Okay, so you go on a one week Disney Vacation and you buy a seven day MYW pass. The resort gives you your room key which are also, magically, your park passes. How great! Very sturdy!

Now, buy and AP. That handy, dandy pass that lets you visit WDW for a marvelous 365 days per year. Yep, you guessed it......PAPER!!!!

"Please keep that plastic 7 day pass as safe as possible. What, you want to use this pass for a whole year? Please, take this paper one and guard it with your life!"

What was the thinking behind this? :rotfl2:

The "'paper" APs are very durable. We have had APs since 98 or 99 and have never had an issue with them ripping. In fact when we tried ripping one of our old ones and we could not. You would have to do alot to ruin an AP.

It's not just paper. It's plasticized, and remarkably rugged.

We just got our APs last week. Immediately after entering the park, they didn't work in the fast pass machines and had to be replaced. A couple of days later my husbands didn't work upon entering the park and it had to be replaced again. We also had trouble with them being read upon entering the parks. They would have to be put into the machines several times and sometimes into different machines. I sort of thought, hmmmm, if these were plastic maybe they would work better. Who knows!

If they didn't work in the fastpass machines, it could have been that the biometric scan didn't work, and the CM at the turnstile let the pass through without 'activating' that it went through.

Paper, plastic, whatever, just so long as it gets me into the parks ::MickeyMo !!!
Honestly, we've had APs for easily over a decade and have never had any problems with them being paper. It's not a big deal as far as I'm concerned.

our Disneyland AP's are plastic, like a credit card. I would think they would all be the same. I know the type of plactisized paper you are talking about....it is very durable! :teeth:

I hate the paper AP's. My first paper AP constantly quit working once it got a slight bend in it, which prevented the bar code from being read by the machine. I could not "bend" it back straight no matter what I did. Finally had to get it replaced. Another AP got damp in a rainstorm and it started acting up. :(

I was told by a CM that APs can never be plastic, as they are cut from these big rolls, which don't take up much space. The plastic cards would take up too much room being stored inside the ticket booths. :confused3

I would rather have a durable plastic credit card-like annual pass. My voucher for MNSSHP was more durable than the paper APs!

I've had AP's since 1998 and used each one 20 to 25 days and never had one wear out.

If you buy a MYW at a ticket booth, do you get paper or plastic?

The AP's are not paper. They are made of Tyvek. Made from very fine, high-density polyethylene fibers, Tyvek brand protective material offers all the best characteristics of paper, film and fabric in one material. This unique balance of properties, which cannot be found in any other material, makes Tyvek lightweight yet strong; vapor-permeable, yet water, chemical, puncture, tear and abrasion-resistant. Tyvek is also low-linting, smooth and opaque.

Tyvek... that's the name of it!

I'm sure the fact that it is much much less brittle than plastic is a major advantage.

I prefer the paper/tyvek APs. I am the designated carrier and holder at all times for my entire family's APs. The paper/tyvek ones all fit nicely in a pocket in one AP benefit sleeve with no noticable "bulge" (I'm just not a purse or backpack kind of gal). That would not be the case if I had three or more "credit card" thickness heavy plastic ones on me. Long live the paper AP!
I think most of the problems that are mentioned upthread are related to the magnetic strip and which is of course, on both types of tickets, so the strip de-magnetizing could happen with either one. I have never had a problem with any of ours, and they have been very wet many times, and "sat" on in my pocket day after day after day on our trips......

Our APs worked fine for all 10 days this past december. We will be returning this November and hope they still work fine! :worship: *knocks on wood* :wizard: would be a Poopy way to start a vacation by having to dink w/our tickets ya know!

I used my AP 86 times last year with no problems. It looked almost like new at the end of the year. I keep it in my wallet all the time and take it out and put it back immediately.

I never liked the "look" of the tyvek tickets ( plastic looks so much cooler ), but they do seem to work pretty well. They will become de-magnetized if you let them come in contact with other magnetic stripe cards in your wallet ( as will the plastic ones ) so keep them separated.

I was disappointed to see that they were paper too. I also thought you had to keep them in those folders that they came in to protect them and that was such a pain - taking each one out of the folder every time you wanted a FP. From you more experienced AP holders - is this not necessary?? It sounds like you just keep them in your wallets like the rest of your credit cards???

I keep all of ours in one of the folders--not each one in it's own folder. It keeps them from coming in contact with anything except themselves. :) I can fit 6 APs in one folder--maybe more. I keep the one folder with all the APs in my back pants pocket. Works fine.
