Does buying VB/HH not make sense even a small contract?

Ok, so i've heard how you shouldn't buy into HH/VB if its not your main resort you want to stay in b/o the high MFs. But what if all I want is a small contract, like 25 points. Just enough to get in the DVC system. Paying higher MFs on such a small contract isnt really such a hit on my wallet. I really want just want about 100 points at SSR. Once I do purchase those points from DVC, I can put the HH/VB contract back on the market or just keep them for the extra points. It wouldn't be a big deal since i'd be paying so little MFs on the small contract. I am using HH/VB as an example because they seem to be the easiest resorts to find at resale for such few points.

Are there any drawbacks from my plan?

We thought about doing this too. I'd be interested to see what people thought.

I am confused if what you want is SSR at 100 pts the board sponsor http://www.dvc-resales.com/dvclisting.cfm has 2 contracts listed at this time and another resller I checked also has 1 at exactly that number of points. If what you say you want 100 pts at SSR is so readily available on the resale market why are you looking for a different way to become a DVC member and considering buying something else?:confused3

Do you have some other aspect of small contracts you meant to be discussing ?

Really, because of small contract are easier to sell through resale, i'd rather get like (2) 50 point SSR contracts in case I ever feel the need to resell. It would just be easier to purchase through DVC.

I started with a 80 point contract at HH and I love it. I bought it sight unseen but going there I am very happy. Since we are WDW addicts we have only made it to HH 1 time. My contract has also appreciated in value. If you are planning on adding on I think it is a fine idea. Although now that I am a DVC member I am addicted to going the first week in december. If I had not added on I would never get a ressie that week. Now with my add on I can get a ressie to make sure I can get in and then if I switch at the 7 month mark I use my HH points and save my BWV points for my 11 month reservations. HTH :goodvibes

I now see your problem.

I think in buying a small contract to get in the system and then buy small add-on contracts at the resort where you want to own is sensible. I would be worried about:
1) Price what is the all included price of entry (purchase price including fees) and certainly HHI and VB tend to offer the lowest price points.
2) Location my long-term desire to keep what I am buying (i.e. I would prefer to buy at a resort where I intend to stay so thaht I don't need to include exit costs in addition to entry costs as part of my economics for entry into the system).
3) UY - DVD is going to sell you points that mach your UY that you already own. So I would be careful what UY I buy. This may or may not be important depending on your point utilization plan for the planned ultiimate membership portfolio and many might argue that I am making to much of the importance of UY. Do you intend to hold multiple resorts? Do you plan to make extensive use of the banking and borrowing features to maximize multiple 11 month booking adantage windows in alternating years. IMHO UY impacts flexibility in making corrections where the banking and borrowing scenarios are a part of your point utilization planning. I am planning to buy a UY beginning immediately before my primary usage window (Dec UY our primary plan is Christmas - 1st week of Jan trip) to provide alternative usage flexibility (plans change use points at SB or early summer or bank before May 31 and push plan to next Christmas) in the event my Primary plans must change (i.e christmas trips - Dec, SB trips Feb or Mar, Summer trips May or June, fall trips Sept or Oct) Obviously none of this matters if you are not planning the usage of your points 6 or more months in advance and probably even then is not extremely important unless disruptions are prevelant (I have had to rearrange plans in 4 of the last 6 years do to family or work conflicts). I am not saying that any given UY can't be used to accomplish any of these trips I am saying that some UY trip combinations say Dec UY for a Christmas trips provide better flexibility in the event changes have to be made than other combos do say a Feb UY for a Christmas trip.

We just bought a HH resale of 50 points. It had 50 banked points and we used those 100 points to make our reservation at AKV. We waited for a small contract with banked points to come along, did not take too long to get what we wanted. Checked the TSS site every day.

We were thrilled with our purchase and then bought points at SSR direct from Disney since we were already members. We plan to keep the HH points for awhile since we only live 5 hours away. 50 points can get us a studio in the off season for a quick getaway.

The resale process was much more anxiety ridden (ROFR, waiting to close, etc.) than the direct Disney purchase but it was worth it!

Good luck!!
