Hi, just wondering if Disneyland offers wheelchairs to rent? My grandma doesn't usually need one, but could use one with all the walking in the park. This way she will be able to keep up with all the grandchildren.

Yes, they do. We rented one for my mom and it worked out great! It was reasonably priced, too. I think it was around $15/day?

You may want to rent an ECV (we used Deckers for DMIL) that way you have it for the ride back and forth from the hotel. It wasn't much more than the $15 a day DL charges for the manual wheelchairs. Many of the rental companies have free delivery and pickup. Ours was waiting for her when we got there and they met us at the hotel when we were ready to leave. It fit easily into the room for her to charge at night. If she is like DMIL, she was fine few a day or two walking through the que lines. But by day 3 of 6, she had a hard time with her arthritic knees. She was able to go through the handicap entrance by just showing her key. She could have taken up to 5 people with her. It was so nice on Space Mountain, Splash and Indy which have amazingly long que lines. She rode right up to the ride vehicle and got on. It really saved her alot of pain

FWIW, my mom HATED the scooter. We had thought that was the best way to go, so we did as ballarinamom mentioned and rented one through Deckers. It was supposed to be waiting for us at GCH, but something went awry and we had to wait for it to show up. When it came, it was extremely difficult for my mom to maneuver and I think it may have been a lemon because none of the other adults could move it smoothly, either. It would lurch and take off at a fast speed no matter what setting it was on. My mom was so stressed by it that after half a day in the parks, she called Deckers and had them come back and take it away. The company was very nice about it and didn't charge, but my mom refused to try another scooter so we got the wheelchair instead. It was so much less stressful than that scooter for both my mom and the rest of us, but as I said, I'm pretty sure our scooter was a lemon. I certainly saw plenty of other people managing to ride around on them with no trouble. The wheelchair was about half the cost of the scooter so it must be less than I said. Do note that it can be heavy going pushing someone in a wheelchair uphill! You don't even realize there are hills at DLR until you have to push someone in a wheelchair :rotfl:.

The main reason we wanted a scooter was, as ballarinamom also said, because you can go to and from the hotel and elsewhere outside the parks with it. However, we discovered that we didn't really need to do that and we found (on our last day) that you can add a special thing to your rental that allows you to go outside the parks. We were staying onsite so I'm not sure if you can do that if you're in an off site hotel. BUT...the GCH/CA CMs were SOOOO nice--they let us come and go with the wheelchair through the GCH entrance and into/out of the hotel without making us leave the wheelchair behind and without the special 'license' to do so. There were times when it was easier to leave the chair at the back entrance and walk into the hotel but a few times we did take advantage of just wheeling on through.

I think a lot of it depends on the personality of your grandma! My mom is 77 and has had knee replacement surgery on both knees as well as back surgery with a special thing inserted in her spine, so she certainly OUGHT to use a scooter, but she's feisty, in age denial, and also insecure about driving a scooter so the wheelchair worked much better in our situation.

The nice thing about Deckers is that if you rent a scooter from them and it doesn't work out, there is no problem returning it. They will just come back and pick it up. You can also rent ECVs in the park, but it costs more and you don't get to take them outside the parks.

I am glad to know about Deckers as two yrs ago I used Universal Mobility in Anaheim and am still waiting for my refund for turning it in early. I was looking for a new company and shall try Deckers. Thanks for the info.

We just got back from Disneyland and we rented a wheelchair there and they let us take it back and forth to the Disneyland Hotel. We got to keep it the whole 4 days that we rented it. They just said we need to show our checkout slip when we left the park, but I don't remember ever being asked for it. I think it was about $12/day.

FYI, the company name is Deckert's, not Deckers (full name is Deckert Surgical Company, 714-542-5607). They're located in Santa Ana, which is not far from Disneyland.

I rented an ECV for the first time when I was at DLR in September, and Deckert's was great! I called them about an hour before they closed on 9/10 and was able to have an ECV delivered to my hotel the next morning (I got it before 9:00 AM, but I think their normal delivery time is before 8:00 AM). The cost for 5 days was $170 (worked out to $34/day) with free delivery and pickup; they didn't charge me a deposit, but I read in other threads that there is a refundable deposit. It's very convenient - they deliver the ECV to bell services at the hotel and at the end of your stay you just drop off the ECV with bell services again, and Deckert's will pick it up.

FYI, I would not recommend doing what I did ... better to reserve in advance, just to make sure you've got your wheelchair or ECV confirmed before your trip.

The ECV was in good working order and it didn't take long for me to get the hang of it. As a new ECV user, the key thing I learned in crowds was to put the speed control much closer to "turtle" (slow) than rabbit (fast). ;)

Great info, thank you so much for all the tips. We are leaning toward the ECV. Hopefully, we wont get DizMe's moms EVC. I can just see my grandmas face if it started lurching forward and taking off on its own. I was cracking up at that story. Thanks again everyone!

OMG, it was scary!! The park was crowded and the 'Turtle' setting did not deliver. Pair that with a newbie ECV driver and lots of people who pay no attention to those on scooters and you have the potential for disaster. Of course, it's kind of funny in retrospect, but at the time my mom was a white-knuckled mess and did not want to try again with a different scooter . We figured she just didn't know how to drive it so we tried it ourselves and man, I have to tell you--I wouldn't have wanted to move around in crowds on that thing either. My kids, however, were very disappointed at the loss of Grandma's hog :rotfl:.
