I'm thinking of signing up to be a consultant....the starting kit is only $64 and the woman who would be my "team leader" is willing to put that money up ahead of time until I make some sales as well as sharing her inventory with me until I make some sales.

I dont know...I heard they are "like a cult"- LOL

Unless you are prepared to be an aggressive salesperson and annoy people by phone and door-to-door, I wouldnt bother.

If you don't follow goofy girl's advice, invest in the smallest amount possible.
Yes, I do know some about Mary Kay. I should have followed googygirl's advice.

LOL GG, gotta agree there. At least in the case of the woman who somehow suckered me out of my phone number. This woman called me every week for 3 years and drove me insane. I really actually liked their face masque, but I couldn't deal with her so I stopped using it.

Of course, I don't know if it was just her, or that the product was a hard sell and required these women to be pushy or what. I just know she talked herself OUT of a sale as far as I was concerned by constantly harrassing me.

See, the recruiter that I was talking to knew I wasn't comfortable with high pressure sales but she said that in the specific area of town I live in it would be pretty easy to sell (with all of the college students here) and to just talk to people in my classes about it.

It is their job to make it sound easy.

There are lots of Mary Kay consultants in my area, as well as where I work! For every 10 employees, 3 sell Mary Kay! One is very successful and got her car--a Grand Am.

Good luck if this is something you are interested in.

Proceed with caution. My friend's daughter bought $3,000 worth of products to "get started".

I could never do it! I for one don't like the cosmetics, they are entirely too overpriced and They are horrible on my skin, they make me break out!
I was talking to one one day and she wouldn't take no for an answer! She hounded me to no end! I don't like the stuff and even told her that straight out, but she wouldn't take no for an answer!

I sold MK for a while. I lost money on it, of course, even though my "team leader" bought some of it back when I deactivated. And if you ever choose to quit, you can NEVER go back. My best friend called it "The Pink Shunning"! LOL

When I went to college I couldn't afford makeup that expensive and I choose not to wear it to class most of the time. Perhaps where you go to school there are more girls who wear it.
My sister's friend's mom (whew!) has been in MK forever. She's a regional type person and gets a percentage of the sales that each of the saleswomen under her make. Does that make sense? Anyway, I think that's how they get the cars- on the work somebody else did.,

I think that here in the South (just as a general thing), women do tend to wear makeup more. I figure it's not much $ and there's really not any risk since she'll pay for it up front and I just have to pay her back so I think I'm going to try to do it.

have you looked into seling avon instead?

No I haven't, Caitycaity...do you know something about them?

actually, i don't know that much about them, but in my experience i have found that the avon sales ladies are a little less "pushy" than the MK ladies, so maybe it is easier to make some money on them.

i did avon for a while...it was ok, but i wasn't an agressive salesperson so i didn't make much from it...

i LOVE MK products, but i don't have a rep in my area any more (i moved) and i couldn't afford to replenish the things i needed for a bit there. i did buy into the consultant thing last year, but only to be able to use the discount. well, the thing with the discount is that you can get 50% off, BUT your order has to be at least $400 in product every time you want the discount...i just couldn't do it...

i love what MK did for my skin, but i'm now trying out clinique. that's something i can go to a department store and get. i don't have to tranck down a rep for it. i just started using the clinique 3 step skin program and it seems to be doing it's job...i have very dry skin and it's not as dry anymore.

i tried to "get by" with the brands you could get at target, but i had horrible reactions to them. i used to wear cover girl all the time, and this time, my eyes swelled up and my eyelids got really super dry somehow and flaked...it was nasty...and the moisturizers that i tried did nothing but leave a heavy greasy feeling on my skin...i like to wear makeup but don't like to feel like i'm wearing makeup...did that make sense? lol

MK is like a cult...they suck you in and it's just weird...i wouldn't become a consultant unless i knew for a fact that i could have a good clientelle...but that's just my opinion...

good luck in whatever you decide!!!

My SIL lost a lot of money on "inventory" too.

A lot of college students can't afford make up that expensive. Plus, they may find it annoying having someone coming into class selling something.

I've had good and bad experiences with Avon ladies.

Some were pretty easy going, but one I knew was so aggressive that I stopped buying from her. She was so bad that the place she used to sell to had asked her to leave the premises and never come back!

Also- the story of Mary Kay was on tv not long ago- did anyone see it?

I think Clinique is a much better product, and have been using it since the early 1980's!

Whenever one of the Mary Kay girls at work approach me, I tell them "don't even bother!"
