Does anyone run the PHM without the company of their family?

The peace of mind knowing there's a princess spot just for you is priceless! I can't believe the jump yesterday...from 87% to 94% capacity. Wow!

Hope you had a great run! My early morning run was cancelled as Jen has a stomach bug but I will be going solo some time today to make up for it. It looks to be a beautiful day!

Yesterday's run almost didn't happen. I was at a meeting, sharing the hotel treadmills with a bunch of other people, and when I went down at 5:30am only one of them was working! Managed to squeeze my time in and glad I did. I was whipped last night when I got home - would have been tough working up the motivation to get on the treadmill then.

The 94% scared me this morning when a friend who's doing the race msgd me to let me know.

So i panicked and booked my place!

I'll be doing it alone, and coming from Ireland for it! People will think Im mad but I dont care.

Its someth to motivate and train for and achieve!!

Fantastic - congratulations!! And what a commitment! You will be so glad you made it. :thumbsup2

Absolutely! I love my family, but when I'm racing, I'm in race mode, not have fun with the family mode. I want lots of alone time, the ability to get up and dressed at a ridiculous hour without worrying about waking anyone, and the knowledge that I can skip the parks entirely in favor of relaxation after the race. I'm meeting a friend for TOT, but am otherwise solo for TOT, WDW 1/2 and the GSC. :thumbsup2

Yay, congrats on pushing the button! You can do it :cheer2:

So are you going to get dressed into a costume? I think I'm going to do a tutu, but the rest will be typical running gear.

(and might I add, this particular Irish-American found Ireland a lovely place to visit in 2007 and is looking to go back)

I visited about 15 years ago and would love to get back, too. So gorgeous.

I saw you signed up (YAY!) and just wanted to share that I'm going solo also - as in no family, no girlfriends. It's my first Disney race, but has been on my wish list forever! I think we'll be in good company - there's lots of solo people that go, and there's 20k best friends to be just waiting to meet us :)

That's so right! You'll have to keep an eye out for the meet-up. Can't wait to meet all of my new friends! :goodvibes

Yeah! Don't panic. I have always done Run Disney races solo (I have a very non-Disney DH) You have plenty of time to train. And they'll be lots of WISH-ers at the race to get to know.

Yes, i think once I get started next week I should be ready in comfortable timing!

From what I have watched of the races, they all seem very group orientated, it being Disney I suppose!!

I do know a girl running but i suspect she'll be far faster than I!

If any of you do return to Ireland, dont forget to visit Cork #realcapitalofireland

Finally getting around to posting.
This is my first 1/2 and my first big Disney race, I've done one 5k at WDW with DS17 a few years ago
My family will be traveling with me and we are all doing the 5K but I will be the 10K and the 1/2 alone.
If anyone run/walks between a 12 and 14 minute mile, that's where I'll be. I'm currently between a 13:30 and 14:30.

NO ONE runs any event or trains w/ me--and I'm fine with it :-) It was a little lonely at F&W half last year as it seemed like everyone else had a companion, but I reminded myself that I had trained alone so this was no different.

Love it! I'm not really sure what pace I'm aiming for yet. As long as I finish and have a good time doing it, I'm good with that. And I have to tell you - I LOVE your smilies! Hilarious, especially the 12 year old. :)

I can't speak to the F&W Half (or any, for that matter), but it seems like this race in particular is about lifting other women up and, since so many will be going solo, meeting new friends along the way. I really can't wait to go. :goodvibes

My goal is to have more fun than the Everest challenge. I was so worried about getting through it that I didn't really get to enjoy it.
I've been a little obsessive about pacing but I figure if I worry about it now, I won't worry about it when the race comes.
Thanks for the compliments about the smilies! It's is a true representation of my clan. They are a bunch of crazies!

Just checking in! Opted to train outside today, even though it's hot and sticky. But I'm not crazy about doing most of my running on the treadmill - want to be sure I'm comfy on the road, too.

Had a good go, until two miles in when I pulled a muscle. I almost called my DH to come pick me up, but managed to walk the last mile with some stretches built in, and did just fine. Blew my pace, but it's ok - it's just one day. :goodvibes Still very early in Jeff Galloway's conditioning program (finishing Week 2), but so happy with my progress. :)

Taking the kids to the zoo this afternoon - more walking, but at a much more relaxed pace. ::yes::

I ran in the Princess Half this past Feb. alone. DH refused to go to Disney again so I took the trip with my sister and daughter. Dsis and DD hit the parks during the run where as if DH was there he would have been at the sidelines cheering me on.

I am very glad I did the Princess Half since it was the whole reason I started running, but I was a bit sad running by BLT (where we stayed) and the other monorail resorts and not having anyone cheering me on:sad2:

As soon as I got home I told DH he is never staying home again. I don't care if he just goes the weekend or even the day/night of the race, he will not miss one again.

