally do not plan on going to Florida in summer again.

Think of the worst heatwave you have ever experienced and imagine it lasting all summer!

This isn't said to scare you, OP .... just to know so you can be prepared. As others have said, it is doable, but you will get about 1/2 as much done as you plan to between of the heat and crowds. The weather saps a lot of energy out of you. I read warnings before my trip and thought "it can't be THAT bad" .... but I was SOOO wrong.

I live here...and yes it feels hot. I was at Downtown Disney around 4pm and it was pretty uncomfortable.

Well I know I'm just weird, but for some reason I kind of like the heat!

I guess it reminds me of all the summer trips when I was growing or something.

Anyway..having said that, we usually stay away from WDW July-Aug., but we will be going in a few weeks for a long weekend for the Pirates opening! pirate:

What we have learned that keeps us all happy is to make sure we do not spend too many hours in the parks! It's sooo tempting, but everytime we have ever stayed longer than our comfort threshold it always ends in disaster! :furious:

We usually get to a park at opening, stay until about 12:30pm. Sometimes I'll make an ADR to eat in the park before we leave, but then it's back to the resort for the afternoon!

We spend the rest of the day by the pool, and it ALWAYS helps if we can take a nap for at least an hour or two.

Really even just taking a shower helps tremendously!

We then go back to a park around 7:00pm. If it's an EMH, like MK staying open until 2:00am :woohoo: , we go back even later..like 9:00pm or so.

The next day, we just sleep in and spend the day by the pool, then go to the park at night.

Yes, it's hot, but if you have a plan I don't think it would stop you from having a great time!

But don't ya'll think the heat is a worse earlier this year. Here in TN we are having July and August heat already. I'm hoping the temps go down a little bit soon.

We're going in August for the third time. It is really, really hot then but as OPs have said.... I'd rather be hot at WDW than hot in TN!!!!!! :cool1:

I'm a little scared now as well! We are not used to that type of heat but our time frame didn't allow us to go any other time. We will be there for two weeks in August so hopefully that will be enough time to go slow! I just hope there is a little cooling down in the evenings.

Living in inland Southern California we have our summer heat between 95 and 110, but it's a DRY heat a majority of the time. The humidity will be kicking our butts, no doubt. Thanks to those of you with the helpful hints on how not to lose our minds. I, for one, am still very excited about our first ever trip to the World (July 6-16)! Glad we extended out stay three extra days; being that it looks like we'll be pooped out quite a bit. :p

Yes, it feels like 110, but I'd rather walk around WDW in shorts and a tee with a heat index of 110 :sunny: , then walk through downtown Chicago in my business attire, through clouds of bus exhaust in similar heat. :confused3

It just dependa on where you are from and what you are used to (regardless of how far north or south you are). If you live in an area that experiences this from time to time, maybe it's just not as surprising.

Interesting fact: City in the U.S. with the greatest temperature range? Fairbanks, Alaska (at least according to their city museum which I visited in 2002).

How are the MistyMates different from the usual mister fans from WDW and other sources? What makes them worth the extra price?

I'd LOVE to find something to help keep us cool in August, especially our DGD's stroller.
Well, when you use the misting fans that are sold at the parks, they are bulky, about 8" x 5 "; they require a battery to operate the fan; you have to continually depress the pump in order to get water/mist; the water that comes out is not so much of a mist, but a spray of water.

With the Misty Mate, you fill it with water, screw on the top tightly, pump out the air and turn the little knob on or off to get a continuous flow of mist. There is a little clip that you can clip to your shirt to continuously mist your face, or you can clip it down on your shorts to mist your legs.

You can just turn the mister on and mist your face/body for ten seconds and then turn it off. It is not a spray of water, it is a super fine mist that feels refreshing, not like when you spray your face with the fan, where you have to close your eyes and you have to worry about ruining your make-up.

The 10 oz. unit that we have is about 6" x 3" in diameter, it's cylindrical and easy to tote around. We clip ours to our fanny pack wasteband.

I have purchased my Misty Mates from Ebay because purchasing them from the manufacturer is more than double the price. BTW, the manufacturer sells their product on ebay, also.

Just my opinion. I love that little invention so much I just have to share my joy :grouphug:

Oh, also, Misty Mate, with the publics help, sends their products over to the soldiers in the deserts of the Middle East. Heat stroke is a problem over there, and the Misty Mates help cool your body down by 30 degrees.
If you would like to read more about them, go to MistyMate.com

we're back...thanks for the tips. I actually only got to read the first few pages the night before we left (it was actually over 90 here in MA so we spent that day at the beach -getting prepared for the heat).

We froze waterbottles every day at the hotel and carried them with us (the kids complained the water was warm before we even got to the parks!) When they wouldn't drink them anymore I dumped them on their heads. But most of the time we were completely drenched in sweat. We stuck w/frozen lemonades & italian ices (tried icecream once...but it was hopeless)

I think we lucked out because most of the time when we were at the parks it was a little cloudy (lots of big fluffy clouds to hide the sun)...or completely overcast. One night we were at epcot it was so comfortable w/ a nice breeze...I could have used a light sweater.

When we were at the pools they were empty...I counted 20 people in the pool at AKL, which is huge. No lines for the slide.

We missed most of the showers...The night we went to Rainforest Cafe & Downtown disney it downpoured (while we were eating)..then the sun came out and it was very comfortable.

fact: It is soooo much cooler in the shade!

Thanks, Jen

p.s. Animal Kingdom was nausiating, literally, I had to take a long rest on a bench in Rafiki's Planet watch-great place to cool off!
