Does a WDW AP renewal activate automatically after payment?

Or can you wait to activate them in the same manner as when you purchased it for full price?

We will have a 7 month lull between renewal and usage but we save about $250 for renewal vs new purchase. But of course we dont want to flush 7 months down the toilet so I'd only renew if we could wait to activate the renewal APs.

Renewal picks up right where the previous pass ends. There is no way to delay the activation. If you will not go to any parks for 7 months, you are better off waiting to activate a new pass.
