OK I just want to get this straight.

When you book a package with tickets and a room (we will leave DDP out of it) is the price the same as if you just got a room and, for the sake of augment bought, your tickets at the gate.

My DBIL is planning a first trip for the days before Thanksgiving (I know crowds) he went on the WDW site and started pricing "packages".

I'm pretty sure that there is no special package price for the room or the tickets or even the DDP, but is there any other benefit?

For now there are no discounts for that time period.

Also can a TA get him any other deals that are not offered to the general public?

Thanks, I'm kind of taking personal responsibility to make the trip is as good as it can be.

A package should roughly be the same price as the pieces individually, however you do get a few extras with the package: luggage tags (not the ME ones), 1 round of mini golf for 1 person, 30 mins playtime (or something like that) at the resort arcade, stuff like that. If that has value, then it's something, if not, then it's not :).

I don't believe TAs can get any discounts that we can't get ourselves. However, there's something to be said for someone being able to organize everything, especially for a first trip. They also have a tendency (well, the good ones) to keep on top of released discounts that apply to your plans and can often alert you to them quickly, increasing your chances of being able to take advantage of them (instead of just happening across them weeks after release only to find out they're sold out under that deal).

If you're not getting the DDP, then I'd book room only and buy your tickets from Undercover Tourist. You'll save a few $ then buying them at the gate.
And if you sign up for the Mousesavers.com newsletter, you'll save a little more. If you look on their prices listed- it's the total price incl tax. No shipping costs. I've used them twice, and they're very reliable. Some ticket sellers add shipping cost at the check out. UT ships for free. Real tickets, not vouchers.

A TA can't get you any cheaper deals, but they do know when Disney puts out their discounts, and will be on the phone to get you the best price. If you book yourself, you have to keep watching to see when the discounts come out. So depends on how much time you want to spend.
