Does decor matter to you?

So I was wondering, am I the only one that cares about decor when selecting a vacation home? The reason I ask is that I'm so shocked how many homes have outdated decor - think 80's furniture, big heavy drapes, tapestry bedspreads, etc. I know this all costs money to replace, but in the long run you'd probably get more rentals from a nicer looking property. I also think it's weird when an owner doesn't paint their home, and all the walls are white. Just a little splash of color would make things look so much better. :artist:

Also, I wish more owners would put roller blinds on their windows... some of us like to sleep in while on vacation. ;) :lmao:

I do. If I'm renting a vacation house I'm going to be spending a lot more time there than say a hotel. I'll be cooking and relaxing. I want to be in a place that is appealing to me.

I absolutely do! I was surprised also at how ugly some of the furnishing were in some places!

I would think going with white/beige paint would be the safer way to go - when you paint colors you are going to get people who love the color, but also people who hate the color. It's the same reason most apartments are painted white.

It matters to me. When I am on vacation I like my surroundings to be aesthetically pleasing. I chose a condo that has nice decor and furnishings.

All of the homes are individually owned so beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

You are absolutely correct and I should not have worded it that way. I apologize. (The hazards of being a mom to 3 kids and running on lack of sleep is having what I like to call "diarrhea mouth")

Nothing to apologize for.

There are some homes that will be to your taste but I bet many more will not.

We are all different and all of the homes will be also. You will find one that fits just right I am sure.

I completely picked our last vacation home rental based on decor. I knew we were staying at either the Windsor Hills or the Windsor Palms. I wanted something that I knew we would all like and I picked one over the others because it had a great Mickey bedroom for our kids! That way they wouldn't miss staying on-site!

It only has to be as nice as my home---not a hard standard to meet. ;)

I tend to agree. As long as the house is clean and comfortable, I'm generally going to be more concerned about the price I can get the property for. If two properties are comparable in price and amenities, then I would more than likely go with the nicer decor (unless I liked dealing with one owner better than the other).

I guess what I mean is that while the decor could factor in, it wouldn't be the highest on my priority list. :goodvibes

Just wondering Brian does the wife agree?
More or less, seeing as how we live in the same house... ;)

More seriously---I don't need marble counters, or "tasteful art", or the newest this or hippest that. I like the home to be well-kept, clean and comfortable. I really like the homes that allow their owners' personalities to show through rather than those that just go with "rental furnishing package C". You tend to see more "quirky owner" style in OBX than Orlando, but we like knowing we're in someone's home rather than just a really nice investment property.

I should add that though decor matters to me, I chose a place with simple furnishings because I have two small children. No glass tables, nothing that looked too fancy or easily breakable. I won't be able to relax if I am constantly saying "Stop that, don't touch that."

That's a good point, especially if you have toddlers. :thumbsup2

After seeing some of the Mickey bedrooms in the Windsor Hills homes, I'm going to answer "YES, decor matters!". We stayed at Vistana Villages but I think we'll probably go with something like Windsor Hills next time. One of the houses seems to be total Disney decor but not in-your-face (except for the kid's bedrooms, where it's welcomed)....the rooms seem tastefully decorated but with Disney in mind throughout.

I don't need fancy but I want the rooms to be clean and kept up. I don't want to see walls that need painted and furniture in need of repair.

I do prefer simple furnishings....the more space, the better. Too much makes a place looked cluttered.

We're planning a WH trip for Dec 26 to Jan 2, and at first I was looking at decor, padded splash pool furniture and the like. Then I received an offer that was substantially discounted from the website (original prices very similar to everyone else's). I can live with plastic pool chairs for the $100s I am going to save. The interior is much the same as many, and does have a few painted walls -- not all beige! ;)

Actually a few years ago we stayed in a 2 br condo in Windsor Palms. We nicknamed it the "Beige Condo," since everything, walls, spreads, towels, etc, were in shades of beige. We agreed it was fine and would stay there again if we needed a 2 br.

Yes, the Mickey/Disney themes are nice... especially if you have young children. My DD is so excited about staying in her princess room when we visit WH again this October. DS is also excited, because this time he won't have to share a room with his little sister. LOL

LOL, my DH thinks I'm nuts!!! I want the walls painted. I've seen some nice townhomes BUT the walls are white! I just can't stand it. I know it might seem strange to others as well but paint really adds to a home. I don't need to have every wall painted but at least one wall in a room would make a big difference. Glad I'm not the only one who feels this way ;)

My one pet peave when looking for houses was that there were alot of loud floral printed patterns on furniture. I am ok with some floral prints but I just don't go much for the over the top floral patterns I have seen. Another thing I tend to look for, and I know this might sound strange to some, but I am not a big fan of having tile floors throughout the house. I am OK with it in the kitchen, bathrooms and things like that but I prefer to see more carpet in the houses. When my kids were infants/toddlers I always worried that if they fell on the tile they could get seriously hurt. Whenever we look for a place to stay, its pretty easy to weed out our likes and dislikes! Doesn't have to be plain white/beige throughout, if the decor compliments the wall color I am good with that. My kids LOVE having a thememd bedroom to call their own for a week but I prefer the themed rooms to mainly pertain to the kiddie areas!
