does a child's passport expire when they turn 18?

So in other words they rip you off by at least 6 months when you renew a passport. They say 10 years, but you really can't wait till it is expired to renew without doing an all new one at that point. So it really isn't 10 years it's more like 9 1/2. Plus you are without your actuall passport until you get it back from them.:confused3 Why can't they be like Disney APs& do the renewals from the expiration date of the old Passport?:rotfl2:Disney need to teach them a few lessons.

"They" rip us all off in many more significant ways than this.

No need to feel 'ripped off' since not all countries have the 6 month requirement when visiting/traveling. You need to check the country you are visiting to see what their requirements are.
I've cruised with 2 weeks left on my passport so I wasn't 'ripped off' on mine, I renewed it when I got home.

I believe you can renew a passport after it's expired but not too long after it's expired. You can always renew it a month before it expires (unless you're going to be mid-trip within that 6-month prior to expiration window).

ETA: it looks like a passport can be expired up to 5 years and still be able to be renewed:

"You can renew your passport by mail if you meet the following requirements:

Your current passport is not damaged (other than normal wear and tear);
The issuance date is not more than 15 years ago;
You were age 16 or older when it was issued;
You still have the same name, or can legally document your name change.

If you do not meet all these requirements, you must apply in person for your US passport renewal. If you do meet the criteria, you can apply for a passport renewal by mail."

Thanks, Mary. I feel better now. I shouldn't have to renew until after our 2012 cruise.:thumbsup2

Oh this is too funny! By your ticker, it looks like you'll be getting on the Fantasy as we're debarking. I'll be on the 8/18/12 Western.

And I'm brushing up on my passport info, too. My last passport was issued back in 1985. I think it's too late to renew it. :lmao:

Yes, it does look that way. We will be on the August 25, 2012 Eastern Carribean cruise. The 26th is our 40th Wedding Anniversary.

Yes, it does look like you will need to start all over again. We got ours in 2002 to go to London for DHs work, but didn't get to go till 2005 because of the War in Iraq. The company suspended all overseas travel for a few years. The year after we were there is when the subway and bus bombings happened in London.:scared1:
