Does anyone know how to get a Samsung TV to work w/DVD?

We just bought a Samsung 20 inch TV because the old TV in our den did not have enough jacks. Basically, we wanted to use it with a DVD player. The reviews we read gave this set very high ratings, but said the instruction manual is useless. So true!

The TV works fine with our VCR and PlayStation, but no matter what we do, we cannot get any sound when using the DVD. We have two DVD players, both work perfectly with our other TV. We have tried to hook up the DVD player in all the jacks, tried every menu command we can think of, nothing. Perfect picture, no sound.

Are there any TV experts who can prevent me from hurling this piece of you know what into the snow tonight?

when i use my dvd i actually have to change the tv to video3 using the input button (new sony flat screen). check to see if your remote has a similiar button

Ours has a similar thing, but we get picture, just no audio.

Thanks anyway. Samsung's website is useless too. I guess we will have to take it back.

I hooked up a Zenith DVD player to a Samsung TV 2 weeks ago and I had no idea how to go about it but it turned out to be so easy. Is the white and red connectors of the cable hooked into the back of the TV in the white and red ports marked input 1 or input 2 audio? The back of my TV has, from left to right, a yellow, white, and red port.
Then the back of the DVD player has these same corresponding colors.

Yes, how do you have it hooked up? Most basic DVD players have 3 outputs yellow, red and white. The yellow is the video (which it sounds like you have hooked up). But as another poster noted, you also need to have the red and white.

Why does your playstation/etc work fine? Are you hooking it up via coax cable?? (looks like image below)

If so, that kind of connection does both sound and video in just one cable.

I have an older Sony TV and a DVD player. Since the sound is wired through our stereo and we use the VCR to control the station we're watching (I told you it was an old tv, the speakers need to be repaired ) we have to switch to LINE! using the remote's INPUT button (or by channelling up/down the the end of the list).

Thanks, but our hookups are all correct. We have tested all of our ports and cables with the other TV (JVC), no problem. We have tried two different DVD players with this TV (both work perfectly with the JVC), and the result is the same. Perfect picture, no sound. Yet, the Playstation and VCR work perfectly.

The only thing we can figure is there must be some kind of sound setting you have to adjust in the Samsung TV, but the manual gives no clue.

If we didn't already have 8 inces of snow I would be packing it up and taking it back to Circuit City today.

My advice--stick with Sony, Panasonic or JVC.

Are you using the same RCA cables (colored) when you are testing the other equipment? Is it possible that the sound wire you are using could be bad? Try using another set of RCA cables.

How many devices can you hook up to the back of the TV? My Samsung TV (2yrs old) has 3 sets of the yellow, white, and red ports. But only 2 of them are inputs (1 & 2) the 3rd set of three says "monitor out". Do you have it plugged into one of the inputs? I'm just guessing here.
As I said above, my Samsung TV is 2 yrs. old and I love it. Never had a problem. I have a VCR and a DVD player hooked up but no gaming system.

Hey everyone, thanks so much for trying to help.

DH FINALLY got a human being on the phone from Samsung and the guy concluded it is the TV that is not working right. Now we have to pack the thing up and haul it back to Circuit City. Oh the joy of returns.

I am getting so sick and tired of spending good money for electronics that do not work. We have had nothing but trouble this year with our wireless router, a DVD player, battery back-up for computer and now this. It is not as if we are buying the cheap stuff, either.

Once burned and we're done. We will NEVER buy anything from Samsung again. Should have gone with the Sony.
