I read a good tip on here to read the reviews of the resorts you know you love and then see if the reviews are the same for the one you are trying. Make sense?
I know we loved the poly and it gets amazing reviews. I want to try the cr and the reviews are mostly not that good...loud, no theme, no disney feel and not worth the money. This has me a little concerned?

Does anyone go by the reviews off the disboards to help their decision?

Everyone has different families (size, ages, taste, etc). So even though I do take all the different reviews into consideration, I keep in mind that everyone's opinion is different according to their needs. For example, I've read mostly bad reviews for Tony's in MK. But I always wanted to eat there, so I made reservations. And we all enjoyed our meals & will go back again. So, I guess, I'd say read them, but take it all with a grain of salt. ;)

I am a frequent contributor to Trip Advisor. I like to use it and feel like I should help share info. That said, some people don't ever seem to be happy. I try to give the good and bad but I still tey to be positive unless I am murdered in the hotel parking lot..LOL

I look at reviews on sites like TripAdvisor and Yelp, but take them with a grain of salt. I try to sort out the stuff in the review that's a legit concern from what's just personal preference. So stuff like "no theme," "no Disney feel," "not worth the money" is largely personal preference. "Loud," though, strikes me as a more legit concern, and one I'd dig deeper on. (In this case, I know from past digging that Chef Mickey's is loud, so request a room on a higher floor/away from it to escape the noise.)

And sometimes a bad review is for one very specific aspect, not the entirety of the experience. You know, it's like I'll read a restaurant review that says something like, "beautiful atmosphere, incredible food, amazing service, but they wouldn't take my coupon so ONE STAR," well, okay, I just won't try to use a coupon and I'll probably have a five-star experience then. ;)

We use Tripadvisor regularly. We look at the reviews and pictures. We base our decisions on couples our age and if the majority like it then we feel that we will be happy.

I use TripAdvisor frequently but I look at the number of posts the negative reviewer has contributed. I discount all of the ones who have just a few posts as they are probably not seasoned travelers.

I agree with the pp's to take reviews with a grain of salt. I don't use trip advisor, but I read a lot of negative reviews about the Poly here on the Dis prior to our stay. After reading the negativity, I seriously considered changing resorts due to those reviews. After giving it a lot of thought, I decided that everyone's opinion and expectation is different and the only way to know whether the Poly was for us, was to experience it for ourselves. With the said, I couldn't have been happier at the Poly and if I would have changed resorts, we would have missed out on one of the best Disney vacations we've ever had! So what I'm saying is will you love the CR? Maybe, maybe not....but I wouldn't let some bad reviews steer you away from trying a resort that appeals to you, whether it be for theme, convenience, or another reason.

I normally don't consult Trip Advisor for Disney resorts, but it is valuable source of information for road trips. When we drive to Disney, I would never book a room anywhere along I 95 without first reading reviews on TA. The majority of the reviews are from people like me who are looking for a clean, safe place to stay, and they are usually spot on. You can really tell which posts are legit, or not.

While I am a review contributor on Trip Advisor, I do not rely on the reviews posted there over DisBoards ... Each of them seem to serve a slightly different audience/clientele. I look to DisBoards to give me info from huge "Disney Fans" like myself...the intricate nuances...What is currently served at BWI Club Level for breakfast, what is the to die for offering at the newly renovated Boardwalk Bakery, etc... When I write or read a review on TA, I do it knowing that a majority of TA's target audience and writers may be newbie/novice WDW visitors. When it is time to get the straight scoop upon which to make a vacation decision, I come to DisBoards hands down! My peeps post here :)

TripAdvisor has definitely kept me out of trouble at DLR, where the potential to stay in a nearby sketchy hotel is a lot higher. (Oh the agony and ecstasy of Harbor Blvd.) That said, I would take a closer look at the CR reviews on TripAdvisor. More than 70% of them are "Excellent" or "Very Good". And a lot of the bad reviews are disgruntled corporate types sent there for the convention facilities who hate the fact that they're *forced* to be at Walt Disney World (I know, does not compute). Or the usual TripAdvisor whiners who think that they're supposed to be the center of attention everywhere they go.

For example, among the average-to-poor reviews...

  • One person had Disney replace their mattress and move their refrigerator to another location in the room for the duration of their stay;
  • Another gave the CR low marks because they had to pull out their own couch, and then called the front desk to complain that the Electrical Water Pageant was too loud while it was going by "in the middle of the night" at 10 p.m.;
  • And my personal favorite, a woman complained about being forced to wait *12 minutes* for desk staff to get her luggage out of her room after she decided she had someplace more important to be at checkout time and was surprised when her KTTW card had automatically stopped working by the time she decided to come back.

(Slightly OT, the easiest way to be the center of attention everywhere you go is to just be nice to everyone--so many of the reviews like these two make it really obvious how obnoxiously these guests are treating the CMs and mousekeeping.)

I think you have nothing to worry about!

My DH contributes to and reads reviews on Trip Advisor, both for hotels and restaurants. He swears by it.

I am a frequent reviewer and frequent reader of tripadvisor. But like any other review forum, I focus on what the majority say rather than the one that gives 5 stars for everything or the one that says a hotel is the worst they have ever stayed in.

I use trip advisor a LOT and am a frequent contributor.

I tend to look for the best bad reviews--people who had legitimate complaints and who articulate situations well. Glowing reviews do me little good, but people who have solid complaints about things like bed bugs, plumbing problems, etc. get my full attention.

For example: for my upcoming trip, I checked out a popular, well placed, alternative to "official" Disney hotels. I started to notice a pattern of security concerns--things missing, access to rooms without Id, bags looking disheveled upon opening. It was subtle, but present. Likely isn't an issue or is related to one person, but we opted for a regular on property hotel instead. Thanks Trip Advisor!

I used to rely fairly heavily on Trip Advisor reviews until our last Christmas (non-Disney) vacation. We booked a resort based on overwhelmingly glowing reviews, and the resort ended up being a dirty nightmare.

I've never, and would never, use TA reviews to book a Disney stay, though. There are enough RELIABLE reviews right here! :thumbsup2
