Does anyone worry about a terror threat in the parks?

To put your mind at ease, after 9/11 happened, the United States went to two places for advice on what to do to improve security. The first was Israel's Mossad and the second was Disney. You are safer in Disney than almost any other place. They have layers of protection in place that the public never sees.

DH and I were just talking about this yesterday. I had always wanted to cruise, but after 9-11 all I could picture was one gigantic sitting duck, sitting in the middle of a body of water. I can't swim well, and rarely go past my knees in the ocean, so I got pretty consumed with this fear. Flying never scared me, but drowning did. Anyway, I'm over it, and want to plan a DIsney cruise for DH, me and DGD, so he asked if I was still afraid of a terror threat. I told him that if security on Disney Cruise Line is 1/2 of what it is in the parks, I am fear free!

I know that no matter where I am at any given time, something terrible can happen, but I also know that WDW is pretty darn secure.

It's always on my mind as I go thru security at DIsney. I don't think they often check bags, strollers, etc., very thoroughly. There's probably always more "risk" where there are a lot of people together in a relatively small area. I also think about terrorism at the Bristol Motor Speedway in my town. It's the 4th largest "stadium" in the US.

I cannot say that this is true, but I heard that the bag checks are really to slow those folks down so the "real" security can see who and what is going into the parks. It makes good sense to me, so I figure that there is at least an element of truth in it.

Nope. When you get to your room, go in the bathroom, give a big two-fingered salute and silently say 'screw you terrorists!'. If you have fears, they've won. If you're scared, they've won. I'm sorry, but I do not allow terrorists or fear to rent space in my head. Be observant, yes. Fearful? Nope. Have an awesome time pixiedust:

I am not sure I agree. It is okay to be a little afraid, they do not win. Shoot- I am afraid when I look down! LOL! IMO, they only win when we let fear overpower our ability to travel freely. They win when we let fear paralyze us. The lose big time when we say.. screw you! I'm here and I'll go anywhere else I want to go! I ll take my chances here over anywhere else in this great World! So I agree, give a big salute!

Aidensmommy, I just wanted to thank you for bringing up this topic. I live in the Boston area and was in DW 3 weeks after the marathon bombings. While watching Wishes one night along with a packed Main Street, someone next to me put down a backpack and then stepped away a few steps to talk to a family member. I became so paranoid that I almost had to leave (& certainly did not enjoy Wishes that night). Afterwards, I searched the Dis for a discussion of the topic of terrorism in DW and never found one. For those of you replying simply "no" or "nope, the thought never entered my mind"---well, those aren't really helpful comments to someone who has said she HAS thought/worried about this issue. But I have appreciated reading other people's thoughts about WHY they don't worry about this, and just the general comments regarding safety at DW. Thanks again for bringing this up OP.

I am so sorry you experienced the bombings, and that the images continue to linger. I cannot imagine that day.

I guess I understand that some folks really do not concern themselves with "What if's. I am a bit like those folks in some respects. I never worried about flying after 9-11. Was not scared of crowded places. My DH would not get on a plane for years after, and still would do a personal inspection if he could. For me, it was a cruise. Terrified, and of something I had never ever done before!

I think that when we answer these questions, some of us are more literal than others, so that may be why they say "Nope, not at Disney. Never crossed my mind." No one goes fear free everywhere, there is always some place or something that makes a person step back and think twice, but in some of these threads, if that is not the question, the answer is specifically to that spot, YKWIM? I also have been reassured about safety measures in place at WDW, but not for terrorist attacks. I think that in the event of any tragedy, they are o well trained. I was able to see the bomb dogs working, and once again, was impressed with WDW vigilance.

I work/study at a potential target. One of the largest and most well known hospitals in Chicago. I can't live in fear everyday, so I don't think about it. :confused3

No, you'll be fine. It's one of the safest places in the country. And we've never seen anything happen on any 9/11 after 2001.

I bet when you're there it doesn't even enter your mind. And it shouldn't. Your biggest worry should be making sure your all your Fast Passes work.

It's not terrorism, but I found this fun map while people were discussing the likelihood of a nuclear attack as Russia slowly goes crazy doing its thing.

Florida is rightly screwed.

Being afraid of terrorism is a lot like being afraid of flying.

Yes, there's a risk, but it's so low, you're much more likely to die on your way to the grocery store. Or having some kind of household accident.

I am not scared of terrorism at home, but I'm even less concerned at WDW.
