Wow. Some of the hatred for a fictional character expressed in this thread is....interesting.
We are a Duffy house. My DS3 has slept with him every night for years. And we have read the book long before we ever purchased him. He is the favourite bear.
It's one thing to not "get it", if you haven't taken the time to look into the backstory and history but it's another, in my opinion, to begrudge someone else of the enjoyment they might get from such a character.
I know others have called him "creepy," but think that Duffy is actually one of the most approachable characters for very small children. Some of the others can be scary, even if we adults don't see it that way. So I am pleased that Disney is offering something that the preschool crowd (among others) can really enjoy.
He just seems kind of generic, or non disney-esque to me.
I do believe that that is the point. His Disney detailing is subtle. He is supposed to be a generic teddy bear. It's all right there in the story which came out a loooong time ago.
I don't like him. Disney was trying to make him the next big thing, but that didn't happen.
I'm not quite sure you can make that statement. I've seen others say that too but what is it based on? Is there proof somewhere that he isn't selling like they hoped he would?
I loved it when EPCOT first introduced Figment & he wasn't attached to any disney movie or character and I love Figment too! I kinda think of Duffy as something similar to that.
Exactly. There are lots of characters that the average guest doesn't know the backstory of. For instance, people complaining that they present Tink as a diva. Well, have these people not seen Peter Pan? She is! Then there are the characters like Figment who have no movie to back them up. What about the Orange Bird that just came back to Adventureland?
All those who think that Duffy was created solely to make money, hate to break it to you, but all of Disney was created to make money..
That's right. Disney doesn't create movies to warm the cockles of your heart. They make movies so that they can sell merchandise. This is a slightly different approach but the end result is the same. Who cares?
If you're not interested in him it's hard to escape him.
Again, so what? The same could be said for the Princesses, the Fab 5, Pirates, etc. Just walk on by if it's not your cup of tea.
He isn't a character. He's a bear with cute outfits. And he sucks.
Actually, he is. You can meet and greet him. I think that counts as a character. And he's certainly more life-like than characters like Lightening MacQueen and Buzz and Woody. Not to mention that he has been around (in non-character form) for a lot longer than many of the other characters that you'll meet in the parks.
This type of thread is fairly unbalanced. It always attracks the negative view because people like to rant, vent and complain.
