Does Disney World hire full time cast members or do you start part time first?

I have a friend who is wanting to apply for a cast member job at Disney World just to earn some extra money for her household. She just wants to work in one of the gift shops or something along that line (entry level). Would there be a chance of her getting hired full time right from the start or would she have to start as part time and work up from there? She's hoping to get the insurance benefits to help lower the cost of what her husband is paying for insurance now. Any cast members who could help with this question? Thank you!

Unless the position is managerial or in aan office, generally they will hire part time first. But it does depend on the needs and positions available.

Part timers are able to get medical insurance. However, I have not paid attention to what is offered as I am both on Medicare and also have BC/BS through my retirement.

I appreciate your reply. It's good to know that she can get medical insurance even with a part time position. Even if she wasn't hired in as full time, maybe she'd be able to work into it without waiting too
long. Thank you!

What is Disney's employment situation with the economy? Was wondering....in the past, I knew they hired seasonal or part-time help and let that person work a minimum amount of time and could still get benefits I think. Had actually thought of trying to do this to feed my Disney addiction--now that I am retired. I live out of state and wondering if they still hire as such for seasonal workers.

I"ll chime in here ...... up to last week, the only full time cast member positions WDW is seeking are characters and dancers and singers, for general merch, food, custodial, etc., its seasonal and part time....

That's good to know. Any idea what the minimum number of hours that is required in order to get insurance benefits? Thank you. :)

I'm only available (to Disney) two days a week, so they cannot schedule me other than Wednesdays or Thursdays without my specific consent. Normally I am assigned either a six or eight hour shift. And every year I get the information about signing up for the insurance, which I just toss away as I have much better coverage.

As a part-timer, you can not work more than a 1000hrs (something close to that) per year. During off season, part timers do not have a minimum number of hrs to be scheduled. So all available hrs are sent to full timers first who must recieve a min of 32hrs per week, then part timers, then seasonal.

I know part timers pay a little more for benefits than full timers, but not by much. This is the benefits as a full timer, prices per week.
As an individual, it's like 8$ for the basic coverage. They also give you 200$ for FSA account.
Free vision - frames every other year, lenses every year, one exam
high vision - 5$, higher allowance on frames (165$), frames and lenses every year. Lower deductible.
dental - 3$ i think for the basic dental, not really sure what's included in this.
PPO dental - 5$ or something for this one. This pays a percentage rather than a set price for different things. But there's no cost for 1yr x-rays and 3-4 cleanings per year. I think the detuctible is like 75$ or something.

there's also a great big list of things that the benefits cover, like a chiropracter is only 20$ per visit. Last year or so, they've opened the new wellness center. It's an on property medical center with a pharmacy for some OTC med and prescriptions, and doctors for all sorts of things.

Disney does a lot of things to encourage people to sign up for the benefits, including discounts if you fulfill certain requirements.

Thank you. That's great info to know. Wow, the insurance really is reasonable and sounds like it has great coverage. It'd be worth working there just to get the insurance. I'll definitely pass along the info to her.

It's good to know you're offered the insurance with working only two days a week. I appreciate the info. :)
