Does anyone know why cruises charge for soda?

extra as they do charging $5 per coke!!

markmyboy....just to clarify...DCL does not charge $5.00 per coke...it is $5.00 per day for the refillable soda program. I did not want people to think DCL charged that much per soda!!!!

What I found REALLY interesting is that Disney gets the soda for free - from the Coca Cola Company. We met someone on board the Wonder in Feb, who works for Disney, and he told us that Disney gets all their soda free - for the parks, the cruises & the resorts!!!

I believe whoever told you this was mistaken. Disney gets an extemely reduced price for the soda compared to other companies, but they certainly don't get it for free.

DISNEY (and other ships) DON'T CHARGE FOR DRINKS JUST BECAUSE THEY CAN!!!!!!!!

Now that we have that rumor erased, I can tell you why they charge for pop drinks.... royalties. The cruise ships have to pay hefty royalties to the pop companies.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I was talking to one of the Disney managers on our last cruise and mentioned that I found it strange they charge for pop and not for juice which costs so much more. And She told me that they have to pay royalties to the pop companies because they're not on land (or something like that... I can't quite remember anymore).

I was also talking to a friend that works at the theatre and she said same thing. They pay more for the pop from the companies because the companies know they can charge higher.... it's a vicious circle of supply and demand, but if you want to be upset at somebody, be upset at the big companies.

Just so you don't think Disney is trying to cheap out on you, and to reinstate that Disney pixie dust

Sorry, royalties isn't the right word... liscensing fees.

I don't understand exactly how it works (I have always avoided business courses in school...)

Simply because they can.
thanks for the quote Lisa
Is sort of correct. It's an item onboard that allows DCL to make additional revenue. It's considered an industry standard because it's a proven revenue-making practice, so why wouldn't other companies adopt it. And charging for pop (soda, for those of you that call it that) isn't any different than charging for Palo, or for pictures or for specialty drinks. DCL, just like all other lines, knows how much they are making from each service that charges additional fees and as long as those services continue to create revenue, the services will continue to be offered.

And instead of charging more per passenger to offset making pop free, let's charge people that are carrying on pop extra for carrying it on. ::yes:: Just a thought.

Hogwash!! They do it because they can! Why does Disney charge more for everything they get involved with? Have you ever gotten a price from Disney for a car rental or airfare? You can save alot of money just by booking yourself. Did you ever book a shore excursion through Disney? You can book the same excursion at the same place for less by booking directly. If licensing fee is so high because they are not on land then why does Disney charge so much ON land, been to any Disney Parks lately? Lets face it, Disney charges whatever Marketing Division says is the optimal price that they can get. They are a for profit business and deserve to get what they can. It's because of Discussion boards like this that some people are "enlightened". We find and share ways for many of us to save more money on our vacations then Disney would probably like. ...Mark

"Free" from CocaCola company must be the explaination for why Disney switched to that abomitable excuse for coffee - Nescafe. yuck. YUCK. YUCK!

Disney does it cuz everyone else does ( the money part is correct also). theres peer presure in this they know they can get your money cuz the other boats do, there ace is that they dont charge for it at dinner, thats a selling point, makes them look better in the press......if they gave it all away....they wouldnt have anything to hold back when one of the other boats changes how they do stuff..
for us its money for them its a bargaining chip...
