Does anyone use a protein powder?

My trainer and physician suggested I start using a protein powder since I work out so much. But I don't know what to mix it with. Today I tried making a yogurt smoothie......:p YUCK!!! Flavored yogurt I can handle but not plain. So then I made a smoothie out of milk, strawberries, half a bananna and some splenda....it was tolerable.

But the problem is I want to go back onto Atkins Induction and can't have a smoothie, so I am running low on options for the powder...any suggestions?

I use my Designer Protein powder for shakes - powder, water, strawberries, ice, Splenda.

I also use it to make nut crusts for my low-carb cheesecake - almonds or hazlenuts ground up, protein powder, butter and Splenda.

Neither of these are good for induction, though. Maybe someone else has some ideas??

You might be able to use some of these on induction (or near induction): homemade protein bar recipes

I think you'd probably also be able to get away with a protein shake on induction... whey protein, cream, half & half or Carb Countdown milk, and maybe some sugar-free DaVinci syrup if you have access to it, or a little Splenda or stevia with flavor extracts.

When you do your yogurt smoothies again, try the DaVinci or the Splenda/extract route... you won't know it's not flavored yogurt. Mix some fresh berries in, if you like. Cottage cheese is also a good smoothie base.

dizneegirl to the rescue once again. Thanks for the suggestions!

I use protein powder as well....my personal choice is vanilla whey made by Peak Nutrition (I get it at the gym....)

My usual way of using protein powder is in a smoothie. I blend 1 Dannon lite & fit yogurt with 1 scoop vanilla protein, and fresh fruit...adding a little water or fruit juice if needed....then I blend in approx. 1 cup of crushed ice.....and a bit of splenda or honey if needed...my all-time-favorite is Orange-mango yogurt w/ canned pineapple (in it's own juice)....yummy! And sweet enough that I don't need extra sweetener!

I've also used the protein in oatmeal....old fashioned oats, not the "quick" kind....boil the water (use more than they say to....) on the stove, stir in the oats...cook until oats are done, but the oatmeal is still *soupy* due to the extra water....then stir in 1/2 - 1 scoop of protein, THEN (here's the best part....) stir in 1 packet of the Swiss Miss diet hot cocoa mix! Usually I top it off with a BLOB (no dollops here!) of cool whip lite! And yes, I do eat it for breakfast! :p

Hi Ginger,
It's Kathy again,
Protein shakes are great; I have vanilla soy protien powder I mix with chocolate soy milk, and chocolate soy protien powder that I mix with vanilla soy milk. I use a blender and add a couple ice cubes to make the shake really cold and thick, and it's great.

I also can use the vanilla powder mixed in yogurt. Either way it tastes good and fills me up. I have been working out a lot, including lifting weights, and I was warned this may increase my appetite. I have to admit I always feel hungrier now that when I was just doing cardio stuff, but things are toning up so I am going to stick with it. From what I've read, that muscle is burning more calories that the fat even when I am resting, so muscle it is!

The protien powders also come in a whey protein, which may work for you. I just decided to go with soy because I think it may have a few more health benefits, and because as I get older my stomach doesn't like regular milk so much.

Kathy

I like GNC Optimum Nutrition Vanilla Whey protein powder. I make "frappucinos" with it in the mornings, and also use it to bake with - especially in flaxseed muffins/bread!