One thing that helped was signing up for the race retreat so I didn't have to hang out alone before and after the race.

I'm so sorry you didn't feel like you had the support you needed. :( Did you find opportunities to meet other women racing alone in the Race Retreat?

I hope your next experience is a more positive one. :)

Finally read through this thread.

I will be going solo this year. I have run solo in 2010 and 2013 , but have traveled with family. I have run the whole thing with both my daughters in 2009. In 2011 we started together but parted ways after the castle and in 2012 I ran with one daughter.

This year I will be traveling alone and doing the triple crown. My flight is booked and I have a room at Pop booked ( arriving Thursday and leaving Sunday). It would be nice to find some one to share and split cost of room, but I am ok on my own as well.

I train on my own and I like it and so running is fine. I did the DL half in 2010 alone and found that it was a bit lonely at mealtime. It would be nice to hookup with some people for dinners...which would be early bird for me as we will be up early for our races.

We are visiting from Ireland...I am running solo but hopefully my mom DH DS and DD will be there to see me finish! DH is doing the 10K and the kids are doing the kids races on the friday!.

I'm hoping to get a meet-up together as we get closer to the date, too. I'd planned on going by myself, but even though I now have my friend coming with me, I think it'd be great to meet other runners! :thumbsup2

Sounds like your family will have a fantastic weekend!! :)

Laura...just stopping in to see how you're doing with training. Hope all is well on your end! :wave2:

Hey!! :wave2: I'm doing well, but have to admit I had a tough run tonight. My body has been pretty achy the last day or two for some reason, and I've been whipped, but I think that has more to do with work stress than the training. And today, I know my meal choices didn't help me any. It gets tough sometimes since I'm kind of at the mercy of my reps about what we'll be eating for lunch that day. Yesterday, I rode with a rep out in the middle of nowhere, and his only catering option was KFC - just had fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy and mac & cheese! I had a chicken breast with the skin removed, but still... not the nutrient-rich whole food based meal I've been trying to focus on. :( The rep I was with today did a little better with a salad and fresh fruit for dessert, but the bulk of the meal was stuff like fried perch and chicken, battered shrimp and spaghetti. :worried: When I'm in my own car and can pack stuff in a cooler, I do great. But eating healthy while traveling with my reps? Gets a little more challenging sometimes, and it definitely affects my workouts. Got my Galloway conditioning training in tonight (Week 3 - 10 min warmup, then 21 minutes 10 second run / 50 second walk, then 10 min cooldown), and felt good that I'd done it, but still tough.

Hoping tomorrow is a little easier! :goodvibes

I'm so glad to hear your training is going well! We're on Week 3 of C25K where we are doing intervals of 3-minute and 90-second jogs with walking in between. It's been a brutal week but we're coming along and it feels great. Jen hurt her knee some time last week and that's been bummin' us out a bit. We're not quite sure what happened but she's staying determined and bouncing back well.

Despite many circumstances, be it aches and pains, food options, and sheer exhaustion (that would be me, haha), I am proud of us all (everyone on this board) for putting our best foot forward in all situations. :)

Count me in for planning a meet-up closer to if everyone is interested. :thumbsup2

I hope Jen's knee is feeling better. Honestly, my knees really started hurting in week 3 of C25k when I tried it last year, and that's why I opted for the Galloway program this time around. It's slow, almost frustratingly slow sometimes, but I know I'm upping my chances of running without injury as I progress. I actually won't be running for 30 seconds straight for another two months or so! :) If Jen's knee continues to bother her, maybe have her check it out. Might be worth a peek...?

And yes - totally up for a meet-up. It'd be so much fun!! ;)

Another Irishian flying over from here too! :) Down South though!

I"m running solo also - will hopefully have my parents cheering me on but alone other than that :wave2:

I'm really going back and forth on whether I should register for the PHM. It's not because I don't think I can do it - although I've not been as active lately, I know that with enough lead time and discipline, I can definitely do it. It's more about the logistics and probably not having my family with me.

We'll be flying down at the end of October for a wonderful week at BC CL. Considering that PHM is only four months later, and that it took some convincing to get DH down for the October trip, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't be up for another Disney vaca so soon. I love the idea of running Disney, but I don't know yet how I feel about going without the family. It'd be so... weird! But I'm really wanting to do this.

Does anyone else go by themselves?

Hi Laura,

I'm going solo this time. Well there are a few coworkers going but we are not sharing a room and they are experienced runners so I probably won't see them too much for the Half. Like the others I'm not too worried, I always feel safe, but I always watch and still cautious at times. Most places I go to even DTD I feel fine to walk around in the evenings. :)

Wonderful! My mon's from Belfast. We should have a gathering at Raglan Road Irish pub in DTD. :) Going to my first PHM. Missed the Donald Half 2014.
I'll be back at that in 2015. :yay:
