I got my nose about broken and my car keyed the last time I stuck up someone with a reaction like that.

The people who you represent and care about know how you feel. That's all that matters...you're not going to change his mind about it OP...So just laugh and think of the great people he'll miss out on knowing.

I don't think many of us can look back without some sort of experience the same as you have had or that the OP had. None of us are immune to reacting emotionally.

I try to remind myself that ignorance exists...and sometimes we can't fix it. Sad, but true.

I'm not sorry for anything I said that night...but I was OBNOXIOUS when I said it and I embarrassed the perrson I was standing up for.

OP- There are other ways to display your tolerence.
My DH's best friend is a gay man in the military...in his unit. There are MANY people who are hatefull toward him...but you know how my husband shows his support around them? Instead of getting defensive of his friend, he'll just brag, a little louder then he needs to, about how his friend came over played cards/ate dinner or how they went out to the bar and did this and that.... My husband is an older guy and a lot of the younger guys look up to him and want to spend time with him(he has the cool video games and the motorcycle and works on import cars)...so some of them are learning that if they want to hang with my DH, they will have to hang with his GAY best friend too....That's just how we roll.

He has a lot of other little subtle ways like this too...

I'm not saying he hasn't ever gotten physical when he was defending his friend...he has...but this is a a pretty testosterone filled place and sometimes it needs to be done.

Good news is, In my mediation meeting, I told them what happened and gave them a choice. If they filed the dispute, I would press for the guy I got physical with who made those comments about gays. I would file hostile work environment and involve the media. Since this place is very diverse oriented, they agreed to go back to him and give him "his options".

The State Representatives like me as well, and that benefits the employers.

What makes you think that the other guy wouldn't go to the media and tell them that he was physically assaulted by you and his employer did nothing to protect him because you threatened them to make it go away or YOU would go to the media. What he did was wrong but what you did was a criminal offense! I don't think many State Representatives are going to "like" you very much when this gets out!

If the story is true that the OP presents, his title "just dodged a bullet" is way off the mark. Nothing may have happened immediately to the OP for this assault, but you know that his name has a major black mark by it. He may not get termed, but you can be sure that he won't be anyone's first choice for a plum assignment. He's also lost the good will of the powers that be by threatening to alert the media! Really??? Like THAT'S a good, reasonable idea.. And if he truly believes that he is not replaceable, he is deluded as well as having impulse control issues. Not exactly what anyone wants in an employee.

Alert the Media???? Really, puhlease.......... you need a little more than that to get their attention. However, what you claim to have done is assault and I for one hope they hand you your butt and your walking papers on a platter.

Hostile work environment? Really? Perhaps you should look up what constitutes a true prosecutable hostile work environment. Physical harm is most likely going to top someone using a few words you don't happen to like. Maybe you can do the research while you are sitting at home searching the want ads.

Uncle Remus is representing a "character". She's been consistent in her dialect and, I must say, does it VERY well.

BTW, I'm black and I have a degree in speech and English Lit. I find it entertaining and intriguing at how consistent she is. It's FAR from ignorant, it's quite brilliant and the regulars around here have come to notice and expect it.

And then I'll hire my Jewish lawyer friend to save my butt while my Indian doctor friend treats you for your injuries even though you can't understand a work he's saying.
