Seems like everyone on this thread either everyone they know is getting it or everyone they know is not getting it.
Hmmm, am I the odd ball that knows some people getting it and some not getting it?
What I love about these threads is that posters only read what is they want and not actually see what was said
I never stated that you said you wouldn't but instead I asked if you ever have taken any medication in order to help or prevent an illness from running its course. I guess your answer is that you would take an antibiotic, but you never mentioned any other meds like cough suppressants, decongestants, antihistamines, etc.
IMO, what I asked is a valid response to your post, where you question what ever happened to letting things run their course. If you have ever taken cough medicine for a common cold and you not opposed to taking an antibiotic instead of letting a bacterial infection run its course, or benadryl to control allergies it seems a bit hypocritical to say let a viral influenza infection run its without some kind of relief, like Tamiflu.
Could either one of you point out where I said that I would NEVER go on an antibiotic or NEVER take medication? That is what I love about these threads. Exaggerate it for your own cause.
If I have a BACTERIAL infection, I seek treatment. But I make darn sure it is bacterial before willingly taking antibiotics and I certainly don't take Tamiflu to lesson some symptoms.
It is very unlikely that anyone in my family would be put on Tamiflu because I can not remember a time that any of us have ever been to the doctor within the first 48 hours of getting sick. I read on these threads constantly about kids waking up with a 101 degree temp and the parent already has an appointment 2 hours later. And yes, my kids have had some incredibly high fevers but I don't take them in unless the fever has lasted for days and won't go down or there are other symptoms that seems very out of the ordinary. I just had a friend take her kid to the walk in clinic because he had a 100 degree temp. They screened for strep and it was negative. No blood was drawn and no other tests were performed yet he is now on an antibiotic.
Why?? And honestly, how can you really think this is right?
Thanks. I certainly hope I don't end up that way either.I also hope that my son is safe right now since he is in a car with another mom on the expressway; an expressway that is notorious for lunatics driving too fast and causing accidents. I am not really sure what your point is. Of course I don't want to end up on a vent but the MAJORITY of people getting H1N1 are not ending up that way. Is there a risk? Certainly. But at this point, my son is in more danger on the expressway.
I think it's unusual that you are running into all these anti vaccine Drs. Every woman on my moms side of the family except myself and one other cousin are nurses, plus my grandma and another cousin on my dads side. They are all getting the vaccine when available, as far as I know at least. My mom has been a nurse for 28 years and all the Drs. at the surgery center she works for plan on getting it, and are urging the nurses to as well. My PA, and the Dr. at the urgent care we took my daughter to are also recommending it, and anxious for it to arrive. Most of the moms I know are also planning on getting it for their kids, and from those I've talked to their Dr.s recommend it. The only opposition that I ran into is that the Dr. at the urgent care was not a fan of the mist vaccine and didn't recommend it, after my own research my son and I got it anyways, as I was worried about waiting for the shot to be available.
I am opposed to things that are not a necessity and I guess we will have to agree to disagree on whether Tamiflu and flu vaccines are a real necessity.
If I have a headache or a cough, I will take the appropriate medication if I feel it warrants it. If I have a bacterial infection, I will take an antibiotic. I will not take an antibiotic for a virus. I will not take Tamiflu (something I feel isn't safe) for a flu bug. I will not get a seasonal flu shot when I have only had the flu twice in my lifetime.
I am NOT at all opposed to vaccines, including flu shots. I think they can be a true lifesaver. However, I also think there is a gross overuse of them. I would love to know how we jumped from only the elderly and those with a compromised immune system needing a seasonal flu shot to everyone and their brother needing it now? I will also never understand the need for a chicken pox vaccine for the majority of the population. I do not believe trying to eradicate every illness is a healthy thing. I think we are doing our bodies more harm than good by refusing to at least attempt to fight things off without immediately reaching for the likes of antibiotics and Tamiflu. Of course, I am also not a fan of Purell, either and I think that is being overused by the bucketful. If they came out with a cold vaccine tomorrow, I would run far, far away but I bet I am in the minority.
Is H1N1 more frightening than the regular seasonal flu? It seems to be since there have been deaths without any preexisting conditions. I am truly scared and I mean that in all sincerity. However, it seems as if my DD has already had the virus and my son can not get the vaccine do to a severe egg allergy so we have to play it by ear and hope for the best. I take comfort in knowing that the MAJORITY of people recover just fine from this virus.

Bolding mine.
It's because for some reason H1N1 is producing more and more deadly complications in a different population than seasonal flu. Seasonal flu tends to really affect the elderly and those with underlying issues. H1N1 is causing the same complications in young, healthy people. This is why the "target" population for H1N1 vaccination is so different than that for seasonal flu.

I understand the target for H1N1. What I am questioning is why most doctors recommend that everyone gets the seasonal flu vaccine for years now. It is not in relation to H1N1.
My oldest is 14. When she was born, the seasonal flu shot was still only being recommended for those with compromised immune systems and the elderly. When she went in for her first school physical, it was pushed on us big time. I remember arguing with the doctor about it. It was also the same time that the chicken pox vaccine had come out and I was suddenly termed an anti-vax mother. My kids have had all the necessary vaccines so I am not sure why I was looked at as anti-vax. More people may have gotten a seasonal flu shot this year due to H1N1 but this has been something that has been going on for at least the past 9 years. I do not think I have a single friend that doesn't rush in to get their kid a seasonal flu shot and none of them have compromised immune systems. I think the seasonal flu shot is a great thing but I think it is completely unnecessary for most people.
I have yet to run across anyone whose doc is NOT recommending the shot, except for some people who are posting about it here. I also don't know anyone IRL who isn't planning on getting it when its available.
IRL, I promise I'm not getting it and neither will my husband or daughter.
Well then I guess you are another of those people who post here that I mentionedOr do you think I actually know you IRL

I also know some who got it and some who didn't..I also have my pediatrician who said he absolutely would get it ..and another pediatrician in the same practice who told me I should get it for my son but is on the fence for her own kids.
I did get it for my child. I was satisfied after all the research I have done that more harm would come to my son if he contracted H1N1. He is five and very asthmatic. A Cold can turn into pneumonia for him..I have been in the situation where he became lethargic and had to watch his sides suck in because he couldn't get enough air..after doing everything my ped told me with the nebulizer. It happened hard and it happened fast. I do not want to be that scared again. I feel safe and confidant in my decision based on everything I read(and no it wasn't one source). But that was my decision and everyone can make their own..
I just get tired of all these "youtube" experts all over the place. You tube also has guys who make their own movies by jumping off roofs onto trampolines..You tube just isn't the place to get medical advice. In fact, I could get a you tube video and say whatever I wanted and by the end of the day have 100 people following and believing in me.
People have said they feel bullied since they decided against getting the vaccine.. There have been quite a few people who have asked me if I was nuts to get a new vaccine put into my child.....I told them if god forbid my son ever goes through what he has ..they are welcome to come and see what happens to little ones who get asthma and pneumonia. No, I am not nuts. I am doing what I think is best.
I cannot let a virus run it's course through my son...the course will be straight to his lungs. I need antibiotics(when warranted) and vaccines to help keep him healthy. I welcome them. To each his own..but I am not a mindless parent who is doing what my government tells me too. I am scared just like everyone else is...
