Does anyone else have a boxer?

I have the sweetest, most adorable, adoring boxer. But she's a couple chicken nuggets short of a happy meal. I was wondering if this was a boxer trait or if my dog is just special. The only other experience I have is my deceased rottie and my rottie mix. They were/are both very intelligent animals. I love her no matter how slow she is. I eventually want another boxer and just want to know what to expect.

They're happy dogs and tend to express their happiness pretty easily, but I wouldn't assume that silly = stupid. There are always stupid individuals, but as a working breed they're pretty smart. Like Rotties, they were bred to sometimes work alone and think for themselves, rather than just mindlessly follow human direction, so that can be misinterpreted as "hard to teach" when in fact, the dog learns perfectly easily enough -- he just isn't motivated to prove it over and over again.

We had one of those once. She was a stray, walked up to my house, and was so skinny, I didn't think she would last a day. We tried to find her home (she was a purebred boxer with her ears and tail fixed, so I know she belonged to SOMEONE), but no one claimed her, so we kept her at my father-in-law's house, fattened her up, and she lived another 7 years. She was the sweetest, most grateful dog, but she was not very smart either.

She sounds SO sweet! I see a Boxer in my future. Friends of our have a male and he is so loving.

I have a boxer mix and she's the sweetest dog ever. Still wants to crawl into my lap and cuddle even though she's well over 70lbs now. I have never noticed if she's a few nuggets short because she's very trainable and eager to please, though I have noticed a few nuggets missing from my dinner plate every now and then.

We have a purebred boxer puppy and there are days I'd think he wasn't very smart because he is a handful. However, upon further inspection, he's extremely smart. He needs a firm hand because he likes to challenge training and test the boundaries. He can be hyper and nutty and overly zealous in his greetings and lots of people see him bouncing around and us having to be so firm with him and assume he's a dumb dog. However, that dog can learn a trick in five minutes if he's so inclined, he remembers everything, housebreaking him was a cinch, and he shows us constantly that he is extremely intelligent.

My friend has a boxer. This dog is smart and was trained to follow commands. The only problem they have is the dog is not very friendly around other dogs. She has been known to viciously attack many dogs without warning...including dogs she has lived with. I don't know if this is a result of jealousy or just a mean streak.

We had a boxer for nine years. He was the best dog ever! He was one hyper dog, but we loved him to pieces. Loved his kidney bean dance and boxer wiggles! Hated his stinky farts though.

I adopted a boxer in June. He isn't the brightest about some things but does well at others. If you hold food up and drop it to him, he can not catch it. Sometimes it hits him in the nose and sometimes he flinches. (I think he doesn't have the best eyesight) but he was able to break into a closet that we had put a broom handle through the pull handles to get to his kibble. I haven't had a dog in 30 years and never considered a boxer but I would get another one in a heartbeat.

We had boxers since I was little, My husband and I owned 2. Our male boxer died last yr. and my female cried everyday so we had to get her a playmate.
Boxers are the best animals to own, they are so gentle with kids and my cats.

We have owned boxers since I was a kid and now, as an adult, they are the only dogs we have choosen for our home. Yes, we have had a few other breeds that somehow have wondered up and made this their home...kinda like the black lab mix currently living here that belongs to my dd. She moved out with her dh about 4 years ago and was going to come get her when she had a place that took dogs!

Anyhoo..love a boxer to pieces. They are just like people. Ours always have slept with the kids. Very protective of the kids. Our boxer boy Bruiser, when he was with us would let us know if there was a stranger out in the front. He would position himself in front of the gate, bark like mad and basically watch the kids and the make sure they stayed away from the gate. He loved his brothers and sisters. I can't think of a single thing about them I don't love! The kidney bean dance is the best!

And yes, I agree...sometimes they are a few short of a happy meal..but I really think it has to do with the fact they like it that way. You think that so they have you right where they need you! They are way smarter than humans!
