Does Ice water make you gain weight?

Thats not the first time i heard that! and its so not true! in Hispanic country's people are sooo full og myths.. i remeber one time this lady saw me drinking icy water and she told me " you know thats does not help it makes you fat" I was like what!! why? she did not have an explanation so i was like [edited] that! thats [edited]! lol:lmao:

when you drink ice water, yiour metabolism slows down for hours. and you will burn less calories due to that. so you dont actually gian weight, you just lose calories less efficiently.
With all due respect that makes zero sense. Any act of eating or drinking regardless of temperature uses calories. Water, cold, hot, luke warm doesn't matter has zero calories, you are expending calories (albeit minimal calories) to drink it technically creating (a very tiny) deficit. If anything it would have a positive effect especially if you are constantly drinking water. I'm not a math genius but the idea that is slows your metabolism is ridiculous. :confused3

Actually, I only drink water lukewarm/room temperature to slightly warm. I know I am a freak! Drinking cold water makes me so cold. Anyone else? :lmao:

I've actually heard the opposite. Some say your body burns calories warming the water.
This is what I've heard.
So I turn to my husband (drinking iced water) and say "apparently drinking water with ice in it makes you gain weight!" His response? "Oh well that's probably why I can't lose weight"...meanwhile he has a gallon tub of cookies and cream ice cream balanced on his stomach. Oh yes, I'm sure it's the water...
It would stand to reason that ICE cream burns calories too, no? :rolleyes1

I HATE iced water, not because it makes me cold, but because I just find it very unpleasant to drink. :confused3 I always drink room temp water. However, if I put any flavoring in it, it must be very cold...the colder, the better. :confused3

...and let's not forget that the more water you drink, the more full you feel, hence the less food you consume. :thumbsup2 This is why I actually like drinking cold, cold diet root beer...there's something about root beer that always makes me feel way more full than water or even regular diet soda. Maybe it has bigger fizzies. ;)

It's not that the more you drink the more full you feel. :) The body processes thirst as hunger, and therefore you think you are hungry, when you may be only thirsty.

Drinking enough water to keep the "thirst" process off, will assist with eating less, because you won't be eating when you are only thirsty. :)

As for cold versus not cold, meh. I prefer room temperature water, but that's because I drink so much water I'd never keep it cold until I was done. Plus, when the container is cold, it sweats as it warms up and makes a mess. LOL.

I would be more concerned that your mother is visiting such an incompetant doctor!

In the doctors defense, my mother claims her doctor tells her all kinds of insane things. Like she is to only eat bacon for breakfast. Yeah, a woman who has had a sextuple bypass is only to eat bacon for breakfast I'll believe your doctor told you that. Setting aside the fact that my mother is a socipathic liar it's more likely the doctor told her it was okay to eat bacon at breakfast every once in awhile and she translated that to suit what she wanted to do.

I'm thinking maybe the same may have happened with the OP's mother. (but rather a misunderstanding then choosing to hear what she wants to hear)

Doctor:"It looks like you've put on a couple of pounds."
Patient:"You know I filled up on ice water on the way over here."
Doctor: "Well, that could do it."
Translation for doctor=Filling up on water before being weighed could show up as a couple pounds.
Translation for patient=Drinking ice water makes you gain weight!

Of course I have no idea if that's what happened but I wouldn't call a doctor incompetent if I didn't hear him say it myself.

I will state the obvious, like a few others have stated. To me the big deal isn't what temp water your mother is drinking, but that she is going to a Dr that even tells her such a crazy thing. I don't think that I would trust this person with something as complicated as medical issues if he can't figure out that 0 calories equal no weight gain, maybe I could see bloating you some but no real weight gain. CRAZY

I think we have the same mother. :rotfl2: My mom is always coming up with some crazy stuff the doctor told her. I know she just misunderstands things. She does it with other people too. :sad2:

No, in order for our mothers to be the same person she would have to make it up or twist it her way not just misunderstand. :lmao: My mom is a whole 'nother thread all on her own, trust me.

As I said before I'm willing to bet this is a misunderstanding between the OP's mother and the doctor and not that the doctor is some kind of hack. My grandmother would say "Dr. F told me so and so..." and you'd think 'what the heck is WRONG with this guy?' It would turn out that Dr. F gave her this advice 20, 30, 40 years ago! Outdated medicine and a poor memory became an absolute in her mind. So I have to wonder if it was her current doctor that even told her this. I'm not saying there aren't quacks out there because we all know there are but if the OP is concerned about her mother's doctor (which she hasn't expressed) she could easily make herself available for the next appt and question him herself. I've had more the a few conversations (w/his permission of course) with my dad's doctors and they were more then willing to tell me exactly what they said and what they mean.

What was the name of the Indian doctor/therapist that used to be on Oprah years ago?

I saw a show with him where he said it was healthier to drink room temp beverages, because your body wastes too much energy getting very cold or very warm liquids to body temperature.:rotfl: I thought it was crazy then, and I still think it is crazy!

OP- I think it is time for your mom to look for a new doctor (and I use that term loosely!)...

Sounds like a good excuse to drink more red wine! :thumbsup2

Are you my sister in law? lol

My diabetic MIL insists her doctor told her to eat only one meal per day. And a host of crazy things.

:rotfl:Well I'm sitting here eating some bacon and drinking ice water, I'm thinking maybe they will balance each other out. You know the ice water will burn all the calories of the bacon I'm eating. It's worth a shot!

Me. I can only drink water at room temp.

Years ago I had a doctor tell me ice cold water was bad for the kidneys???:confused3

Not all medical doctors are nutritionists. I think it's horrendous that they give out nutritional info because they KNOW people believe them. I've heard some of the most RIDICULOUS nutritional claims from people who call themselves physicians.... :sad2:

This one is about the most ridiculous I've ever heard.
