Does everyone gain 5-6 lbs?

I'm trying to plan how much weight to try to lose so I don't go even further over my suggested weight! Someone said everyone gains 5 to 6 lbs on a cruise. What's your experience?

That all depends on how you do your cruise. :D

I typically lose weight on the cruise.

But, I also use the elevators very infrequently, and the shore excursions we usually plan are walking. Last time, we walked the Dig at Atlantis, that ia a LONG walk! But very worth it! :teeth:

I had lost 30lb before our WDW/Cruise vacation in Aug. I'm happy to say I only gained 3lb between 1 week at WDW and 1 week on the Magic. I ate anything I wanted, had dessert every night, etc. We did so much walking in WDW I'm sure I burned it off there and on the ship we took the stairs everywhere so that helps too. Good luck on your trip,

I HATE dieting and work very hard to maintain my weight by making healthy eating choices daily. I have gained up to 3-4 pounds on a cruise before but most of the time I just maintain my weight. I certainly do watch what I eat even on the cruise and I try to work out a few times, plus I almost always take the stairs. It's depressing enough to come home from the cruise, thinking about dieting on top of that would put me over the edge. ;)

You're smart to lose in advance if you think you will gain weight on the cruise, at least you'll net out in the end. :)

A great way to combat the extra pounds is to take the stairs if at all possible, and I always tried to walk the promenade deck in the mornings and evenings... besides its very pretty out there, and quiet, its like being on your own private deck!

I saw a definite different in weight gain from the cruise where I took mostly the stairs and the cruise I took the elevator more.

Next time it is back to the stairs. The time I used the stairs more I actually lost 3 lbs. during the cruise!!!

I agree with the stair lovers! We took the stairs 98% of the time and I kept my weight down that way. I also worked out in the exercise room as much as possible. The mornings when we'd have excursions booked I wouldn't have time to work out, but days at sea give you plenty of time for burning off some FAT! They also have exercise classes scheduled and listed in the daily Navigator, so that's something else to consider. Long walks around Deck 4 after dinner are also a good idea. You can plan on gaining 5-10 lbs. if you don't do anything to work off the extra food you eat on the cruise.

Unbelieveably, neither Tony nor I gained any weight during our three-peat. But we took some steps to avoid the extra pounds...we joined a local health club two weeks before cruising to get ourselves into the habit of working out, and we continued to do that on the ship (and are still continuing :D ). We did the stairs quite a bit, and I only ate until full even when it meant skipping dessert. It was hard, but I was determined!! My family has a major history of heart disease (both mother and father had heart attacks and died in their 50s), so I'm starting to look after myself a little more because I want to be around for lots more years of cruising. Hopefully by our Nov. cruise I'll be 10 lbs. lighter or so!

Oh my gosh... you know what I did one night on our cruise last year???

Ate 3 entrees. That's right - 3: Salmon, Veal AND chicken. But, before those entrees, I had only 1 order of escargot and 1 salad, so... ;)

Yes I'm serious. And yes, I had dessert... Twice.

Throughout the cruise, I had a beer or 2 every day. Sometimes more.

I rarely walked past Scoops without getting a treat.

And that pizza on deck??? Ohhhh so good! I ate lots of it!!!

And don't even get me started on the brunch at Palo's. I ate eggs, bacon, croissants, ham, soup, shrimp, sweet pizza, chicken cacciatore, omlette, pancakes, fruit and champagne!!!

Guess what...

I gained exactly one-half pound according to my digital scale! :) :) :)

I NEVER used an elevator all week long. I swam, snorkeled, walked through the towns, walked the ship, then walked the ship again, then went to the spa, then walked all over Castaway Cay, then did Tae-Bo in my stateroom!

It's not that bad... EAT! Enjoy! :) Even without the spa and Tae-Bo, you'll get some exercise whether you want it or not! Just stay out of the elevators and keep moving!! You'll be fine. Enjoy yourself... you're on vacation.

I didn't gain because of the walking I did at WDW, Nassau, and on the ship. I have to say though, that I was never stuffed after any dinners on DCL. For the most part, the portions were small compared to what I am used to, and I never ordered doubles. I always had room for dessert each night (which never happens at regular restaurants in our neck of the woods). As much fun as eating frenzies can be a large part of cruising fun and as much as I thought I missed having larger portions while I was on the ship, in retrospect, I'm glad I never left the restuarants on DCL with that horrible "too full" feeling.

Thanks for the tip about using the stairs all the time.

Thanks everyone, at least now I know I'm not doomed. And Beano you must have a hollow leg!

I think I gained that much in 1 day. I could be exaggerating a little, but everything was sooo good and I can't wait until we go again.

Does anyone else here feel the need to hit Beano?? Just a little?? ;)

I had lost 15 pounds before my JAN 02 cruise by dieting and exercise ( Tae-BO) and I didn't gain any weight on our 4 day cruise. Between always taking the stairs and walking around deck 4 daily and the 6 hours of snorkling on Castaway Cay, I got lots of exercise. However, I ate what I pleased, which was all day long! Room service light breakfast, then BBB breakfast, snacks in the middle of the day, lunch, several frozen libations, then a burger around 5 to tide me over until dinner, then LARGE dinner, dessert included, then another drink or two:eek:

... is to go to Rockn' Bar D every night and dance the night away. It's pretty much non-stop and has themes each night -- 50's, Disco, 80's. I wonderful way to balance off all the wonderful food!!!:D

We almost always take the stairs. We also do walks around the Promenade and walk into town instead of taking cabs or the water taxi.
This time, we also plan on taking in some of those exercise classes because we will be sailing for 2 weeks.

I can give Beano a little slap if you all want me to, we are sailing together on the 10-12 cruise :p

Like many others, I ate what I wanted on our 7 day cruise and took the stairs all the time, except on formal and semi-formal night when I was in heels and I never gained a pound. Which is rare, since at home, I just LOOK at a piece of chocolate cake and I gain 5 pounds! You get a lot of exercise, whether you want it or not!

My hubby, like Beano, ate SO MUCH and he LOST weight!
His typical daily menu:
Breakfast at Topsiders: Eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, milk, a whole plate of fruit and 3-4 chocolate croissants.

Lunch: Usually room service..chicken fingers and fries, cookies, more fruit and more chocolate croissants that he smuggled from the breakfast buffet :p

Snacks: Scoops ice cream and fruit

Dinner: 1-2 appetizers, depending on the selection, always 2 entrees, sometimes 3 and 1-2 desserts.

And on nights where there were late night desserts, he would always sample most of the selections!

Can you guess what his favourite part of the cruise was? LOL

Boy, there must be something wrong with me. I gain 10-12 lbs on a 7 days cruise. I stay on a very low fat diet and exercise while at home. On the cruise I go crazy with all the good food and the yummy fruit drinks. Things I wouldn't normally have at home.
I do take the stairs on board, swim, take the exercise classes and walk or run around deck 4. I guess I can't take off the calories as fast as I'm putting them in. LOL Oh well, it's just 1 week a year. The weight comes right off once I get back into my normal way of eating and exercising.
Who's counting??? Live it up and have a great cruise.:Pinkbounc :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Now, Denine, that is very kind of you to offer!! How about you get him somewhere between his second and third entree...or maybe the first and second dessert?? LOL

I swear, you men have it easy! If we women ate like that we'd be blimps! *sigh*
